Monday morning came with the familiar chaos of Blackwood University.
Students filled the lecture hall, with conversations overlapping as laptops opened, notebooks were pulled from bags, and chairs scraped against the floor.
Emilia sat beside Lucy, arranging her pens on the desk.
She had barely finished when the classroom door opened.
The room gradually quieted as Adrian walked in.
He was dressed in a dark suit, carrying a thin folder beneath one arm. His expression was composed, professional, and completely unreadable.
Professor Ashford.
Nothing more.
At least, that was what everyone else saw.
Emilia’s eyes lifted.
His eyes found hers almost immediately. For one brief second, they simply remained in the circle of each other’s gaze.
Then Adrian continued toward the front of the classroom.
Emilia lowered her eyes, trying desperately to hide the small mischievous smile threatening to appear on her lips.
She felt her phone vibrate.
She frowned.
Adrian hadn’t even reached his desk yet.
She slipped her hand beneath the table and checked the screen.
Adrian: You are gorgeous. Try not to smile when you read this.
Emilia’s lips immediately curved into a field, betraying her. She quickly pressed them together.
It didn’t work. Heat crept into her cheeks.
Lucy noticed. She nudged Emilia gently with her elbow. "Professor Ashford is here." She whispered cautiously.
Emilia cleared her throat and quickly locked her phone. "Oh."
She slipped it back into her bag and faced the front.
Adrian placed his folder on the desk. His eyes briefly found hers again. The faintest amusement appeared in them.
Emilia immediately looked away.
Lucy turned toward the front.
Emilia took a slow breath.
The class began.
Adrian moved toward the board. "Today, we’re going to discuss government intervention in national finance."
The room became quiet.
He wrote several figures on the board before turning around.
"Suppose a government is experiencing a simultaneous rise in public debt, declining tax revenue, increasing inflation, and slowing economic growth."
Several students immediately began taking notes.
Adrian continued.
"Assume the government has limited fiscal space and cannot simply increase spending without worsening its debt position. At the same time, reducing expenditure too aggressively could deepen the economic slowdown."
He looked around the room.
"Given those conditions, what combination of fiscal and monetary responses would you recommend, and what would you prioritize first?"
Silence fell upon the class.
Emilia stared at him.
Five seconds passed, then another.
Her eyes widened, when he gestured towards her. Was he serious?
She looked around the classroom.
Nobody seemed willing to volunteer.
Adrian’s gaze settled directly on her. "Miss Hayes."
Lucy’s eyes widened. "Oh no." Her cheeks reddened with potential embarrassment.
Emilia slowly turned toward Adrian "Yes, Professor?"
"Your answer."
Her heart dropped.
She stared at him for another second. Was he actually trying to embarrass her? That question was ridiculous.
It sounded like something meant for a much higher level.
She swallowed and cleared her throat. Then she straightened in her chair. She let out a long exhale, and parted her lips qith the best answer she could come up with.
"The government would need to balance stabilization with fiscal sustainability rather than treating the problems separately."
Adrian remained silent.
Emilia continued.
"First, monetary policy would need to focus on controlling inflation, but tightening too aggressively could further weaken economic activity. So the response would need to be measured and dependent on the source of the inflation."
A few students stopped writing.
They were listening now.
"On the fiscal side, the government shouldn’t respond with broad spending cuts because that could worsen the slowdown. Instead, it should prioritize essential and productive expenditure while reducing inefficient spending and imprFoving revenue collection."
Adrian’s expression remained neutral.
Emilia slowly 5gained confidence. "And because debt is already high, the government should focus on improving the quality of spending rather than simply increasing the size of the budget. It could also strengthen tax administration and close revenue leakages without relying entirely on higher tax rates."
Adrian watched her carefully. "And what would be your immediate priority?" he threw another question at her.
Emilia paused. "Price stability."
She held his gaze.
"Because if inflation remains uncontrolled, household purchasing power continues falling, investment becomes more uncertain, and any fiscal measures become harder to manage. But the government would need to avoid policies that unnecessarily worsen unemployment and economic contraction."
The room was completely silent.
Adrian nodded once. "Good."
Emilia released a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding.
Then Adrian added, "Now let’s change one variable."
Her stomach dropped again.
Lucy whispered, "Please, no."
Adrian continued.
"Suppose inflation is falling, but unemployment suddenly rises sharply because private investment collapses. The government still has high debt and limited fiscal space. What changes?"
Emilia looked at him. No, she glared at him
She thought for a few seconds.
Then she answered.
"In that situation, the priority would shift toward supporting economic activity without undermining the progress already made on inflation."
Adrian’s eyebrows lifted slightly.
Emilia continued.
"The government could redirect existing expenditure toward sectors with stronger employment and economic multipliers instead of introducing a large new spending package. It could also use targeted incentives to encourage private investment."
She paused.
"And if monetary conditions allow it, the central bank could gradually loosen policy rather than maintaining unnecessarily restrictive conditions."
Adrian watched her.
Emilia held his gaze.
"The key would be targeting the intervention. The government shouldn’t spend simply because unemployment is high. It should spend where the spending is most likely to stimulate production, employment, and future revenue."
For a moment, Adrian said nothing. Then the corner of his mouth lifted. It was barely there. It existed as a secret flash of pride.
He nodded. "Very good. You may sit."
Emilia slowly sat down.
Lucy stared at her. "What just happened?"
Emilia blinked. "I don’t know."
Ethan, sitting a few seats away, suddenly gave her a single clap.
Emilia looked toward him.
He smiled.
Another clap followed, then another. Within seconds, the entire class joined in. Three loud rounds of applause filled the lecture hall.
Emilia’s cheeks warmed.
She smiled awkwardly. But her eyes didn’t leave Adrian. Neither did his. He stood at the front of the room, watching her with that same restrained expression.
She lowered her gaze and reached into her bag. She might never forgive him for doing this.
Her phone came out beneath the desk.
She quickly typed.
Emilia: You almost destroyed my self-esteem.
She paused.
Then added:
Emilia: What if I wasn’t able to answer that? That question shouldn’t even be for my level.
She pressed send.
At the front of the room, Adrian’s phone vibrated.
His eyes dropped toward it.
He read the message.
For the first time since entering the classroom, his professional expression almost cracked.
He typed a response.
Adrian: You answered it.
A second message appeared immediately.
Adrian: And you answered it brilliantly.
Emilia stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
Adrian: I wasn’t trying to embarrass you, sweetheart.
Her heart fluttered.
She glanced toward him.
Adrian had already put his phone away. He looked completely composed again. Professor Ashford had returned.
Emilia lowered her eyes to her phone, fighting a smile.
Emilia: Still mean.
She sent it.
At the front of the room, Adrian’s phone vibrated again.
He glanced down. A faint smile appeared on his lips. Really faint.
Adrian: I’ll make it up to you.
Emilia’s eyebrows lifted.
She immediately typed:
Emilia: How?
Adrian read the message.
His eyes lifted. He looked directly at her. Then he typed only four words.
Adrian: Visit my office briefly today.
Emilia stared at the screen.
Her cheeks immediately turned warm again. She locked her phone and slipped it back into her bag.
Lucy looked at her suspiciously. "Why are you smiling?"
Emilia faced the board.
"I’m not."
"You are."
"Pay attention."
Lucy narrowed her eyes. "Something is definitely going on with you."
