Days Later:

For the first time since arriving on campus, Emilia found herself walking back to the residence hall without feeling as though every pair of eyes was watching her.

Maybe she was finally beginning to belong.

Lucy had spent lunch introducing her to three people whose names Emilia had already forgotten.

Rowan had voluntarily asked whether she’d wanted coffee after class. Even Noah had somehow managed to leave her alone for almost four hours.

That alone felt like a miracle.

She climbed the stairs to the third floor, balancing two books against her hip while fishing her room key from her pocket.

The corridor was unusually quiet. Most students were still in afternoon lectures. She unlocked the door and stepped inside.

The room was empty.

Rowan’s bed was neatly made, and her desk immaculate as always.

Emilia smiled. "Finally..."

She kicked off her shoes and let herself fall backwards onto her bed.

Beautiful, glorious silence.

She closed her eyes. The silence lasted exactly thirty-seven seconds until she heard an abrupt knock.

Her eyes flew open.

She heard another knock on her door. Louder this time. She groaned into her pillow.

"If that’s Lucy, I’m pretending to be dead."

The knocking continued.

Reluctantly, she climbed off the bed and crossed the room. The moment she opened the door, every trace of peace vanished.

Noah.

He leaned casually against the frame like he had every right to be there.

"You’ve started answering the door again."

Emilia immediately began pushing it shut. "Get out."

His foot slid into the gap before the door could close. "Emilia."

"I said get out."

"We need to talk."

"We’ve talked."

"No, you’ve been shouting."

She stared at him. "You’ve mistaken me defending myself for shouting."

His expression tightened. "I’m not leaving until you hear me out."

"I don’t remember inviting you."

"You don’t have to."

Before she could stop him, he pushed against the door.

Emilia stumbled backwards as he forced himself inside. Her jaw clenched. "You really need to stop doing that. This isn’t your room."

He closed the door behind himself. "I’m your boyfriend."

"My ex-boyfriend." She corrected him.

He smiled. "We’ve already established that I don’t agree with that."

Emilia laughed. It was so unexpected that Noah frowned.

"What?"

"I’m just trying to imagine saying something that delusional with a straight face."

"I’m serious."

She folded her arms. "So am I."

Noah looked around the room. "So this is where you’ve been hiding."

She leaned against the desk.

His jaw flexed. "I miss you." He told her.

"I don’t."

He exhaled slowly. "This isn’t you." He frowned. "I need a thousand dollars, but I’ll ask properly after you accept that I’m your boyfriend."

She smiled without humour. She shook her head. "I don’t have a thousand dollars to give to a cheat."

"I liked the old Emilia."

"The one who forgave everything?"

"I never said that."

"You didn’t have to."

"I need the money urgently." Noah took another step. "I know Kylie has been filling your head with—"

"Don’t."

He stopped.

"Don’t bring Kylie into this. I warned you."

His mouth tightened. "You’ve become cruel." He looked genuinely offended. "I’ve always respected you."

She raised one eyebrow. "You respected me so much you cheated on me."

"I made one mistake."

She sighed dramatically. "We’re really back here again?"

"I’m trying to save us."

"There is no us."

"There is."

"Noah..." She rubbed her forehead. "I’ve been thinking."

His face brightened slightly.

She looked at him curiously. "I actually have a question."

He nodded readily. "Ask me anything."

She tilted her head.

It was the same thoughtful expression she’d wear whenever she was genuinely trying to solve a difficult problem.

She paused. "How were you even able to cheat..."

He blinked.

"...being so unbelievably unsatisfying in bed?"

Noah simply stared at her in silence.

Emilia looked genuinely puzzled. "I’m serious."

His lips parted. "You..."

She continued before he could recover. "I’ve been thinking about it all week." She frowned thoughtfully. "You were just... going around showcasing your bad skills?"

His entire face froze.

"I mean..." she shrugged. "That takes confidence."

He still couldn’t speak.

"You cheated." She nodded slowly. "With those abilities." She chuckled. "That’s actually impressive."

Noah finally found his voice. "What the hell did you just say?"

Emilia looked him up and down. "I’m just curious."

She spread her hands. "I spent three years thinking you were simply a little disappointing in bed."

She smiled politely. "Turns out you were disappointing on a national level."

His face darkened.

She wasn’t finished. "Did she enjoy herself?"

His jaw clenched.

"Or did she also go home wondering what all the fuss was about?"

He took one step forward. "Don’t."

She held up one finger. "I’m not judging." She smiled sweetly. "I’m fascinated. You’ve got enough confidence to cheat..." She looked genuinely impressed. "...without enough talent to justify it."

His breathing changed.

"You know what I think?"

His fists clenched at his sides.

"Emilia."

She shrugged. "I’ve had supermarket yoghurt that lasted longer than you ever had."

His voice dropped dangerously low, and his face fell. "Enough."

Emilia looked directly into his eyes. She smiled sweetly. "Now we’re even."

His face twisted with anger.

For the first time since she’d known him, she watched the calm mask begin to crack. Noah couldn’t believe she’d actually said it.

His face hardened. "You think you’re clever?"

Emilia shrugged. "I think I asked a reasonable question."

His jaw flexed. "So that’s what this is?"

"What?" She raised a brow at him.

"You slept with another man because you weren’t satisfied."

She frowned.

"You’re trying to justify it."

"I’m not trying to justify anything." She tilted her head. "Unlike you."

"I wasn’t enough for you."

"You weren’t faithful."

"Answer the question!" he snapped.

Her brows lifted.

His breathing became heavier.

"You couldn’t wait, could you?" he asked bitterly. "The second we had one fight, you jumped into another man’s bed."

"We didn’t have one fight." She crossed her arms on her chest. "We ended."

"No." He pointed at her. "You decided that."

"I informed you."

His laugh returned, harsher this time. "So that’s your excuse?"

"There doesn’t need to be an excuse."

"There does!" His voice echoed around the room. "People don’t just sleep with strangers overnight."

Emilia looked at him without blinking. "I did."

His nostrils flared. "You did it to hurt me, you bitch."

"I didn’t even think about you."

For a heartbeat, Noah looked genuinely winded. Then his expression twisted.

"You wanted to make me jealous."

"I wanted to forget you."

"No!" His voice boomed through the room. "You wanted me to suffer."

Emilia sighed. She slowly remembered she had been dealing with a manchild.

"You really think everything is about you."

He stared at her.

She continued calmly. "The world didn’t stop because you cheated, Noah."

His eyes widened slightly. His lips curled. "You’ve become disgusting."

She smiled. "I was just thinking the same thing."

Noah’s fists clenched. "You’ve become Kylie."

Emilia rolled her eyes. "You really are obsessed with my best friend."

He scoffed. "She hates men."

Emilia corrected quietly. "She hates bad men."

His expression darkened. "You think she’s a good influence?" He breathed harshly. "She’s filling your head with rubbish."

"I’ve become difficult to manipulate."

The words struck him squarely. His entire body stiffened. "What did you say?"

"You heard me."

"I’m manipulating you?"

"You’ve certainly been trying."

"I’ve spent weeks apologising!"

"You’ve spent a week explaining why cheating wasn’t cheating."

His voice rose again. "I MADE ONE MISTAKE!"

"And somehow," Emilia replied evenly, "every sentence after that has been my fault."

He threw both hands into the air. "Because you won’t let me fix it!"

"There is nothing left to fix."

He suddenly crossed the distance between them quickly. Before Emilia could react, his hand shot forward.

His fingers clamped around her jaw.

Pain shot through her face. "You don’t get to disrespect me." His voice had changed.

Gone was the patient tone, and the pleading boyfriend. This voice was sharp, cold, and demanding.

Emilia’s heart lurched.

She shoved against his chest. "Don’t touch me."

He didn’t let go immediately. Instead, his grip tightened for a brief second before releasing her.

She stumbled backward. Her hand instinctively went to her jaw. It already hurt.

Noah stared at her. His own breathing sounded uneven now.

"I didn’t mean—"

She backed away again, and he followed her. Her lower back struck the edge of the desk. There was nowhere else to go.

Noah noticed, and his shoulders relaxed slightly as though he’d finally cornered the conversation.

"You’ll apologise now." He ordered her.

She laughed once. "I think you’re confusing me with the woman you used to date."

His expression snapped. His arm lifted, and then, his hand hung in the air between them.

Emilia couldn’t tell what he intended.

Grab her again?

Force her to look at him? Strike her? She didn’t know. She only knew one thing. She flinched.

The movement happened before she could stop herself.

Her shoulders drew inward, and her eyes squeezed shut for the smallest fraction of a second.

At that moment, the dormitory door slammed open so violently it bounced against the wall.

"What the—" Kylie’s voice died instantly.

Her eyes swept across the room, and landed on Noah standing inches away from Emilia with Emilia trapped against the desk.

His hand was suspended in the air, barely a breath from her face.

Time stopped..

Kylie looked from Noah’s raised hand, to Emilia’s frightened expression and then to the red marks already forming along Emilia’s jaw.

Pure cold terrifying rage filled her expression. She quietly placed the paper bag she’d been carrying onto the floor.

Then she took one deliberate step into the room. Her blue eyes never left Noah.

"Take one more step toward her," she said, her voice frighteningly calm, "and I’ll show you what a real mistake looks like."
