The lecture hall was already half full by the time Emilia reached the Economics building.

She paused outside the doors for a second, and took in a deep breath.

The familiar hum of conversation drifted into the corridor, with laughters, and chairs scraping against the floor.

Everything around her was painfully normal.

She took one slow breath before pushing the doors open. No one looked at her immediately.

She was grateful for that.

Her backpack hung from one shoulder as she made her way toward her usual seat near the back of the hall, close enough to hear the lecturer clearly but far enough to disappear if she wanted.

She reached the seat, rested her backpack on the desk, then stopped.

For a second, she simply stood there.

The memories of the morning crowded in without permission.

Rowan, and Adrian. His kitchen. His laughter. The drive back, and the silence.

Slowly, the memories of her last day in school before the little disappearance clogged her memories.

Noah.

Her chest tightened.

She stared at the empty chair beside hers before quietly picking up her backpack again. She walked farther down the row until she reached a seat almost in the middle.

Far enough away that she wouldn’t have to think.

She set her bag down and slid into the chair. The wooden desk felt cool beneath her fingertips.

Her heart still felt strangely heavy, which was ridiculous.

They weren’t together, and they weren’t exclusive. She had no claim over him.

So why did it hurt?

She rubbed her forehead to stop thinking about it.

The more she replayed the morning, the more embarrassed she became.

Maybe she’d overreacted. Maybe she hadn’t. She honestly didn’t know anymore.

A shadow fell across her desk.

"Hi?"

Emilia looked up. Three girls stood beside her.

She recognised all of them from class, though she’d never spoken to two of them for more than a passing greeting.

The tallest smiled gently.

"You’re Emilia, right?"

She nodded.

"We just wanted to check on you."

Emilia frowned slightly. "Check on me?"

Another girl tucked a strand of her brown hair behind her ear. "We heard about... Noah."

There was no mockery in her voice, only genuine sympathy.

"We are really sorry."

Emilia blinked. Words travelled quickly. She supposed she shouldn’t be surprised. Universities survived on rumours almost as much as lectures.

The third girl offered a small smile. "We know we don’t really know each other." Her smile widened softly. "But..."

"You’ve always seemed nice." Another girl chimmed in. "And we just wanted to make sure you’re okay."

For the first time that morning, Emilia felt something in her chest soften. Kindness from strangers always caught her off guard.

She smiled politely. "I’m okay."

The girls exchanged a look that clearly said they didn’t completely believe her.

"You don’t have to pretend," one of them said quietly.

"I’m not pretending." Not entirely. She was functioning. That counted for something.

The tallest girl leaned lightly against the empty desk. "We also noticed you haven’t been in class."

Emilia’s smile tightened. "I went home."

"For the weekend?"

She nodded. "I left on Friday last week. I just needed..." She searched for the right words before smiling faintly. "...to rest my head with my mum."

Something about the sentence made all three girls smile knowingly.

"I get that," one of them admitted.

"My mum fixes everything with food."

"My dad just gives me money," another laughed, and rolled her eyes. "The man has no emotional range."

The four of them laughed together. It was softly enough to make Emilia feel, for a brief moment, like herself again.

"I’m glad you’re back," the tallest girl said sincerely.

"So are we."

Emilia looked between them. "Thank you. I mean that." She cleared her throat. "You didn’t have to come over."

One of them shrugged. "Girls should look after girls."

They smiled and returned to their seats.

She watched them go.

A familiar voice interrupted her thoughts.

"There you are." Lucy dropped into the seat beside her with her usual energy. "I’ve been calling you for days."

Emilia smiled apologetically.

"My phone spent most of the weekend on Do Not Disturb."

Lucy looked her over carefully. "You look better."

"I look bad enough to have looked better?"

Lucy grinned. "You look like someone who wanted to fight the sun."

That earned the smallest laugh from Emilia.

"Welcome back," Lucy said triumphantly. "I’ve been waiting for you to attend lectures together."

Emilia rolled her eyes. "I wasn’t gone forever."

"No." Lucy nudged her shoulder gently. "But you scared us a little."

Emilia looked down at her hands. "I’m sorry."

Lucy immediately shook her head. "Don’t apologise. You needed time."

A brief silence settled between them. Emilia looked down at her phone screen, hoping Kylie had responded. She saw just two ticks from an hour ago.

Lucy frowned. "Seriously though..." she stared at Emilia intesnsly. "Are you okay?"

Emilia hesitated.

She thought about Noah, then about Adrian, and then about Rowan. She swallowed everything back down.

"I will be."

Lucy studied her for another second before nodding. "I’ll accept that answer."

The lecture hall gradually filled until almost every seat was occupied. Students chatted across rows, and some even argued over football.

The familiar rhythm of university life slowly surrounded Emilia. It helped. Not enough, but a little.

A few moments later, the conversations began to quiet.

The door at the front of the hall opened.

Emilia instinctively looked up. For one foolish second, she expected to see Adrian.

Instead, another lecturer stepped inside.

He wasn’t carrying any notes. Instead, he scanned the room before his eyes settled on her.

"Miss Hayes?"

The entire hall became noticeably quieter.

Emilia straightened. "Yes, sir?"

"The Dean of Students has requested your presence."

A faint murmur rippled through the room.

The lecturer offered a polite but unreadable expression. "If you would come with me now, please."

Emilia’s fingers slowly tightened around the strap of her backpack.

Beside her, Lucy whispered, "What did you do?"

Emilia looked just as confused. "I..." She stood slowly. "...I don’t know."
