Emilia stood beneath the amber glow of the campus lamp, her cardigan pulled tightly around herself as a cool breeze stirred the leaves overhead.

For several moments, neither of them spoke again.

The anger that had spilled out of her only minutes ago had left behind something quieter. Exhaustion, and embarrassment.

She rubbed her fingers together absent-mindedly.

"I’m sorry," she murmured again.

Adrian looked at her.

She let out a small, humorless laugh. "I think I accused you of things that weren’t fair."

"You did."

She winced.

"But," he continued calmly, "I understood why."

She looked up.

"You weren’t arguing with me." He told her.

Her brows drew together.

"You were arguing with everything that happened before me."

She lowered her eyes. "I don’t like feeling..." She searched for the right word. "...fragile."

"You aren’t."

She smiled weakly. "I was crying five hours ago."

"Crying doesn’t make you fragile."

"It feels like it does."

"It doesn’t." His answer came so simply that she almost believed him.

Another breeze drifted through the trees, carrying the scent of rain-soaked earth.

Students crossed the campus in small groups farther down the path, laughing about something neither of them could hear.

Life continued.

Emilia tucked her hands into the sleeves of her cardigan. "I hate that you saw me like that, or even heard this. We’re supposed too be just sex partners."

"We’re still sex partners." He chuckled softly. "We need to look out for each other for a more enjoyable sex life."

She laughed softly through her nose. "You always know exactly what to say."

She studied him for a moment before shaking her head. "That’s somehow even more dangerous."

His mouth curved faintly. "I’ll take that as a compliment."

"You shouldn’t."

"I already have."

Despite herself, she smiled, and he immediately noticed.

"Thank you." He murmured, leaning forward.

She thinned her lips. "Why?"

"For my payment."

She blinked.

"My reward for accepting your bracelet."

Realization dawned on her. Her smile widened before she caught herself.

"That doesn’t count."

"It does."

"It was accidental."

He shrugged. "It still happened."

She rolled her eyes.

A quiet laugh escaped both of them. It was enough to dissolve what little tension remained between them.

Adrian slipped one hand into the pocket of his overcoat.

"Come."

She looked at him.

"I parked nearby."

Her brows lifted. "You drove?"

"I usually do."

She hesitated for only a second before nodding. "Okay."

He didn’t reach for her hand. He simply began walking at a pace slow enough for her to match without effort.

She appreciated that more than she could explain.

The two of them followed the stone pathway leading away from Building C. Behind them, Kylie remained beneath the maple tree.

She watched them disappear down the gently lit path before folding her arms. She walked miles behind them, and kept her eyes on Emilia.

The campus grew quieter the farther they walked.

The academic buildings disappeared behind them, replaced by the staff parking area.

Only a handful of vehicles remained, and most belonged to lecturers who had worked late.

Emilia’s attention wandered absent-mindedly over the rows of parked cars.

Then, she stopped walking. Her eyes landed on the sleek black coupe parked beneath a streetlamp.

Even in the dim light, it looked impossibly expensive.

Its polished body reflected the golden glow overhead like glass. The unmistakable illuminated grille gleamed softly.

At its center sat the iconic Spirit of Ecstasy.

Her mouth parted. "No." Her jaw dropped in shock when she realised Adrian kept walking confidently towards the car.

Adrian stopped beside her. "What?" He asked, genuine concerned.

She slowly pointed. "Is that yours?"

"It is."

She stared.

A Rolls-Royce Spectre.

She had seen photographs, and videos online, but never in real life. Certainly never belonging to someone she knew.

Her eyes travelled from the car to Adrian, then back again.

A long silence stretched between them.

"Really..." She looked directly into his eyes. "Who are you?"

Adrian looked at her for a long moment. Then, without answering, he reached into the pocket of his overcoat.

A quiet click echoed through the parking lot.

The headlights of the Rolls-Royce Spectre flashed once.

"I told you already," he said as he walked toward the car. "I’m just a professor."

"You also drive..." She gestured helplessly toward the car. "...that."

"I do."

"You make absolutely no sense."

He opened the rear door instead of the driver’s.

Emilia frowned. "What are you doing?"

"I believe these belong to you." He reached inside and lifted out the familiar black gift bag.

Her smile disappeared immediately. "You brought them."

"I said I would."

He held the bag toward her.

For a second, she simply stared at it before reluctantly accepting it.

She opened it, and the three perfume bottles rested inside exactly as she’d left them.

Pineapple.

Strawberry.

Vanilla.

Beneath them sat the velvet box.

She lifted it.

The delicate gold bracelet caught the light, with tiny diamonds sparkling against the black velvet.

Her fingers lingered over it, then she slowly closed the box again.

Her eyes lifted to Adrian. "The twenty thousand dollars..." Her voice grew quieter. "...caused everything."

He didn’t interrupt.

She looked down at the bag. "He found the envelope." A soft sigh escaped her. "He didn’t even ask where it came from."

She swallowed. "He just... decided." Her grip tightened around the handles. "He wanted a thousand dollars from me a few days ago."

She looked up.

"I told him I didn’t have it."

Another pause.

"When he saw the money..." She touched her bruised neck unconsciously. "...he decided I’d slept with you."

Silence settled between them.

Adrian remained still.

"So..." he asked quietly. "Do you still intend to stay on campus?"

She nodded immediately. "Yes."

"You aren’t afraid?"

"I am." She smiled sadly. "But I’m tired of running."

His eyes rested on her for several seconds. Then he nodded once.

"Very well." he took her ahand in his. "What do you want?"

She frowned. "What do you mean?"

"Regarding Noah." His voice remained calm. "What do you truly want?"

She looked away. "I don’t know."

"You do." He urged, rubbing her wrist softly.

She thought for a long time. "I..." She sighed. "I don’t want revenge."

His expression remained unreadable.

"I don’t even want to see him." She shook her head. "I just want him out of my life." She paused lightly. "If possible..." She met Adrian’s eyes. "...out of this university."

He held her gaze. "Leave that to me."

She blinked. "What?"

"You won’t see him again."

She searched his face. There wasn’t even the slightest trace of doubt in his voice, or his eyes.

Before she could ask another question, Adrian lifted one hand.

His fingertips brushed the loose strands of hair away from her face before his thumb rested gently against the corner of her cheek.

"So stubborn," he murmured. His thumb brushed lightly across her skin. "How does your face feel?"

She looked at him for a second before silently pulling the collar of her cardigan aside.

The fading bruises around her neck came into view beneath the parking lot lights.

His hand stopped moving, and his jaw tightened instantly. He studied every mark, then he nodded once.

When he spoke again, his voice had changed. It was quieter, and colder.

"How about twenty-five years in prison?"

Emilia blinked. "What?"

He never looked away from the bruises. "Twenty-five years." His thumb lowered from her cheek. "For doing this."

She stared at him, then she slapped his hand away from her neck.

"What is wrong with you?"

He looked at her.

"You’d better be joking." She took a full step backward. Her breathing had quickened. "Honestly..." Her eyes searched his face. "...who are you?"

He remained silent.

She laughed once. Not because anything was funny, but because she suddenly didn’t know what to think.

"You can’t just casually talk about giving someone twenty-five years in prison because he lost his temper." Her voice sharpened. "Are you even listening to yourself?"

Adrian said nothing. His silence only frustrated her more.

She shoved the gift bag hard against his chest. "I should go."

He caught the bag before it fell. "He didn’t just lose his temper, Emilia."

She froze.

His eyes met hers.

"The preliminary file I received tonight suggests his admission to Blackwood should never have been approved."

She frowned.

"There are irregularities." His voice remained calm. "And if they’re genuine..." He paused. "he shouldn’t be here."

The words sent an uncomfortable chill down her spine. She didn’t want to hear any more. She knew he followed her down here but she didn’t want another powerful man deciding what happened next.

Her fingers curled into fists. "Please..." Her voice trembled despite herself. "Stay away from me."

She turned before he could answer, and walked away.

Behind her, Adrian remained exactly where he was, holding the black gift bag in one hand and watching her disappear into the night.
