Adrian’s office was usually the quietest place in the building.

When Adrian pushed open the door that afternoon, he immediately knew something was wrong.

Someone was sitting on his couch.

A woman.

She was perfectly relaxed, with one leg crossed over the other, and a glass of wine resting loosely between her fingers.

Courtney.

Adrian stopped in the doorway.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Courtney lifted the glass toward the light and examined the wine inside.

"This is really good wine."

Adrian’s expression remained completely blank.

She took another sip. "How much does this cost?"

Adrian closed the door behind him. "What are you doing in my office?"

Courtney smiled. "And hello to you too."

"How did you get in?"

She shrugged casually. "I told your head of security that I was your girlfriend and that I wanted to surprise you."

Adrian raised one eyebrow.

Courtney smiled wider. "Wondering how they just let me in after saying that?"

She reached for her phone. "Well..." She unlocked the screen and held it toward him. "I simply showed him this."

Adrian’s eyes dropped to the photograph.

His expression changed slightly. It was an old photograph.

He stood beside Courtney, with one arm loosely around her shoulders. Courtney was smiling in the photo.

Rowan had made him agree to it.

Adrian stared at the image for a moment.

Courtney’s smile softened. "You remembered." Her eyes became glassy. "This is the only one we ever had."

She lowered the phone. "You hate pictures."

Adrian’s jaw tightened. He walked toward his desk. "Leave."

Her expression fell. "What?"

"You heard me."

"I came here to talk to you."

"I don’t care."

"Adrian—"

"Leave."

Courtney remained seated. Instead, she slowly placed the wineglass on the table.

"You haven’t changed."

Adrian stopped beside his desk. "No."

"You’re still cold."

"I said leave."

Courtney’s fingers tightened around the edge of her coat. Then she slowly stood.

Adrian expected her to walk toward the door.

She didn’t. Instead, she reached for the buttons of her coat. She removed it and allowed it to fall over the back of the couch.

Adrian’s eyes briefly moved toward her arms, then stopped. Burn scars covered much of her skin.

Some were old and faded.

Others were more pronounced.

Adrian looked at them for barely a second before returning his gaze to her face.

His expression hardened. "Leave."

Courtney laughed bitterly. "You don’t even want to ask what happened?" Her lips trembled. "You should apologise."

Adrian stared at her. "For what?"

"For leaving me out there to die."

His brows drew together. "Leaving you out there to die?"

"Yes." Courtney’s eyes filled with tears. "I loved you, Adrian."

He said nothing.

"All I wanted from you was marriage."

Adrian’s expression remained cold. "The deal was six months."

Courtney’s face twisted. "Don’t."

"Six months," Adrian repeated. "Then we moved on to different partners. That was the arrangement."

"You’re talking about us like we were some business transaction."

"That is what it was."

Her eyes widened. "You really are unbelievable." She cursed.

"What is wrong with you?" Adrian asked her.

Courtney stared at him. "What’s wrong with me?" Her voice rose. "What’s wrong with me is that I fell in love with you!"

Adrian remained cold.

"I loved you, Adrian!" Her voice echoed through the office. "I loved you. I gave you everything I had."

She wiped angrily at her her cheeks wiping the sudden tears.

"If Sophia wasn’t your mother, I would have thought you were raised without love because of how much you avoided it."

Adrian’s expression darkened at the mention of a mother.

"But you weren’t," Courtney continued. "You were raised with so much love. So what was your issue?"

She stepped closer. "Why couldn’t you just love me back?"

Adrian stared at her. Then his voice became colder. "You clothed Rowan with a bomb."

Courtney’s face changed.

Adrian continued. "She was seventeen." His jaw tightened. "A child."

Courtney scoffed. "Oh, please." She pointed at him. "This isn’t about Rowan." She shook her head. "You’re using her as an excuse."

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

Courtney stepped closer. "Tell me why."

He didn’t answer.

"Tell me why you couldn’t even pretend to love me."

Adrian’s expression remained unreadable. "You want the truth?"

"Yes."

"You couldn’t accept the truth."

Courtney’s breathing became uneven. "Try me."

"I didn’t love you."

Her face crumpled.

Adrian didn’t look away. He stared her dead in her eyes, and repeated. "I never did."

A tear slid down her cheek. "You’re lying."

"No."

"You have no idea how many times I waited for you to say it." Courtney stared at him. "You’re cruel."

"So are you."

Her hand trembled. "You don’t get to say that."

"I do."

"You abandoned me." Her voice cracked. "I woke up alone. Burned. Injured. Terrified. And you didn’t come."

Adrian’s eyes remained fixed on hers.

Courtney stared at him, waiting for him to say something, or even show an expression. He didn’t.

That made her crazy. Her hand shot toward the wine bottle.

Adrian saw it a fraction of a second too late.

She grabbed the bottle and hurled it. He ducked. The bottle flew past his head and slammed into the soundproof door.

The glass shattered across the floor.

Adrian straightened slowly. His eyes moved from the broken bottle to Courtney.

She was breathing heavily. Her chest rose and fell. For one brief moment, Adrian didn’t see Courtney.

He saw someone else.

His biological mother.

The same anger. The same volatility. The same look in her eyes when reason disappeared and emotion took control.

Adrian went cold. He pointed at Courtney. His voice was calm. "This is exactly why I couldn’t love you, Courtney."

She stared at him. "What?"

"This." He gestured toward the shattered glass. "The moment you don’t get what you want, you destroy everything around you."

Courtney’s expression twisted. "You think you’re better than me?"

Adrian’s jaw tightened. "I didn’t say that."

"You don’t have to!" She stepped forward. "You’ve always looked at me like I was beneath you."

"Because you keep proving that you can’t control yourself."

Her face hardened. "Fuck you."

"Leave."

"No."

"Courtney."

"No!"

She shoved a chair aside.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed. "Calm down."

"Don’t tell me to calm down!" She moved toward him. "You don’t get to dismiss me after everything I did for you. I gave you my heart, and then you needed space."

"I never asked you to do those things."

"You used me!"

"No."

"You did!" Courtney pushed against his chest.

Adrian barely moved. "Get out."

She pushed him again. "You owe me!"

Adrian caught her wrists, stopping her. "Enough."

"Let go of me!" She struggled. "Let me go!"

"Stop."

"Adrian!"

She twisted violently, trying to pull herself free.

Adrian’s restraint finally snapped. He moved quickly. He caught her from behind, securing her arms and forcing her away from the desk.

"Fucking calm down!"

Courtney continued struggling. "Let me go!"

"You’re going to hurt yourself."

"I don’t care!"

Adrian tightened his grip enough to stop her from swinging at him again.

"Courtney."

She kicked backward. "Let me go!"

"Stop fighting me."

"Why?" Her voice cracked. "Why do you care now?" she yelled.

Adrian said nothing.

She became still for half a second. Then she whispered, "You never cared."

Adrian’s grip loosened slightly.

Courtney turned her head. Their eyes met, and her eyes got filled again. She looked away.

For several seconds, the office was silent except for their breathing.

Then, the door opened.

"Adrian, I—"

Emilia’s voice stopped.

Adrian froze.

Courtney froze.

Emilia stood in the doorway.

The smile she’d entered with disappeared instantly.

Her eyes moved from Adrian... to Courtney... to the shattered bottle on the floor. Then back to Adrian.

She said nothing.

Adrian’s expression changed.

"Emilia."

She stared at him. Her hand remained on the door handle.
