Adrian remained seated long after the call ended.
His phone was still in his hand. He slowly lowered the phone onto his desk. His expression changed.
The warmth disappeared from his face.
What remained was cold calculation.
Someone had been watching Emilia. Someone had known where she went. And now someone had photographs of Courtney.
Adrian leaned back in his chair.
His fingers tapped once against the armrest, then stopped.
He stared at the wall in front of him.
It didn’t make sense. Dante’s signal had been detected in Switzerland. That wasn’t a guess.
Christian’s people had tracked the signal. They had watched it move across several locations. They had confirmed it twice.
So how had photographs taken in New York, or, more precisely, at the charity gala, and ended up in the hands of someone blackmailing Emilia?
Adrian reached for his phone.
He called Christian.
The answer came almost immediately.
"What?"
"Come to my office."
Christian was silent for a second. "Now?"
"Now."
"Give me twenty minutes."
"You have fifteen."
Christian sighed. "You’re charming tonight."
Adrian ended the call.
He opened the message from Emilia again.
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
He opened another.
This one was closer. Much closer. He zoomed in on the reflection of a nearby building, then he stopped.
His expression changed.
There was a reflection.
A dark vehicle parked across the street.
Adrian studied it.
He enlarged the image further. The license plate was almost impossible to see.
He grabbed his laptop.
Within seconds, the photograph was transferred onto the screen. He enhanced the image.
The license plate became clearer.
Adrian stared at it.
He recognized the vehicle. His jaw tightened, and he checked another photograph.
Adrian leaned back slowly. His eyes became cold. He opened a secure communication channel.
"Run this plate."
The response came quickly. "Give me a moment."
Adrian waited. His fingers remained perfectly still on the desk. A few seconds passed, then the voice returned.
"Registered to a shell company."
"Which one?"
There was a pause at the other end. "Northbridge Holdings."
Adrian’s eyes hardened. "Who owns it?"
"We’re tracing the ownership."
"Don’t trace it."
The man on the other end paused. "Sir?"
"Look at the second layer."
"What do you mean?"
"The company behind Northbridge."
There was another pause.
"We have something."
Adrian waited.
"Northbridge was acquired three years ago by another holding company."
"Name."
"Telswell Strategic."
Adrian’s expression changed. "Telswell Strategic?"
"Yes."
He leaned forward. "Who owns it?"
The line went quiet.
Adrian stared at the laptop. "Answer me."
"We’re checking."
A few seconds passed. Then the voice came back. "There’s no direct individual listed."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. "Find one."
"We’ll need—"
"Find one."
The call ended, and Adrian remained still.
He knew the name. It had appeared twice during his investigation into Blackwood.
He opened another file.
The same company appeared in several financial transfers connected to organizations that had been quietly moving money around Blackwood University.
Adrian’s breathing slowed.
He hadn’t connected it before. He had been looking for people. Someone was hiding behind companies.
Someone had been moving money through layers of corporations. And now the same network had access to Emilia.
His phone vibrated.
Christian.
Adrian answered. "Tell me you’re already inside the building."
"I’m in the elevator."
The elevator doors opened somewhere outside. A few seconds later, Christian walked into the office.
He closed the door behind him.
Adrian turned his laptop toward him. "Look."
Christian approached.
He stared at the photographs, and his expression slowly changed.
"Those are the ones Emilia received?"
"Yes."
Christian studied them. "Who took them?"
"Dante."
Christian’s eyes snapped toward Adrian. "What?"
"Dante."
"That’s impossible."
"That’s what I thought."
Christian walked closer to the desk.
Adrian pulled up another file. "You reported that Dante’s signal was detected in Switzerland just days ago again."
Christian nodded.
Adrian looked at the photographs. "These were taken over a much longer period."
Christian frowned.
"How long?"
"At least almost two months."
Christian’s expression hardened. "You’re saying Dante was in New York while we were tracking him in Switzerland?"
"That’s what I’m saying."
Christian stared at the screen. "Then the signal..."
"Wasn’t his."
Christian’s face became serious. "You’re sure?"
Adrian looked at him. "I’m starting to believe it."
Christian rubbed his jaw. "How?"
"I don’t know yet."
He switched to another screen. "This is the signal we tracked."
A map appeared.
Switzerland.
Christian stared at it.
Adrian brought up another map, and then another. "This is where Emilia was photographed."
The locations appeared.
Christian looked between them. "They overlap?"
"No."
"Then how do you know it’s connected?"
"Because the person who sent the photographs has access to information only a handful of people have."
Christian’s eyes narrowed. "Someone knew about Emilia?"
"Someone knew about me and Emilia."
"And Dante knew."
Adrian nodded.
Christian looked at him.
"There’s something else." Adrian’s gaze lifted. "The photographs."
"What about them?"
"Look at the timing."
Christian leaned closer. "These aren’t random."
"They were taken deliberately."
Christian studied one image. "Whoever took these was following her."
Adrian’s jaw clenched. "Not just her."
Christian looked at him.
"They were following me."
Christian straightened. "So Dante was monitoring both of you."
Christian walked around the desk. "There’s another problem." He inhaked softlh. "Why would Dante care whether Emilia believed that?"
Adrian’s expression changed.
He stared at the photographs. Something occurred to him, and then he sat back. "Because he isn’t trying to destroy me."
Christian frowned.
"He’s trying to destroy her trust in me first."
Christian stared at him.
Adrian continued. "If Emilia believes I’m going to abandon her, she’ll be easier to control, and forced to spu on me."
Christian’s eyes narrowed. "And if she takes the deal..."
"She gives them whatever they want."
Christian folded his arms. "Or access."
Adrian looked at him.
The room went silent.
Christian looked at the photographs again. "Then why send them to her?"
"Because she is the easiest way to get to me at the moment."
Christian nodded slowly.
Adrian looked down.
His expression changed. "But he wouldn’t blackmail Emilia."
Christian’s brows drew together. "Why not?"
"Because it doesn’t benefit him."
Christian stared.
Adrian continued. "If Dante wanted to hurt me, he’d come after me directly."
"Unless he’s being cautious."
"Dante isn’t cautious."
Christian almost smiled. "That’s true."
Adrian’s eyes returned to the photographs. "He likes people to know it’s him."
Christian nodded. He stared at the screen.
Adrian frowned. "Why is he blackmailing his daughter?"
Christian froze. "What?"
Adrian stared at the photographs. "Dante. She’s his daughter."
The words sounded strange even after he said them.
Christian’s face changed completely.
Adrian’s voice became colder. "He chose to photograph her, and he chose to send those photographs."
He paused briefly.
"He chose to threaten her." He rubbed his palms together. "And that’s what I don’t understand."
Christian walked toward the window.
Adrian thought about it, then he shook his head. "If Dante wanted something from me, he would contact me."
"Unless contacting you would expose him. Remember, he doesn’t want to be found."
"He’s already exposed."
"Not to Emilia."
Adrian froze.
Christian turned toward him. "She doesn’t know."
Adrian stared at him.
"She doesn’t know that the man threatening her is her father."
The room became completely silent.
Adrian slowly looked down at the photographs again. For the first time, the entire situation felt different.
This wasn’t merely an attack on Emilia.
This was a father hunting his own daughter, and Adrian couldn’t understand why.
He stood. "We need to find him."
Christian nodded. He tapped twice on his phone. "Already working on it."
"Forget the Switzerland signal."
Christian frowned. "You think it’s fake?"
"I think we need to know who generated it."
Christian nodded. "And the photographs?"
"Trace every one."
"Even the old ones?"
"Especially the old ones."
Christian turned toward the door.
Adrian’s voice stopped him. "Christian."
He looked back.
"If Dante really took these photographs..." Adrian’s eyes became ice-cold. "Then he was much closer to Emilia than we thought."
Christian nodded.
"And if he was close enough to photograph her..." Adrian finished quietly. "He was close enough to hurt her."
