Emilia knocked once.

Before Adrian could answer, she opened the door.

"Adrian, I—" Her voice stopped.

Adrian froze.

Courtney froze.

Emilia stood in the doorway, her hand still resting on the handle.

The smile she had entered with disappeared instantly. Her eyes moved slowly across the room.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Adrian’s expression softened. "Emilia."

She swallowed. Her gaze dropped to the broken glass again before returning to him. Then she looked at the woman.

That was when she noticed the scars.

They covered portions of Courtney’s arms, some faded with time, and others more visible beneath the office lighting.

Emilia’s stomach tightened.

She knew who she was.

Courtney.

Adrian’s ex.

The woman he’d once been involved with. The woman Emilia had heard almost nothing about from him, but more from Rowan.

She forced herself to breathe normally. Whatever she was feeling, she refused to let it show.

Her expression became carefully neutral.

"I can come another time, Professor Ashford." She turned around.

Adrian immediately moved. "Don’t move."

Emilia stopped.

"The glasses," he said, his voice tight with urgency.

She stared at the door. Her back remained toward him.

Adrian stepped away from Courtney.

He crossed the room quickly.

Emilia heard his footsteps approaching. She didn’t turn around. Then his large hand covered hers on the door handle.

She flinched slightly when he touched her.

Adrian noticed.

He carefully lowered the handle and pushed the door closed. The click sounded unnaturally loud.

He remained behind her.

His chest was almost touching her back. Then he lowered his head. His lips came close to her ear.

"This was an accident," he whispered. "She shouldn’t be here."

Emilia said nothing. Her eyes closed briefly. Her free hand curled into a tight fist.

Adrian noticed the tension in her shoulders. He leaned closer. "I’m sorry." He whaieor3d, tenderly kissing her earlobe.

Then, his lips touched the center of her head. He gave her a gentle kiss there, then another. He moved slowly toward the back of her head, pressing soft kisses into her hair.

"I should have handled this before you walked in."

Emilia’s eyes remained closed. She couldn’t make herself answer.

Behind them, Courtney scoffed.

"A student?"

Adrian stopped.

Courtney reached for her phone. She unlocked it and lifted the camera.

Emilia turned slightly.

Adrian’s head snapped toward Courtney. His entire expression changed.

"If you try something stupid," he growled, "I promise you’ll die by my hands this time."

Emilia’s eyes widened.

She slowly turned toward him. She had never heard him speak like that. Not to her. Not around her. Not with that kind of coldness.

Adrian didn’t even seem aware of her reaction. His attention remained fixed on Courtney.

Courtney stared at him. Then, slowly, she smiled. She lowered the phone. "Fine." She sassed.

Adrian’s jaw tightened. "Get out."

His voice was no longer controlled. There was no warmth or patience in it. No room for negotiation.

Courtney swallowed. For the first time, some of the confidence disappeared from her face. She bent down and picked up her coat and handbag.

She slipped her arms into the coat slowly.

Emilia watched her without saying anything.

Courtney adjusted the sleeve, then she looked at Emilia. A strange smile touched her lips.

It wasn’t friendly, or apologetic. It looked almost pitying.

She walked toward the door.

Adrian immediately stepped closer to Emilia and placed both hands on her shoulders, gently moving her away from the broken glass.

Courtney stopped beside them.

She looked at Adrian, then at Emilia.

"You should be careful."

Adrian’s eyes hardened. "Keep walking."

Courtney ignored him. "He’ll get into your head."

Emilia’s expression changed.

Courtney continued. "He’ll make you depend on him."

"Courtney."

"And then he’ll leave." Her eyes remained fixed on Emilia. "So when he does, don’t be surprised."

Emilia’s jaw tightened.

Adrian stepped between them. "Enough."

Courtney smiled faintly. "I’m just warning her." Her gaze shifted to Emilia again. "I’m trying to save her. Also, he left me to die."

Adrian opened the door. "Get out."

Courtney finally stepped through. Before disappearing, she looked back one last time.

"Good luck, Emilia."

He shut the door.

Adrian remained with his hand on the handle for several seconds. Then he turned towards Emilia.

Emilia was standing several feet away. Her eyes were fixed on the shattered bottle. She wouldn’t look at him.

"Emilia.".

He took a step toward her.

She stepped away.

Adrian stopped. "Look at me."

She didn’t.

Her arms folded slowly across her chest.

"Emilia."

Still he got nothing.

He took another step. "Please."

She finally spoke. "Did you use the bottle on her?"

Adrian’s expression changed. "What?"

Her voice shook slightly. "The bottle." She pointed toward the broken glass. "Did you use it on her?"

"No."

The answer came immediately.

"I didn’t touch her with it."

Emilia nodded slowly. She still wouldn’t meet his eyes.

"She threw it." Adrian’s voice softened. "She threw it at me."

Emilia swallowed. "I see."

Adrian watched her carefully.

He noticed the slight tremble in her fingers. And suddenly, he understood. She wasn’t angry because Courtney had been there. She was frightened by what she had seen.

Emilia looked toward the floor. "You were holding her harshly."

Adrian remained silent.

"Behind her."

"She was trying to attack me."

"She looked terrified."

Adrian ran a hand through his hair. "She was out of control."

Emilia finally looked at him. Her eyes were glossy. "You were holding her like she was a criminal."

Adrian frowned. "She was."

Emilia’s expression fell.

He immediately regretted the bluntness. "That isn’t what I meant."

"But that’s what you said."

"She threw a bottle at me." Adrian stared at her.

Emilia’s voice became quieter. "I’ve never seen you do that."

He said nothing.

She searcged gis eyes slowly. "I’ve never seen you look at someone like that."

"Emilia—"

"And then you threatened to kill her."

Adrian’s jaw tightened. "She was threatening you."

Emilia blinked, taken aback. "She wasn’t holding a weapon."

"She had a phone."

"That isn’t a weapon!" She half yelled, trying to hold back.

"It could have been used to record you."

Emilia stared at him. "Record what?" she went on. "What recording could she had taken that would equal her life being threatened like that of an ant?

He didn’t answer.

She looked away.

Adrian took another step.

She remained still this time. "You weren’t gentle with her."

His brows drew together. "She wasn’t being gentle with me."

"I understand that."

"Do you?"

"Yes." Her eyes dropped again. "But that’s not what I’m talking about."

Adrian waited.

Emilia’s fingers twisted together."I know you didn’t invite her. But I still don’t like what I saw."

Adrian’s expression softened. "What did you see?" he asked, trying to understand where she was going.

She looked at him. "You."

He remained silent.

"Holding a woman’s arms behind her back." Her voice softened. "Yelling into her ear." She swallowed. "Threatening her."

Adrian’s jaw flexed. "You don’t know Courtney."

"That doesn’t make it better."

He looked at her for a long moment. "Courtney isn’t someone you should judge from five minutes."

"I’m not judging her."

"Then what are you doing?"

"Trying to understand."

Adrian moved closer. "She is dangerous."

Emilia’s eyes flickered. She raised her chin at him. "So was she always like this?"

He didn’t answer immediately.

"Adrian."

"She wasn’t always."

Emilia waited.

He sighed quietly. "We were involved years ago."

"I know thus part."

"Then you know the arrangement ended."

"Yes."

"She didn’t accept it."

Emilia looked toward the door Courtney had disappeared through. "She said you left her to die."

Adrian’s face hardened. "That isn’t what happened."

"What did happen?"

"It’s complicated."

"Everything with you is complicated." she rolled her eyes in frustration. "I don’t want to fight with you," she whispered.

"We’re not fighting."

"It feels like it."

Adrian stepped closer. "I don’t want you frightened of me."

Emilia’s eyes immediately lowered. "I wasn’t frightened of you before."

Adrian blinked. "Before?"

She nodded. "Before today."

Adrian’s face fell slightly. "Emilia."

She shook her head. "I know you’re not going to hurt me."

He watched her.

"I know that."

He could hear the ’but’ she hasn’t yet voi ed out, so he forced it out of her lips. "But?"

She looked at him. "But today I saw something I wasn’t prepared to see."

He didn’t respond.

She wiped quickly beneath one eye. "I don’t like violence."

Adrian’s throat tightened. He looked down.

Emilia turned toward the door.

"Where are you going?"

"I need some air."

"Emilia—"

She cut him off. "I don’t want to argue."

She reached for the handle.

Adrian moved closer. "Please don’t leave like this."

She stopped. Her hand remained on the handle. She had never heard him plead this genuinely. Her heart softened, but it didn’t soften her resolve.

She didn’t turn around.

"Today it’s her."

Adrian’s expression changed.

Emilia continued quietly. "Tomorrow, it might be me."

His eyes hardened. "No."

She finally turned. "You can’t promise that."

"I can."

"You can’t."

"I would never—"

"You don’t know that."

"I know myself."

"So did she." Emilia deadpanned.

Adrian went still.

Emilia immediately regretted the words. But she couldn’t take them back. She looked at him, her eyes wet.

"I don’t want to be afraid of you, Adrian." She opened the door. "But right now, I need to leave."

Adrian didn’t stop her.

He could have. He could have explained everything. He could have told her what Courtney had done.

He could have told her about the years of manipulation, the arrangement, the betrayal, and the danger.

However, none of those explanations would change what Emilia had seen. So he stood there, watching her leave.

Emilia stepped into the hallway.

She paused for a second, and looked back.

Their eyes met, then Emilia turned away.

The door closed softly behind her. Adrian remained completely still. His eyes stayed on the door.
