The rest of the afternoon disappeared into a blur.

There were a lot of questions, statements, and names.

The tiny security office smelled faintly of coffee and old paper as Emilia answered the same questions over and over again.

"Did he threaten you before today?"

"Has he ever been violent?"

"Would you like to file a formal complaint?"

Each answer felt heavier than the last.

By the time everything was over, exhaustion had settled into her bones.

Rowan refused to leave her side.

Lucy arrived halfway through after hearing whispers spreading across campus. One look at the bruises around Emilia’s neck was enough to make her eyes fill with tears.

"I swear," Lucy muttered, "if security hadn’t gotten there first..."

Rowan squeezed Emilia’s shoulder gently. "He’s gone." She said dryly, but one couldn’t mistake the care beneath her tone.

Emilia nodded.

....

Just after seven in the evening, another knock sounded on the dorm room door.

Lucy opened it.

"Kylie!"

The blonde rushed inside without waiting to be invited.

Her smile disappeared the instant she saw Emilia. "Oh, honey..."

She crossed the room in three quick steps before wrapping Emilia in the gentlest hug she could manage.

Emilia didn’t realize how badly she needed one until then.

For several seconds, she simply stood there, then she hugged Kylie back.

"I’m okay."

"Shuu," Kylie whispered. "Have you called your mum?"

Emilia laughed weakly. "I wouldn’t dare."

Rowan quietly excused herself to make tea while Lucy busied herself straightening the room, giving the two friends a little privacy.

Kylie carefully brushed a strand of hair away from Emilia’s face.

"He hit you."

Emilia nodded.

Kylie’s jaw tightened. "If I ever see him..."

"You’ll commit a crime?"

"I’ll commit several."

Despite everything, Emilia smiled.

"This isn’t funny, Emilia." Kylie murmured softly. "You should press charges."

The rest of the evening passed with Rowan glowing back to reading, and Lucy trying to lift the mood, while Kylie simply warmed Emilia up with her presence.

The evening settled quietly around Building C.

Rain tapped softly against the windows while the four girls talked about everything except Noah.

It helped.

For the first time since the attack, Emilia managed to breathe without feeling like something heavy sat on her chest.

Then, at exactly 9:02 p.m., her phone vibrated.

She stared at her phone, and saw the contact ID.

Adrian.

Her heartbeat skipped.

She unlocked the screen.

Adrian: Can you come outside?

Another message arrived almost immediately.

Adrian: I’m waiting.

Emilia stared at the words for several seconds.

"He knows," she whispered.

Kylie looked up immediately. "What?"

Emilia turned the phone around.

Kylie read the messages before looking back at her. "You’re going?"

Emilia nodded slowly.

"I think I should."

"I’m coming."

Emilia blinked. "Kylie..."

"I’m not asking."

A small smile escaped Emilia. "You don’t even know him."

She folded her arms. Kylie shrugged. "I’d like to meet him."

Lucy looked over from her desk. "You’re not going alone."

"I’m only meeting someone outside."

"And Kylie is going with you," Rowan added firmly. "No arguments."

Emilia looked around the room.

Three determined faces looked back at her.

"I’ve apparently lost the right to make decisions tonight." She murmured softly.

"Damn right," Kylie said.

Emilia rolled her eyes fondly before walking toward her wardrobe.

The night air would be cold.

She slipped on a soft cream cardigan over her clothes before checking the faint bruises on her neck in the mirror.

The collar hid most of them.

She picked up her phone.

"I’ll be back soon."

Lucy walked over and hugged her briefly. "If anything feels wrong..."

"I’ll come straight back."

Kylie was already waiting by the door. She jingled her keys playfully impatiently. "Come on."

Together, they stepped into the quiet corridor.

The door clicked shut behind them. Neither of them spoke as they descended the stairs.

The campus looked different at night. The pathways were lit by warm amber lamps, their glow softened by the light drizzle that had begun to fall.

Kylie walked beside Emilia in silence.

She didn’t ask questions.

She simply stayed close. As they stepped outside Building C, Emilia spotted him immediately.

Adrian stood tall several yards away beneath one of the old maple trees.

A black overcoat rested neatly over his shoulders, one hand tucked into his pocket while the other held an umbrella he clearly wasn’t using.

The moment he saw her, he started walking towards her. His pace was measured, and controlled. But there was something in his eyes she hadn’t seen before.

Worry.

Real worry.

Emilia slowed to a stop.

Kylie quietly squeezed her arm. "I’ll wait over there." She pointed toward another tree a short distance away. "If he annoys you, blink twice."

"I’ll remember." Emilia nodded, exhausted.

Kylie gave Adrian one long assessing look before walking away. This was her first time seeing him in person.

She remained close enough to intervene if she had to, and far enough to give them privacy.

Adrian stopped in front of Emilia.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

His eyes searched her face before settling on the faint bruises peeking above the collar of her cardigan.

His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. "I wish you’d called me." It wasn’t an accusation. It sounded more like disappointment.

Emilia folded her arms. "You found out anyway."

"I found out because the Dean contacted faculty this evening." His voice remained calm. "There was an incident involving a student."

He paused. "When I heard your name..."

He didn’t finish the sentence.

Emilia looked away. "I was fine."

"You weren’t." He refused.

Silence settled between them.

Finally, she sighed.

"What difference would calling you have made?"

His brows drew together. "I would have been there."

"You weren’t."

"I didn’t know."

"And whose fault is that?" She half snapped at him.

He stared at her. "You never told me."

Emilia frowned. "I wasn’t thinking about you!" She snapped, and the words came out louder than she intended.

Several students walking nearby glanced over before quickly continuing on.

"I was trying to breathe." Her chest rose unevenly. "I was trying to answer security’s questions.I was trying not to cry. I was trying to convince myself I was okay."

She laughed softly with a small sob. "So forgive me for not remembering to update you."

Adrian remained silent.

She hated that. She hated how calm he stayed. "You don’t get to look disappointed." She sniffed, holding back her tears.

"I’m not disappointed."

"Really?"

"No."

"What are you then?"

"Worried."

That single word stole the air from her lungs.

She looked away again. "I don’t need someone worrying about me, or trying to save me."

She shook her head. "I don’t need another man deciding what’s best for me."

She took a step backward.

"You don’t know what it’s like to slowly disappear because someone convinces you they’re all you’ll ever have."

Her voice trembled.

"You don’t know what it’s like to apologize every single day until you can’t even remember what you’re apologizing for."

She laughed quietly.

"You don’t know what it’s like to become scared of making someone angry because you’re already planning how you’ll calm them down."

Adrian’s expression never changed.

He simply listened.

"I finally got out." She swallowed hard. "And now..." Her voice cracked. "...now everyone wants something from me again."

He frowned. "I don’t want anything from you."

"You do." She pointed at herself. "You want me to trust you."

He didn’t answer.

She shook her head. "I can’t."

Another painful silence stretched between them.

"You barely know me."

"And you barely know me," he replied quietly.

"So stop acting like I owed you a phone call." She eyed him. "You came here because you expected me to tell you."

"I came here because I needed to see that you were alive."

She froze.

He took one slow step closer. "I wasn’t angry that you didn’t call." His voice had become almost impossibly soft. "I was terrified that you couldn’t."

Her eyes widened. She looked down.

"I don’t know how to let people care about me anymore." She confessed. "I have just my mum and Kylie and right now, they’re enough."

Adrian heard every word. "I know."

A faint smile touched his lips.

Emilia closed her eyes.

The anger she’d been holding onto all evening suddenly felt exhausting. "I’m sorry." She exhaled. "I said awful things."
