SIX YEARS AGO:
Rowan’s cheek was pressed against the cold concrete.
She could barely breathe.
One man’s knee was planted between her shoulder blades while the other held both of her wrists behind her back. Her fingers scraped uselessly against the rough rooftop as she struggled beneath their weight.
"Let me go!"
Her voice cracked.
Neither man moved.
A helicopter sat several feet away, with its engine running.
The blades turned slowly overhead, each rotation slicing through the night air with a heavy, rhythmic thump.
Rowan twisted her head.
Courtney stood several feet in front of her.
She looked completely different from the confident and smiling woman Rowan knew. Her hair was disheveled, and her breathing was uneven.
And there were tears in her eyes.
In her hands was a folder containing several sheets of paper. She looked down at Rowan.
"Ask Adrian to sign these."
Rowan stared at her. Her cheek was still pressed against the concrete. "What?"
Courtney lifted the papers. "It’s simply a marriage agreement."
Rowan’s expression hardened. "My brother won’t marry you." Her voice was hoarse. "Never."
Courtney stared at her. For several seconds, she didn’t respond. Then she nodded.
The man holding Rowan’s arms released one hand.
Rowan barely had time to react before the back of his hand struck her across the face. Her head snapped sideways.
The other man hit her immediately afterward.
Rowan’s vision blurred.
A metallic taste filled her mouth. She swallowed, and blood slipped from her nose. She refused to cry.
Courtney watched her. "Now."
The two men grabbed Rowan and hauled her upright. Her knees nearly buckled. One of them caught her by the arm, and the other reached behind him.
Rowan’s breathing stopped. He was holding something. He was holding a black device, and a vest.
Her eyes widened. "No."
The man stepped toward her.
Rowan immediately tried to pull away. "What is that?"
Neither man answered. They forced the device around her waist.
Rowan’s heart began pounding violently. "No."
The straps tightened around her torso.
She looked down. A small digital display had been attached to the front. There was a remote-controlled trigger connected to it.
Her entire body began trembling. "No." Her voice cracked. She looked at Courtney. "What are you doing?"
Courtney walked closer. "Stand still."
Rowan shook her head.
"Stand still, Rowan."
"Courtney..."
"I don’t want to press this button too quickly."
Rowan’s lips trembled. Tears finally spilled down her cheeks. "Please."
Courtney’s face remained strangely calm. "I’ll call your brother right now."
Rowan stared at her.
"You will ask him to sign his copies of this marriage agreement."
She held the papers up.
Rowan shook her head. "He isn’t in love with you." She reminded, disgusted. Her voice broke. "You know that."
Courtney’s expression changed. Something dark flickered behind her eyes. "Love can be created."
Rowan stared at her.
Courtney stepped closer. "All he has to do is get married to me."
"That’s not how love works."
"It will be." Courtney’s jaw tightened. "You don’t understand."
"I understand perfectly."
Rowan wiped at her nose with the back of her hand. "You can’t force him to love you."
Courtney’s eyes got filled with tears again. For a moment, she looked almost heartbroken. Then the expression vanished.
"You’ve always been the problem."
Rowan stared at her. "What?"
"You." Courtney pointed at her. "You’re always there." Her voice began rising. "You’re always standing between us. Making his whole attention to be on you."
Rowan’s eyes hardened. "He doesn’t want you."
Courtney’s face twisted. She turned away. Her shoulders rose and fell.
The helicopter blades continued turning behind her.
Rowan looked toward the rooftop entrance. She was trapped.
The man behind her tightened his grip.
Rowan’s tears continued falling. "Courtney."
Courtney turned.
"Please."
Courtney stared at her. "Where is Adrian?"
"I don’t know."
"You know."
"I don’t."
Courtney walked toward her. "Call him."
Rowan swallowed. "I don’t have my phone."
Courtney reached into her pocket and pulled out a phone. She held it toward Rowan. "Then use mine."
Rowan stared at it.
Courtney unlocked the screen. "Call him."
Rowan’s fingers trembled. She reached for the phone. However, before she could take it, a gunshot cracked through the rooftop.
The man behind her suddenly went limp.
His grip disappeared.
Rowan stumbled forward. She turned.
The man collapsed onto the concrete.
Her eyes widened. There was a terrible silence. Then the second man fell too.
Rowan screamed.
Courtney immediately reacted. She stepped backward and raised the remote control. "Whoever you, don’t!"
Her voice rang across the rooftop.
Rowan froze.
Courtney’s eyes darted toward the shadows. She knew someone was there. "Come out!" She commanded.
She got no response, and Courtney tightened her grip around the remote.
"You’ll come out right now, Adrian!"
Rowan’s heart stopped.
Courtney raised the papers in her other hand. "And you’ll sign these."
Still she heard nothing.
"Or you’ll have to watch her blown apart."
Rowan’s breathing became shallow. "Adrian..."
Courtney’s eyes remained fixed on the darkness. "You have ten seconds." She lifted the remote. "Ten."
Rowan shook her head. "Courtney, please."
Courtney counted on. "Eight."
Rowan looked around desperately. Her voice broke. "Adrian, don’t!"
"Five."
Rowan’s tears fell harder.
"Four."
She screamed. "Adrian, please come out!"
The rooftop went silent. Then a figure stepped from the darkness.
Adrian.
He was holding a gun.
His eyes immediately found Rowan.
The moment he saw the bomb strapped around her waist, something inside his expression broke.
But he didn’t panic. He couldn’t. Not in front of her.
His eyes remained on Rowan. "It’s okay."
Rowan shook her head violently.
"I’m here." He assured her.
Courtney smiled. It was the first genuine smile she’d given that night. "Adrian."
He didn’t look at her.
His gaze remained on Rowan. "Keep looking at me."
Rowan’s lips trembled. "Adrian..."
"I’ve got you."
Courtney laughed softly. "Drop the gun."
Adrian slowly lowered his hand.
"Don’t do anything stupid." Courtney raised the remote. "Drop it."
Adrian looked at Rowan, then he released the gun. It hit the concrete.
Courtney’s smile widened. "Good."
She walked toward Rowan.
Rowan stepped backward. "Stay away from me."
Courtney reached her. She grabbed a fistful of Rowan’s hair from behind.
Rowan cried out. "Let go!"
Courtney pulled her backward. "Move."
Rowan stumbled.
Courtney dragged her toward the helicopter.
Adrian’s expression hardened. "Let her go."
Courtney ignored him.
She pulled Rowan closer to the helicopter. "Come on."
Rowan tried to resist.
Courtney tightened her grip. "Move!"
Rowan stumbled up the small steps.
Courtney shoved her inside.
Adrian moved fast.
Courtney grabbed the door. She started pulling it closed.
Adrian reached behind his waist. His fingers found the small sheath attached to his belt. He pulled out the knife.
Courtney saw the movement, and her eyes widened. Before she would think, Adrian threw it.
The blade crossed the distance between them. It struck Courtney in the lower abdomen.
She gasped, and her hand flew to her stomach. The remote slipped from her fingers. She collapsed backward.
Rowan screamed. "Courtney!"
The remote hit the floor.
Adrian ran toward the helicopter.
The remaining man in the helicopter reached for his weapon.
Adrian fired first.
The man dropped.
Adrian reached Rowan. "Come on!"
Rowan was frozen. She couldn’t move. Her eyes were fixed on Courtney.
Courtney was lying on the helicopter floor. Blood stained her clothes, but her hand was moving toward the remote.
Rowan saw it.
Courtney’s fingers closed around it.
She smiled, and then pressed the button.
A sharp electronic beep sounded.
Adrian looked down. The display attached to Rowan’s waist had changed.
00:59
His blood went cold.
She looked at him. "Adrian?"
"We’re getting out."
The helicopter began to shake. The engine roared louder. Adrian grabbed the straps around Rowan’s waist.
His fingers moved quickly.
He tried the first buckle. It wouldn’t release.
"Come on." He pulled harder.
Rowan was crying. "Adrian."
"Look at me."
She did. "I’m going to get this off you."
"I can’t."
"You can."
"I can’t!"
"Rowan!" He yelled at her.
She froze.
Adrian’s eyes held hers. "Trust me." His voice softened.
The timer continued.
00:46
Adrian pulled the knife from Courtney’s body.
He didn’t stop to look at her. He used the blade to cut through the straps securing the device to Rowan.
The first strap snapped, and the vest shifted.
Adrian grabbed it. "Get down."
Rowan crouched.
He cut the remaining strap.
The bomb came loose.
Adrian grabbed it and threw it toward the far side of the helicopter. It landed several feet away.
The timer continued.
00:31
Adrian grabbed Rowan. "Run."
They moved.
Rowan stumbled. Adrian caught her around the waist. The helicopter was still running behind them.
"Keep going!"
They reached a concrete barrier.
Adrian pushed Rowan behind it.
He covered her body with his.
The timer reached 00:10
Rowan buried her face against his chest.
Adrian held her tightly. "Don’t look."
She clung to him. "Adrian..."
00:05
His arms tightened around her.
00:04
00:03
00:02
00:01
The explosion tore through the rooftop.
The sound was enormous. Rowan felt the world disappear.
Heat struck her side and she screamed.
Adrian’s body shielded most of her. The blast threw debris across the rooftop. The helicopter erupted into flames.
Adrian was knocked sideways, but he refused to release Rowan.
He grabbed her and pulled her farther behind the concrete barrier.
"Stay down!"
Smoke swallowed everything.
Rowan coughed. Her ears rang. She couldn’t see. "Adrian?"
"I’m still here."
She felt his hands searching her body. "Are you hurt?"
"My stomach."
He looked down. Her clothes were torn along one side. The blast had burned the exposed skin around her abdomen.
Adrian’s expression changed.
He immediately pulled his jacket off and wrapped it around her.
"Don’t touch it."
"It hurts." She sniffed.
"I know."
Rowan looked toward the helicopter. The flames were consuming it. Courtney was still inside.
Rowan’s eyes widened.
"Courtney..."
Adrian looked at the burning helicopter. The flames intensified, and the helicopter exploded again.
Rowan flinched.
Adrian pulled her against him.
She buried her face against his chest, and tears streamed down her face.
She was shaking violently.
Adrian held her.
Rowan couldn’t stop trembling.
"She was supposed to die." Adrian looked at the flames.
"She’s gone." Rowan said.
He didn’t answer.
Rowan looked up at him. "Isn’t she?"
Adrian’s eyes remained fixed on the burning helicopter. He didn’t know. But there was no way anyone could have survived that.
