Rowan’s eyes darted from the entrance where Emilia just walked out from to Adrian, then back again.

"What is she doing here?" she asked softly, the surprise plain on her face.

Adrian did not respond to that. He was already halfway through the kitchen before Rowan would complete her sentence. "Emilia."

She didn’t stop.

Her footsteps echoed across the polished wooden floor as she broke into a run.

"Emilia." Adrian was after her.

She reached the hallway just as his fingers closed gently around her forearm.

She jerked free with a sharp slap of her hand. "Don’t touch me."

He stopped for only a second before catching up again. "Listen to me." He reached for her a second time.

She slapped his hand away harder than before. "I said don’t touch me."

Her voice cracked. She didn’t wait for his response.

She hurried into his room, grabbed her overnight bag from beside the bed, and yanked the zip open with trembling hands.

She picked up her clothes, phone charger, and toothbrush. She shoved everything inside without folding any of it.

Behind her, Adrian appeared quietly in the doorway.

"Emilia."

She froze for the briefest moment, then resumed packing.

"Bloody hell..." she breathed, her voice shaking. "...don’t speak to me."

He watched her in silence.

"You could’ve at least told me."

His brows drew together, completely confused. "Told you what?"

The zip of the bag screeched shut. She turned so quickly the strap struck against her leg.

"Was she the reason you refused to share a bed with me last night?"

He stared at her. "What?"

She sighed harshly. "I know we aren’t exclusive." Her breathing had already become uneven. "But you could’ve respected me enough to tell me you were seeing someone else while bringing me here."

Adrian didn’t answer immediately. He couldn’t quite understand how she’d reached that conclusion.

"Seeing someone else?"

She looked around the room helplessly before slapping her own thigh in frustration.

"And..." she said, pointing wildly toward the hallway, "...that’s my roommate."

Her voice broke. "My roommate, Adrian." Another laugh escaped her, quieter this time. "So you’re sleeping with my roommate too."

He raised a confused brow at her. "Your roommate?" then, his brows loosened.

A long silence settled between them.

Adrian’s expression remained calm, though concern had begun replacing the confusion in his eyes.

"Emilia."

"No."

"You’ve misunderstood—"

"I haven’t misunderstood anything!" she yelled at him.

"You have."

"I walked into your kitchen." she gestured to the door. "You laughed with her, and you looked comfortable."

"I was."

"You were shirtless."

Adrian blinked at her. For the first time, he blinked in a conversation. "It is my home." He pointed out.

She opened her mouth, and closed it again. Her breathing became noticeably quicker.

Adrian took one careful step forward.

"Take a deep breath." He advised.

She looked away.

"Emilia."

"I don’t want to."

His voice remained steady. "But I need you to breathe."

She shook her head. "I am breathing."

"No." His tone softened. "You’re trying not to cry."

That sentence almost undid her.

She grabbed her bag before he could see the tears gathering in her eyes.

"I want to leave."

"We will."

"Now." She brushed past him. Three steps later, she stopped. Her shoulders rose and fell once.

She turned back around.

Her eyes were already glassy. "Take me to school."

The anger in her voice had begun giving way to hurt.

"I don’t want to stay here anymore."

Adrian held her gaze for a long moment, then he nodded once. "I’ll get the keys."

She looked away before the first tear had the chance to fall.

Adrian didn’t try to stop her again. He simply picked up his car keys from the marble console by the entrance.

"I’ll drive."

Emilia didn’t answer.

She stood by the front door with her bag clutched tightly against her chest, refusing to look at him.

A few moments later, the elevator doors slid open. Neither of them spoke as they stepped inside.

The silence was suffocating.

The descent felt longer than it really was.

Adrian stood with one hand in his pocket, anf the other loosely holding his keys. His expression remained composed, but his jaw had been tight ever since she’d walked out of his room.

Emilia kept her eyes on the changing floor numbers above the doors. She wouldn’t look at him.

The underground garage was just as quiet when they got there. Adrian unlocked the car remotely.

The headlights blinked once.

Emilia climbed into the passenger seat without waiting for him to open the door this time.

The moment she fastened her seat belt, she turned toward the window.

Adrian settled behind the wheel, and the engine purred to life. He drove out of the building without saying a word.

The city slowly woke around them.

Morning traffic thickened.

People hurried along pavements with coffee cups in hand, and cyclists wove through cars. Everything looked painfully ordinary.

Inside the car, however, the silence only grew heavier.

Emilia folded her arms tightly across herself.

She replayed the scene in the kitchen over and over.

Rowan, her roommate. Standing comfortably in Adrian’s kitchen, laughing with him, and making breakfast as though she’d done it a hundred times before.

Her stomach twisted.

Noah had looked comfortable too. Comfortable enough to lie. Comfortable enough to make her feel foolish for asking questions until she finally caught him in the act.

She swallowed hard. Not again.

Beside her, Adrian kept both hands on the steering wheel. His eyes remained on the road.

Twice, he glanced toward her, and chose not to speak. Whatever explanation he wanted to give would not reach her now.

He knew that.

Every word would sound like an excuse to someone who had already decided what she’d seen.

So he drove patiently.

The silence lasted nearly an hour.

Eventually, the familiar streets surrounding Blackwood University came into view.

Adrian slowed.

Instead of heading toward the main entrance, he turned onto a quieter road.

Two streets away from campus, exactly where she’d asked. He eased the car to the curb and shifted into park.

Neither of them moved immediately.

Emilia reached for her seat belt, and the buckle clicked free.

She grabbed her bag. Still without looking at him, her fingers wrapped around the door handle.

"Emilia."

She paused.

Not because she wanted to, but because hearing him say her name still made her hesitate.

He spoke calmly. "When you’re calm, I’ll speak to you."

She closed her eyes.

His voice continued, steady and measured. "For now..." He looked toward the university buildings in the distance. "I need to see you attending my lecture."

’That was all?’ Emilia thought. ’No explanation?’

Emilia laughed once under her breath. She pushed the door open, and stepped out. Then she slammed it shut with enough force that the sound echoed down the quiet street.

For a second, she stood beside the car with her back to him, waiting.

Part of her expected him to get out, to stop her, and explain.

Instead, the engine remained running.

A moment later, Adrian pulled away from the curb. He didn’t look back, or say another word. He simply drove off.

Emilia watched the car disappear around the corner.

Only after it was completely out of sight did she let out the shaky breath she’d been holding.

Then, tightening her grip on her bag, she turned toward campus and began to walk alone.
