Kylie sat in front of the mirror, with one hand holding a mascara wand while the other steadied her cheek.
She leaned closer to the mirror, and brushed one careful stroke. Then another.
She blinked. "Perfect." She mouthed with a smile.
Behind her, Emilia was standing in front of the closet, holding two tops against herself.
"Black or white?"
Kylie didn’t look away from the mirror. "White."
Emilia switched tops. "What about this?"
"Still white."
"You didn’t even look."
"I know you."
Emilia laughed softly.
She finally settled on a simple white fitted top with a pair of dark jeans. Nothing dramatic that required too much thought.
She brushed her hair and glanced at Kylie through the mirror.
Kylie was anything but simple.
She had changed into a short leather skirt, a fitted black jacket, and knee-high black boots. Her blonde hair fell loosely around her shoulders with her bangs framing her face, and she’d added just enough makeup to make her blue eyes stand out.
Emilia looked at her outfit. "Are we just going to the movies?"
Kylie shook her head as she carefully applied lip gloss. "I might end up at a racing site."
Emilia stopped brushing her hair. She frowned, then one eyebrow rose.
Kylie caught the expression in the mirror and laughed. "No racing site." She capped the lip gloss. "I just want to get laid tonight."
Emilia stared at her.
There was a beat of silence.
Then she nodded slowly, her expression somewhere between amusement and disbelief.
"You got laid just three days ago, Kylie." She picked up the hairbrush again and ran it through her hair. "And from how good you said it was, three days is too short for you to want another."
Kylie snorted. She reached down and pulled on one of her boots. "If I were living with that human, I would have wanted sex with him every second." She zipped the boot. "Too bad I don’t sleep with the same person twice."
Emilia smiled.
Kylie glanced at her. "What?"
"Nothing."
"You have that look."
"What look?"
"The one that says you’re judging me."
"I’m not judging you."
"You’re smiling."
"Because you’re ridiculous."
Kylie grabbed the second boot. "I prefer adventurous."
"That’s not the word I’d use."
"Of course it isn’t."
Emilia laughed.
Kylie slipped into the second boot and stood. She checked herself in the mirror. "How do I look?"
"Like you’re about to make terrible decisions."
"Perfect."
Emilia shook her head.
Kylie grabbed her purse. "Come on."
"You’re not even going to pretend we’re going there for the movie?"
Kylie opened the door. "I like movies."
"You haven’t even asked what we’re watching."
"I’ll figure it out when we get there."
Emilia laughed as she followed her out.
Kylie smiled. "I love you too."
.....
The cinema was busier than Emilia expected.
It was Friday night, and the lobby was filled with groups of students, couples, and families waiting in line for tickets and snacks.
Kylie looked around. "Okay."
Emilia glanced at her. "What?"
"Maybe this was a mistake."
"You dragged me here."
"I know."
"Then stop complaining."
"I’m not complaining." Kylie looked at the movie posters. "We could have stayed in your dorm."
"And done what?"
Kylie looked at her. "You should have left to your professor’s house."
Emilia raised an eyebrow.
Kylie laughed.
They collected their tickets and headed inside. The movie had already started previews by the time they found their seats.
Emilia sat down first.
Kylie dropped into the seat beside her. She leaned toward Emilia and kissed her cheek.
"I’ll be back."
Emilia looked at her. "Where are you going?"
"Snacks."
"We just bought popcorn."
"I want something else."
"What?"
"Doughnuts."
Emilia smiled. "Okay."
Kylie stood. "Do you want anything?"
"No."
"Sure?"
Emilia nodded. "I’m fine."
Kylie nodded. "Okay." She leaned down again, and whispered. "Don’t let anyone steal my seat."
Emilia smiled. "I won’t."
Kylie headed toward the lobby.
The movie theater wasn’t completely dark yet. The advertisements playing on the screen cast shifting light across the seats as people continued settling in.
Kylie walked toward the snack counter.
There were two people ahead of her. She pulled out her phone and checked her messages.
There was six messaages from Christian, and nothing interesting. She sighed and slipped it back into her purse.
A few moments later, she reached the counter.
"Hi."
The cashier smiled. "Hi. What can I get you?"
"Doughnuts. The chocolate ones."
"How many?"
"Four."
"And anything else?"
Kylie glanced at the display. "Two bottles of water."
The cashier turned to collect them.
"Let me pay for that." An unfamiliar voice came from beside her.
Kylie didn’t turn. She simply pulled her card from her purse. "No, thank you."
The man beside her smiled. "I don’t mind."
Kylie handed her card to the cashier.
"Take his out of the money, and keep a $50 change as a tip."
The cashier blinked.
The man beside her tilted his head. He looked genuinely taken aback.
Kylie picked up her receipt. "Have a good night."
She turned.
The man laughed softly. "Okay."
She looked back. "What?"
"You didn’t even let me buy you a drink."
"I don’t need one."
He smiled. He was handsome. Not in the intimidating way Christian was. This guy looked more approachable with warm green eyes.
He wore a relaxed smile, and he was exactly her height. Kylie gave him a quick once-over glance. Then she noticed they were exactly the same height.
Damn.
That was unfortunate. Eight out of ten.
The man noticed her looking. His smile widened. "Are you always this difficult?"
Kylie didn’t respond to that.
"Can I get your number?" He cleared his throat, and asked softly.
Kylie stared at him.bShe considered him for a second. Handsome, and a good smile. An eight out of ten for being the same height as she was.
She pulled out her phone. "Sure." She unlocked it and handed it to him.
He typed his number, then he called himself so he would have hers.
Her phone rang, and she saved the contact. "What’s your name?"
"Daniel."
"Kylie."
Daniel smiled.
"So I’ll see you again?"
"Maybe."
"That’s better than no."
"Don’t get excited."
"I’ll try." Kylie picked up her snacks. "Goodnight, Daniel."
From the other end of the snacks spot, Christian stood with a paper bag rested in one hand.
His eyes had been fixed on Kylie the entire time.
He had watched her laugh, he had watched the stranger approach her, and he had watched her ignore him. Then he’d watched her give him her number.
Christian watched her with his expression unreadable.
The man behind the doughnut counter looked at him. "Sir?"
Christian finally looked down at the paper bag in his hand.
He had bought the doughnuts for her when he caught sight of her walking out of the theater. He’d been standing there debating whether to surprise her.
Apparently, he’d arrived just in time to watch her give her number to another man.
Christian looked toward the theater doors again.
