The reservation card landed squarely in the middle of Emilia’s bed.

Kylie folded both arms with unmistakable satisfaction.

"Tomorrow night," she announced, "you belong to me."

Emilia looked up from the economics notes she’d been pretending to read. "That sounded far more threatening than you intended."

"It was supposed to."

Kylie walked to the wardrobe and pulled both doors open. Just incase Emtoom’s room mate would come in soon.

"And that means," Kylie continued, already pulling dresses off their hangers without permission, "you are not wearing anything that says, ’Hello, I’m here to discuss quarterly financial reports.’"

Emilia laughed. "I don’t own anything like that."

"You absolutely do."

A cream cardigan landed on the bed.

"So?"

"So," Kylie declared dramatically, pointing at it, "that cardigan has paid taxes."

Kylie frowned staring at the dresses. "You own the most responsible wardrobe I’ve ever seen."

"I like being comfortable."

Kylie smacked her lips together mischiviously. "I like people having heart attacks."

She finally pulled out a black dress and held it against Emilia. "There."

Emilia looked at it.

It wasn’t revealing, just elegant, and simple. It reached her knees and hugged her waist without trying too hard.

"I like this one." Kylie tossed it onto the bed. "Now..." She pointed directly at Emilia. "...try to look hot."

Emilia raised one eyebrow.

"I don’t normally look hot?"

Kylie froze. "No." She immediately slapped both hands over her mouth. "No, no, no."

Emilia folded her arms.

"I mean..." Kylie waved both hands frantically. "I mean look really hot." She groaned dramatically. "I am making this worse."

"You really are."

"I meant..." Kylie sighed. "You already look beautiful."

Emilia smiled. "I just want tommorow night to be different." Her voice softened. "I want you to walk into that restaurant remembering you’re twenty. Not someone’s ex."

The teasing disappeared from Emilia’s face. She walked over and hugged Kylie. "Happy birthday."

Kylie hugged her back. "You’ll make me emotional."

"You?"

"I cry once."

...

The next evening....

The city glittered beneath thousands of lights. Their dinner lasted almost two hours.

Kylie laughed until she nearly spilled her drink.

Lucy had somehow convinced the waiter it was Kylie’s twenty-first birthday three separate times just to earn three different complimentary desserts.

Even Rowan, who had reluctantly agreed to come after insisting she hated birthday dinners, smiled more than Emilia had expected.

For a little while, life felt uncomplicated for Emilia. When they stepped out of the restaurant, Kylie clapped once.

"Now," she announced energetically. "The real birthday begins."

Lucy grinned. Her eyes widened with a gleam. "Oh, we’re clubbing."

Rowan sighed. "I knew this was coming." She turned to Emilia. "I’m sorry, but I don’t club. I’ll be going back to the dorm."

"Oh, that’s fine," Lucy smiled warmly at her, and pulled her into a friendly hug before she could refuse it.

Kylie and Emilia nodded at her. All three stood by, and watched her get into a taxi. Then, they all waved at her excitedly until she disappeared.

"So..." Kylie turned to Lucy and Emilia. "It’s just us three." She squealed.

Lucy nodded in expectations.

Emilia said nothing. She simply smiled softly and tagged along, as Kylie called a uber, and took them away from the restaurant to the location of the club.

Music pulsed through the rooftop lounge, vibrating gently beneath Emilia’s heels. The place overlooked the city skyline.

Golden lights stretched endlessly beyond the glass railings.

People laughed, and cocktails sparkled beneath hanging lights. Someone somewhere was celebrating something.

Kylie disappeared almost immediately. "I’ll be back."

"You always say that," Emilia called after her.

"And I’m always right."

She vanished into the crowd, and Lucy followed behind her, smiling and ready for adventures as she matched Kylie’s energy.

Emilia smiled to herself.

After twenty minutes, the music became louder, and the room became warmer. She slipped quietly toward the balcony.

The night air greeted her instantly. It felt so cold and comforting as she rested both hands against the railing.

The city stretched below like a sea of stars.

She closed her eyes, and breathed.

Then, a faint glow appeared beside her.

She opened her eyes, and saw someone standing several feet away, leaning against the opposite end of the balcony.

He wore dark trousers, and a sky blue shirt. The sleeves were rolled neatly to his forearms. His suit jacket had been abandoned somewhere inside.

A cigarette rested between his fingers. She recognised him in a heartbeat.

Professor Adrian Ashford.

Her breath caught.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

He looked out across the skyline before finally turning his head. Recognition settled quietly in his eyes.

He lifted the cigarette slightly. "Couldn’t think inside either?" His voice was calmer than she remembered.

Emilia blinked. "I wasn’t trying to."

A corner of his mouth lifted.

Silence settled between them again.

He took one slow drag before extending the cigarette toward her without a word.

It was an unspoken offer.

Emilia looked at it, then at him. She gave a tiny shake of her head. "No, thank you."

He shrugged easily, as though he’d expected the answer. "Probably for the best."

He brought it back to his own lips, and the smoke drifted upward into the cool night. The music from inside became little more than a distant heartbeat.

The city carried the rest.

Finally, Emilia found her voice. "I didn’t expect to see you here." She said softly.

His gaze remained on the skyline. "I could say the same."

She studied him.

He looked completely different outside Blackwood. Less like a professor. And more like the man she’d met on that rainy night.

Yet somehow, even more difficult to read.

A breeze stirred between them.

She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

"So..." she said quietly. "Are we pretending we don’t know each other again?"

This time, he looked directly at her. The night air wrapped around them in cool silence.

Adrian stood beneath the amber glow of a streetlamp, the cigarette balanced lazily between two fingers. Smoke drifted upward, disappearing into the darkness.

Emilia stopped several feet away.

Her heartbeat refused to cooperate.

He looked at her.

Her eyes betrayed her as they drifted to his mouth. Only for a second and when she looked back up, she realised that he had noticed.

Heat rushed into her cheeks.

She quickly looked away.

A quiet chuckle escaped him. He sounded almost amused.

Her pride immediately flared. "What?"

"Nothing."

She narrowed her eyes, embarrassed. "You’re smiling."

"Barely."

She folded her arms. She could hear the smile in his voice. "I preferred it when you ignored me." She joked.

His gaze lingered on her. "I was."

She blinked. "You call looking at me every lecture ignoring me?"

"I never looked at you."

She let out a disbelieving laugh. "Liar."

He chuckled, and took in another drag. His eyes never left hers. "No one noticed." He finally agreed.

Her breath caught.

That single sentence landed harder than an entire conversation ever could.

He had looked. He’d simply hidden it better than she had.

The silence stretched again. This time, heavy and electric. His cigarette burned lower. He glanced down at it.

"Fuck it." He murmured, and then he dropped it onto the pavement.

The ember scattered. His shoe crushed it out.

When Emilia looked back up, he was already standing directly in front of her. Close enough that she caught the scent of cedar and expensive cologne.

Her breath hitched.

His hand settled lightly against her waist. He waited, taking a second to pull her. Giving her every chance to move.

She didn’t.

Instead, both palms rested instinctively against his chest. Her pulse raced beneath her skin.

"What if someone sees us?" she whispered.

His eyes flicked briefly toward the club behind her, then back. "Let me worry about that."

His voice was barely above a murmur.

The distance between them disappeared, and her lips parted. She looked at his mouth again.

This time, she didn’t even realize she’d done it. His thumb shifted slightly against her waist.

"Emilia." Her name rolled out of his lips.

She looked back into his eyes. She wanted to hear him say her name again. "I want to have sex with you again." She shamelessly admitted.

He chuckled. "Likewise."

Everything around them faded. There was only him. Slowly, he leaned in. And this time, she met him halfway.
