Adrian’s phone vibrated against the desk.
He glanced at it absently. He saw a message from Emilia. His expression softened until he opened the attachment.
The first photograph appeared.
Adrian went completely still.
He swiped through them, and his jaw tightened. There were sixteen photographs of Emilia, and his cars.
Someone had been watching her. Someone had been watching them.
Adrian’s fingers tightened around the phone.
He immediately pressed call.
The phone rang once.
Emilia answered in the second ring. "Hello?" Her voice was quiet.
Adrian closed his eyes briefly. "Emilia."
She paused briefly, and cleared her throat. "Hi."
He leaned back in his chair. "Where are you?"
"At my dorm."
"Are you alone?"
"No. Kylie is here."
Adrian’s jaw loosened slightly. "Alright."
He looked at the photographs again. "Why didn’t you tell me?"
Emilia swallowed. "I didn’t know how."
"You could have called me." His voice softened. "I’m not angry you didn’t." He clarified.
She was quiet.
Adrian looked at the photograph on his screen again. "How long have you had these?"
"Since the gala night." Emilia rubbed a hand over her face. Her voice trembled lightly. "I can’t lose everything I worked hard for because of this nightmare."
Adrian paused. "Nightmare?"
Emilia inhaled shakily. "Sorry. I don’t know how to address this without hurting you."
"It’s okay." He breathed. "Did you take the deal?"
"No."
He was silent. "Good."
Emilia frowned slightly. "Good?"
"Yes."
"You don’t even know what they want."
"I know enough."
"What if they send everything to the school?"
"Then we’ll deal with the school."
"What if they send it to the authorities?"
"We’ll deal with that too."
She panicked. "What if they ruin my scholarship?"
Adrian’s expression hardened. "They won’t."
"You can’t promise that."
"I can promise that I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure they don’t."
Emilia went quiet.
Adrian leaned forward.
"Listen to me. Whoever sent those photographs wants you frightened enough to make a decision you wouldn’t otherwise make. They want you isolated."
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
Adrian’s eyebrows drew together. He pinched the bridge of his nose. "You’re supposed to be on my side right now."
Emilia drew her legs to herself. "I’m not sure that’s going to please our anonymous sender." She smiled softly.
"You’re agreeing with whoever that could be?"
"At the moment, yes." Emilia let out a tiny laugh.
It disappeared almost immediately.
Then she said quietly, "There was something else."
Adrian’s expression became serious. "What?"
"You could have at least told me there was someone else you wanted to take to the charity event."
Adrian frowned. "What are you talking about?"
Emilia didn’t answer.
"Emilia."
She remained silent.
Adrian sat forward. "Talk to me."
Still, she said nothing.
Then his phone vibrated. He got a new message. Two new photographs. He immediately opened them, and his face went blank.
The first image showed him against the wall outside the ballroom bathroom.
Courtney stood directly in front of him.
The angle made the scene look far more intimate than it had been.
The second photograph was worse. Courtney was pressed close to him, with her face inches from his.
Adrian stared at the screen, and then he cursed under his breath.
Emilia heard him.
Adrian looked at the photographs again. He remembered exactly when they had been taken.
His voice became controlled. "Emilia, listen to me."
She didn’t respond.
"Nothing happened between us."
"I know what the photographs look like." Emilia said. "Don’t explain."
Adrian stopped.
Emilia’s voice was quieter now. "Just answer one thing."
"What?"
"Was this payback because I went to dinner with Ethan?"
There was a long silence. On the other end of the call, Kylie slowly raised an eyebrow.
"Ethan?" she mouthed.
Emilia ignored her.
Adrian leaned back. "No."
Emilia said nothing.
"No, Emilia." His voice was firm. "I didn’t take Courtney to that event."
She swallowed at the sound of the woman’s name. "Then why was she there?"
"I don’t know."
"You didn’t know she would be there?"
"No."
"And you didn’t invite her?"
"No."
"Then why was she touching you?"
Adrian’s jaw tightened. "Because she wanted to provoke me."
Emilia closed her eyes. "Did you touch her?"
"No."
"Did you kiss her?"
"No." His voice hardened. He sounded repulsed by the idea of it.
"Did you have sex with her there?"
Adrian’s expression hardened. "No."
Emilia breathed out slowly.
"I need you to believe me when I tell you this."
"I’m listening."
"Don’t respond to that number."
"I haven’t."
"And don’t delete anything."
Emilia nodded. "I won’t."
"Don’t meet whoever sent those photographs."
"I wasn’t planning to."
He paused. "And don’t go anywhere alone."
Emilia frowned. "Adrian—"
"I’m serious."
"I have classes." She reminded him. "You can’t tell me to stop living my life."
"I’m not."
"Then what are you saying?"
"I’m saying that until I know who’s behind this, I don’t want you walking across campus alone."
Kylie watched Emilia’s expression.
"You sound scared," Emilia whispered.
Adrian went silent. "I am."
Her eyes softened.
His voice dropped. "And because they know enough about you to know exactly where to hurt you."
Emilia’s eyes became wet.
Adrian continued. "I don’t care about the photographs of me."
She blinked.
"They’re irrelevant."
"But they could make people think—"
He calmly interupted her. "I know what they could make people think." He paused. "What matters is that someone is trying to use them to hurt you."
Emilia looked down. "I was so scared."
"Don’t be, sweetheart."
She closed her eyes, and a tear slipped down her cheek.
Kylie noticed and reached for her hand.
Adrian’s voice softened. "Emilia."
"Yeah?"
"I’m sorry."
Her eyes opened. "For what?"
"For not being observant enough."
Emilia wiped her cheek. Her lips trembled. "Thank you."
Adrian leaned back.b"And I’m not going to blame you for being frightened."
She gave a tiny nod.
"But I need you to promise me something."
"What?"
"Next time something like this happens, you call me." His voice came out firm. "You call me immediately. Whereever you think I might be."
She hesitated. "I promise."
"Immediately." He added.
"Okay." She agreed. "Even if it’s three in the morning?"
Adrian smiled. "Even if you’re angry with me."
She smiled. She could hear the smike at the edge of Adrian’s voice, and it warmed her heart.
Adrian breathed out.
Neither spoke for a moment, until Emilia broke the silence.
Emilia whispered, "Adrian?"
"Yes?"
"Are you angry about Ethan?"
His eyebrows lifted. "Ethan?" Adrian’s expression became almost incredulous. "No, baby."
"You paused."
"Because I was trying to figure out why Ethan suddenly entered this conversation."
Emilia looked embarrassed. "The message said you’d throw me under the bus."
Adrian’s expression hardened. "That’s what they told you?"
"Yes."
"I would never trade your safety for my reputation."
Emilia stared ahead.
"And Blackwood?"
"My investigation is important."
She waited.
"But not more important than you."
Her breath caught.
Adrian’s voice remained steady. "You’re not a disposable part of my life, Emilia."
Her eyes filled again. She nodded slowly. "Okay."
Adrian glanced at the photographs again. "I need to make a call."
Emilia tightened her grip on the phone. "Adrian?"
"Yes?"
"See you on Friday."
His expression softened. "I look forward to Friday."
The call ended.
Emilia lowered her phone. For several seconds, she simply stared at the screen.
Kylie leaned closer. "Well?"
Emilia looked at her. "He wasn’t angry."
Emilia looked down at the photographs.
Kylie took the phone gently from her. "Now, while we let this lay for a moment, permit me to tell you about the most stupid mistake I made last night."
