"Take one more step toward her," Kylie said quietly, "and I’ll show you what a real mistake looks like."
The room went still.
Noah slowly lowered his hand.
His eyes shifted from Emilia to Kylie. For the first time since forcing his way into the room, uncertainty crossed his face.
Kylie stepped inside and nudged the door shut behind her with her foot. The sound echoed through the room.
Noah straightened instinctively.
He had always been taller than Emilia. Standing over her had never been difficult. However, standing in front of Kylie was different.
She was several inches taller than he was, and carried herself with the quiet confidence of someone who had never needed to prove she could win a fight.
She looked him directly in the eye.
"Move."
Noah tried to recover. "This doesn’t concern—"
"Move." She commanded.
He hesitated.
Then, against his own pride, he took half a step sideways. Kylie walked past him without another glance.
She stopped in front of Emilia. The redness on Emilia’s jaw had darkened. Her thumb brushed the mark gently.
Emilia flinched.
Kylie’s expression didn’t change. "What happened?"
"I’m okay."
Her voice softened. "What happened?"
Emilia swallowed. "He grabbed me."
Kylie looked at the fingerprints again. Rage flickered in her eyes. Without another word, she wrapped both arms around Emilia.
She hugged her softly.
Emilia hadn’t realised how tightly she’d been holding herself together until that moment. The instant Kylie hugged her, every muscle in her body relaxed.
Her knees almost gave out.
She buried her face against Kylie’s shoulder.
"I’m sorry," she whispered.
Kylie frowned. She pulled back just enough to look at her. "Listen to me." Her voice was gentle now. "You never apologise because somebody else decided to be cruel."
Emilia nodded weakly.
Behind them, Noah cleared his throat.
"I think that’s enough."
Kylie turned to him. She crossed the distance between them before he realised she was moving, and smacked him hard across his face.
The back of her hand connected sharply with his face, and his head jerked sideways.
The sound cracked through the room.
Noah stumbled half a step before catching himself. His eyes widened. "You—"
"I’ve been wanting to do that," Kylie said calmly.
Noah touched his cheek. "You assaulted me."
"You assaulted my best friend."
He took one step toward her.
Kylie didn’t move. She simply reach into her handbag, pulled out her phone, unlocked it, and tapped three numbers.
Her thumb hovered over the green call button.
She held the screen up where he could see it. "Take another step."
Noah stared at the phone. "You wouldn’t."
"I didn’t come here to argue." Her thumb lowered another fraction. "I came here with lunch."
She glanced briefly at the paper bag she’d left by the door. "Instead, I found you cornering a woman after forcing your way into her room."
Silence.
"So here’s what’s going to happen." She paused lightly. "You are going to leave."
Noah folded his arms. "You can’t threaten me."
"I’m not threatening you." Her thumb settled directly over the call button. "I’m deciding whether campus security arrives first..." She smiled. "...or the police."
His jaw tightened. "You’d ruin my future over this?" He turned to Emilia. "Emilia, tell her."
Kylie smiled softly. "You nearly ruined hers."
Noah looked at Emilia. She didn’t rescue him, or even speak. She simply looked tired.
His shoulders dropped. "This isn’t over."
"It is," Emilia answered quietly.
He searched her face. Whatever hope he’d walked into the room with wasn’t there anymore.
After another second, he opened the door, and he left without another word. The door clicked shut behind him.
Kylie didn’t move. She walked over calmly, locked the door, and checked the handle twice. Only then did she finally exhale.
"Idiot."
Emilia let out a shaky laugh. "I was thinking worse."
They stayed quiet for a while. After a moment, Kylie walked over and gently tilted Emilia’s chin.
"The bruise is going to show."
"I’m fine."
"I know." She smiled sadly. "But I’m still buying you ice cream."
"You think ice cream fixes everything." Emilia’s face brightened.
"It just makes dealing with everything easier."
Emilia smiled. "Thank you."
Kylie rolled her eyes. "I’ve told you before. You don’t thank me for doing best-friend things."
Another comfortable silence settled between them. Then Kylie suddenly slapped her own forehead.
"Oh!"
Emilia frowned. "What?"
"I completely forgot why I came."
"You came because you almost committed murder."
"I came before that." She reached down and picked up the paper bag she’d abandoned near the door. "I brought sandwiches."
Emilia laughed. "And..."
Kylie reached into her jacket pocket.
She pulled out a folded reservation card, and a huge grin spread across her face.
"I made reservations."
"For what?"
"My birthday."
Emilia blinked. "Already?"
Kylie nodded, raising a brow at Emilia. "My birthday is tomorrow."
"I know that." Emilia matched Kylie’s raised brows. "I haven’t gotten you a gift."
"So..." Kylie cut her off softly, and wiggled the card dramatically. "I booked us dinner." She pointed proudly at the elegant gold lettering printed across the reservation.
"The Glass Orchid."
Emilia’s eyes widened. "Kylie..."
"Don’t ask how much it cost."
"How much did it—"
"I said don’t ask."
Emilia laughed. "You called your dad again, didn’t you?"
Kylie looked away. "Maybe."
"You absolutely did." Emilia accused playfully.
"He owes me emotional compensation."
Emilia shook her head, still smiling.
"So tomorrow night..." Kylie linked their arms together. "...you are officially forbidden from thinking about Noah."
Kylie wagged a finger. "I mean completely. No ex-boyfriends. No professors. No studying. No crying."
She smiled mischievously. "For one evening, we’re just two girls celebrating my birthday."
Emilia looked at her friend.
For the first time that day, the knot in her chest loosened.
"I’d like that."
Kylie beamed. "Excellent."
