Present Day:

Rowan didn’t call Adrian. She didn’t text him either. She simply drove down to his penthouse.

Her hands remained tight around the steering wheel the entire way to his penthouse, her mind replaying the same image over and over again.

Courtney.

Alive, and standing in front of her. Speaking to her. In flesh and blood.

Rowan’s stomach twisted. She had spent six years believing that woman was dead.

Six years. Six years of nightmares. Six years of remembering the explosion. Six years of carrying the scar Courtney had left on her body.

Rowan pulled into the underground parking garage beneath Adrian’s building.

She parked badly, and she didn’t care. She climbed out of the car, grabbed her bag, and headed toward the private elevator.

The security guard at the entrance recognized her immediately.

"Ms. Rowan."

She barely looked at him. "Adrian?"

"He’s upstairs in his study."

The guard hesitated. Something about her expression made him decide not to ask anything else.

The elevator doors opened.

Rowan stepped inside.

The doors closed, and she stared at her reflection in the polished metal. Her hair was still half-covered in the remnants of the salon treatment.

The green strands were gone.

The red dye hadn’t even been finished. She had left halfway through. She looked ridiculous, and she didn’t care.

Her mind was somewhere else.

The elevator climbed.

Rowan’s heart beat harder with every floor. When the doors opened, she walked directly toward the hallway of his study.

She pressed the bell once, and pressed her palm on the hand scanner.

The door opened almost immediately.

Adrian stood there. He was wearing a dark shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms.

His expression softened when he saw her.

"Rowan?"

She walked inside without saying anything.

The door closed by itself.

"What’s wrong?"

Rowan kept walking.

"Rowan."

She stopped.

Adrian looked at her carefully.

He knew her. He knew when she was angry. He knew when she was upset. He knew when she was hiding something.

And right now, she looked like she had just seen a ghost.

"What happened?"

Rowan turned around. Her eyes were already wet. "Courtney is alive."

Adrian’s expression didn’t change. Not even slightly.

Rowan stared at him. Her heart sank. She had expected shock, and confusion. She had expected him to ask if she was sure.

Instead, he simply looked at her calmly.

Rowan’s lips parted. "You knew."

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

Rowan stared at him. "You knew."

His jaw tightened slightly. "Rowan—"

"How long?" Her voice cracked. "How long have you known?"

Adrian exhaled slowly.

"Not long."

"How long?"

"Two months ago."

Rowan’s eyes widened. "Two months ago?"

"Yes."

She laughed once. There was no humor in it. "That’s funny."

Adrian’s brows drew together. "What’s funny?"

"I’ve spent six years believing she was dead."

He remained silent.

"I saw her today."

Adrian’s expression softened. "Where?"

"At my salon."

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

Adrian’s voice hardened. "Did she hurt you?"

"No."

"Did she threaten you?"

Rowan looked away. "Not directly."

Adrian took a step closer. "What did she say?"

Rowan swallowed. "She told me to tell you she’s alive."

Adrian’s face hardened.

She stared at him. "So you knew." Her eyes filled. "Was I too irrelevant to be told?"

Adrian’s expression immediately changed. "No."

"Then why?" Rowan shook her head, and looked at him.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Adrian moved closer. "Come sit down."

Rowan didn’t move. "I don’t want to sit down."

"Okay."

He stopped, and didn’t push.

"You should have told me," Rowan whispered.

"I should have." He admitted.

The simple admission made her eyes sting.

Rowan looked at him. "I didn’t need protection from the truth." Her voice trembled. "I’ve spent years thinking about that night."

Adrian’s expression softened.

"I still remember the explosion."

He looked down.

Her hand moved unconsciously toward her stomach.

His eyes followed the movement.

Rowan lowered her hand. "I don’t understand." She whispered. "She was supposed to be dead."

Adrian looked at her. "The helicopter exploded. Everything inside it should have been destroyed."

"Then how is she alive?"

"I don’t know."

Rowan shook her head. "She told me it almost all went dark."

Adrian’s eyes narrowed. "What?"

"She said, ’I’m gonna tell you the truth, it almost all went dark.’"

Adrian repeated the words quietly. "It almost all went dark."

Rowan nodded. "She sounded like she wanted me to know she almost died." Her eyes hardened. "She didn’t look sorry."

"She looked..." Rowan struggled to find the word. "Pleased."

Adrian didn’t respond.

"Like she wanted me to be afraid." Rowan stared at him. "Why?"

Adrian walked toward the living room of hia study. Rowan followed reluctantly. He poured her a glass of water and handed it to her.

She took it with trembling fingers.

Adrian sat across from her. "Tell me everything."

Rowan stared at the glass. "I was at the salon."

"Why?"

"I was changing my hair."

He looked at her hair. "You were changing the green."

"Yes."

"What happened?"

"I went to the bathroom to change into the salon robe." She swallowed. "When I walked out, I bumped into her."

Adrian remained silent.

Rowan’s voice dropped. "I said her name."

Adrian waited.

"She said, ’Yes. In flesh and blood.’" Rowan looked at him. "I almost couldn’t breathe."

Adrian leaned forward. "Did she tell you where she’d been?"

"No." Rowan stared at him. "Adrian."

"Yes?"

"What are you going to do?"

His expression became unreadable. "Find her."

Rowan shook her head. "Don’t."

Adrian looked at her. "Don’t?"

"I don’t want you rushing after her."

"I’m not going to rush."

Rowan’s fingers tightened around the glass. "I hate her."

Adrian didn’t correct her. "You don’t have to forgive her." Rowan looked up. "She put that bomb on me."

Rowan looked down. "I hate that she survived."

Adrian was quiet for a moment. Then he said softly, "You’re allowed to feel that way."

Rowan’s eyes lifted. "You don’t think I’m horrible?"

"No." He scoffed. "You’re not responsible for forgiving someone who tried to kill you."

Her lips trembled.

She looked away quickly. "I need a plastic surgeon."

Adrian’s expression changed.

Rowan touched her stomach. "I want to have the burns removed."

He looked at her hand. Then at her face. "You’ve wanted that for a while." He noticed.

She nodded. "I’ve thought about it."

"Why didn’t you tell me?"

"I didn’t want to bother you."

Adrian’s eyebrows drew together. "Rowan."

She looked at him.

"You’re my sister. You could never bother me." He leaned forward. "How bad is the scar?"

"It’s not horrible." Rowan hesitated. "It’s noticeable."

Adrian nodded. "Does it still hurt?"

"Sometimes."

"Does the skin pull?"

"Sometimes." Rowan added. "I didn’t want anyone touching it."

Adrian understood. "Okay."

Rowan looked at him. "I want it gone."

He nodded. "Then we’ll find someone."

"Today?"

"If that’s what you want."

She stared at him. "I want someone good."

"The best."

He gave her a look. "Rowan."

She smiled faintly.

He reached for his phone. "I’ll have someone contact the specialist."

Adrian stood up to make the call.

Rowan stared through the glass she held.

"Adrian?"

"Yes?"

She hesitated. "If the surgeon says it can’t be completely removed..."

He waited.

"What then?"

Adrian’s expression softened. He placed a hand gently on her shoulder.

Rowan leaned into him.

For a few seconds, neither spoke. Then Adrian said quietly, "We’ll deal with Courtney."

Rowan closed her eyes. "And this time?"

Adrian’s voice hardened. "She doesn’t get near you."

Rowan nodded.

She believed him. At least, she wanted to.
