"Noah."

Emilia’s voice came out barely above a whisper. Her pulse hammered against her ribs. The look on his face made her uneasy.

"What are you doing on my bed?"

Noah didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he looked at the clock mounted above Rowan’s desk.

"Forty-three minutes."

She frowned. "What?"

"Forty-three minutes." His gaze slowly settled on her. "That’s how long you’ve been in Professor Ashford’s office."

A knot tightened painfully in her stomach.

"I don’t know what you’re talking about."

His jaw flexed. "Are you fucking your professor?" He questioned ruthlessly.

The words crashed into her like ice water.

Every trace of color drained from her face. For a second, she couldn’t breathe. "Noah?"

"You heard me."

"Noah..."

"What the hell were you doing in there for forty-three minutes?"

Emilia stared at him in complete disbelief. "I don’t owe you an explanation."

His expression darkened. "You won’t speak?"

"No." She took a steadying breath. "You walked into my room without permission."

"Our room."

"It isn’t yours."

He laughed once, cold, and humorless. "This is the last chance I give to you to come back to your senses." His jaw thickened. "This is our room."

"It isn’t, Noah." She replied. "This my room."

The sentence had barely left her mouth before he crossed the room. He grabbed the strap of her handbag.

Emilia’s eyes widened.

"Noah!"

She tried to pull it back.

He yanked harder, and the bag slipped from her shoulder, hurting her in the process.

"What are you doing?"

He ignored her. His fingers worked frantically through the pockets of her bag, going through her pens, receipts, lip balm, and her notebook.

"What are you looking for?"

"Your phone."

She lunged toward him. "Give me my bag!"

He shoved her back with one arm.

She stumbled into the edge of Rowan’s desk.

"Noah, stop!"

He unzipped another compartment, and her phone appeared. He snatched it.

"Password." He commanded her.

"Go to hell." She cursed him.

He looked at her.

"I said go to hell." She snarled at him.

His eyes narrowed. He quit arguing, and resumed searching the bag again. As he searched through another pocket, something slid free.

A thick white envelope.

It landed on the floor between them.

Neither of them moved at first, and silence swallowed the room. Noah’s eyes slowly dropped, and so did Emilia’s.

Her heart stopped. She swallowed.

It was the envelope.

Noah bent first. His fingers closed around it.

Emilia stepped forward instinctively. "Give it back."

He didn’t.

Instead, he opened it. The crisp edges of American hundred-dollar bills peeked through. His breathing changed.

His face was drained of color instantly. Then something else replaced the shock. Greed. Raw and ugly greed.

His eyes flicked back to Emilia. "Who gave you this?"

She held out her hand. "It’s none of your business."

"I’m your boyfriend."

"You’re my ex."

His jaw tightened. "I didn’t give you twenty thousand dollars."

"Like you ever can."

"So who did?"

She stepped closer. "Give me my money."

He held the envelope above his head. "Answer me."

"I don’t have to."

His eyes widened with disgust. "You sold yourself." He spat.

She froze. "What?"

"You heard me." His voice rose. "You sold yourself to your professor." He accused her without hesitation.

Emilia felt something inside her snap. She reached for the envelope. "I said give it back, you bastard."

The slap came without warning.

The back of his hand struck her across the face really hard with hate. Pain exploded through her cheek.

She stumbled sideways, and her shoulder slammed into the floor.

For a heartbeat, the room spun.

"You lying slut!" He cursed, and his voice echoed through the room. He waved the envelope in the air. "You slept with him for money!"

Emilia slowly lifted a trembling hand to her burning cheek.

She looked at him, then she stood straight.

Without saying a word, she slapped him back really hard. The sound cracked through the room.

Noah’s head turned with the impact.

Several long seconds of silence passed between them. He looked back at her with shock, and then his face no longer looked human, only rage.

"You—"

He lunged.

His hand clamped around her throat.

Emilia gasped.

He drove her backward. Her back slammed against the wall so hard the picture frame above Rowan’s desk rattled.

Pain shot through her spine.

"You think you’re better than me now?" His fingers tightened. "I asked you for a thousand dollars a few days ago!"

His voice shook with fury. "You said you didn’t have it!" He shoved the envelope toward her face. "But somehow you’ve got twenty thousand?"

His grip tightened again. "Did you spread your legs for your professor?"

Emilia clawed at his wrist. Her breathing became shallow.

"Stop..." She forced the words out. "...assuming..."

His face twisted.

"...that..." She met his eyes with every ounce of strength she had left. "...this money..."

She coughed forcefully. "...came from my professor..."

"You—"

The bedroom door burst open.

"What the hell!"

Rowan didn’t hesitate.

She grabbed the heavy metal water bottle from her desk and swung it to his head with everything she had.

It struck Noah across the back of the head.

His grip released instantly.

Emilia collapsed to her knees, coughing violently as air rushed back into her lungs.

"You psycho!" Rowan shoved Noah backward.

He staggered.

She was already pulling out her phone in the very next second.

"I’ve called security!" she shouted. "They’re on their way!"

Noah looked between the two women, rage and panic battling across his face. The sound of hurried footsteps echoed from somewhere out in the corridor.

"Ask that bitch what she did." Noah yelled at Rowan, referring to Emilia. "She slept with her professor for money."

Noah turned to her with rage. "You lying slut. I saw how he looked at you." Fury swallowed him. "You’re cheating on me for money?"

"Noah!" Emilia’s voice cracked, equal parts disbelief and fury. "You don’t have the right to stand there and accuse me of anything."

Rowan moved immediately, placing herself between them. "Stay away from her."

Noah laughed bitterly, rubbing the back of his head where the bottle had struck him.

"You actually believe her?"

"I don’t have to," Rowan shot back. "I just watched you assault her."

His eyes flicked toward Emilia again. "You bitch."

"I’m Emilia, not a bitch," Emilia corrected, her voice hoarse from where he’d gripped her throat. She slowly pushed herself to her feet, one hand instinctively rubbing her neck. "There’s a difference."

He scoffed. "So now you’re acting innocent?"

"I don’t need to act."

"You disappeared into a professor’s office for forty-three minutes!"

"So what?" Emilia snapped. "So what if I did?"

"You think people won’t talk?"

"The only person talking is you."

Noah tightened his grip on the envelope. "You expect me to believe he just handed you twenty thousand dollars?"

"I don’t expect you to believe anything."

"Then tell me where it came from!"

"It’s none of your business."

"I’m your—"

"My ex." She cut him off sharply. "You became my ex the day I realized loving you meant destroying myself."

His expression hardened. "You still belong to me."

"Stup up, you bloody fool." Her answer was immediate, and firm. "I never did."

Something dangerous flashed across his face.

"I already regret wasting years on you."

Heavy footsteps thundered down the corridor.

A loud knock shook the door.

"Campus Security!" Another knock. "Open the door immediately!"

Noah’s eyes widened.

Rowan didn’t hesitate. She rushed over and unlocked the door.

Two campus security officers stepped inside.

Their expressions changed the instant they saw Emilia.

Her hair was disheveled, and a vivid red mark spread across her cheek. Finger-shaped bruises were already beginning to darken around her throat.

One officer looked from Emilia to Noah.

"What happened here?"

Before Noah could answer, Rowan pointed directly at him.

"He attacked her."

The room fell silent.

Noah immediately shook his head. "She’s lying."

"No," Rowan said coldly. "I watched him."

The second officer turned toward Emilia. "Miss... are you hurt?"

Emilia swallowed against the ache in her throat.

She looked at Noah. He looked afraid. She took a slow breath.

Then, without taking her eyes off him, she answered. "Yes."

The officer’s expression hardened.

"Sir." He stepped toward Noah. "I’m going to need you to come with us."

Noah’s face drained of color.

"If I can’t have you, nobody will." he hissed, glaring at Emilia.

She met his gaze steadily.

The officer reached for Noah’s arm. As Noah was pulled toward the door, his grip finally loosened.

The white envelope slipped from his fingers.

It landed on the floor at Emilia’s feet.
