Emilia stood outside the dorm room for several seconds before finally sliding the key into the lock.
Her stomach tightened.
She wasn’t sure what waited on the other side. An angry roommate, an awkward silence, or the consequences of accusing her brother of cheating.
She pushed the door open.
The familiar scent of the vanilla candles seated on her desk greeted her first.
Rowan sat cross-legged on her bed, with her laptop balanced across her thighs. She didn’t even glance up immediately.
"You took your time."
Emilia swallowed. "Hi." She greeted awkwardly.
"Hm."
The room fell quiet again.
Emilia carefully stepped inside and closed the door behind her.
Before she could gather enough courage to speak, Rowan pointed toward Emilia’s study desk.
"My brother asked me to give those to you."
Emilia turned.
Several neatly wrapped gift bags rested on the table, just beside the vanilla candles.
She blinked. "He did?"
Rowan’s voice hardened immediately. "That’s what I said."
Emilia slowly walked over. "Rowan..." She hesitated. "I’m really sorry."
That finally earned her a look.
Rowan raised one eyebrow. "I doubt I know what you’re talking about."
The answer was so even that Emilia couldn’t tell whether she’d been forgiven or not.
Emilia gave the smallest nod before looking down at the bags.
Inside the first were the three perfume bottles from earlier. Vanilla, strawberry, and pineapple.
She couldn’t help smiling.
Beneath them rested the delicate bracelet he had given her earlier too. At the bottom of the bag sat a small brown box tied with cream ribbon.
She untied it carefully.
Inside lay a leather-bound notebook, its cover was embossed with tiny pressed wildflowers in warm brown and gold.
A folded card rested on top.
She unfolded it.
"I wasn’t sure whether you’d rather talk or write. Either way... Tell me how you feel. Voice note preferred."
A reluctant smile found her face. She left the other bags for a moment, and then reached for her phone.
"Hi..." She laughed nervously as she negan the voicemail. "I still feel incredibly embarrassed. I accused you of things I shouldn’t have."
"I’m sorry. And..." She looked down at the notebook. "Thank you for remembering the perfumes. I really like them."
She stopped recording before she could ramble any further. She returned her phone to the desk, and picked up the second box.
Only then did she notice Rowan watching her. Very closely.
"How did you meet my brother?"
Emilia looked up.
Rowan had closed her laptop now. Her expression wasn’t angry. It was searching.
"And," she continued quietly, "what exactly are you doing with him?"
Emilia hesitated. She took in a soft inhale. "It’s... complicated."
"I gathered."
Neither of them spoke for several moments.
Then Rowan sighed. Without another word, she stood.
She lifted the hem of her tank top just high enough to expose the scarred skin across one side of her abdomen.
The healed burn marks were impossible to miss.
Emilia’s breath caught. "Oh my God..." She instinctively took a step back, genuinely taken aback.
Rowan lowered her shirt.
"My brother’s ex did that."
Silence swallowed the room.
"He spent years blaming himself." Her voice remained calm, but there was steel beneath every word. "So understand where I’m coming from."
She held Emilia’s gaze. "I don’t know you yet. But I know him." She tightened her fists. "And I won’t watch someone break him again."
Her expression softened just a fraction. "So if you’re here to play games..." She shook her head. "Walk away now."
Emilia’s eyes never left the scars. Very quietly, she whispered, "I’m not her." She cleared her throat softly, still shaken. "I’ll never do that."
"I hope you’re right." Rowan lifted her tattooed arms and gathered her hair into a loose bun. "I might as well hurt you first if I catch even a sniff of you playing games with him."
The threat was delivered so matter-of-factly that Emilia couldn’t tell whether she was joking.
"Noted."
Rowan snorted quietly before dropping back onto her bed.
The silence that followed felt different now. Not comfortable.
Emilia looked down at the remaining gift bag resting on her desk. She reached inside slowly.
Soft fabric brushed against her fingertips.
Her brows knitted together as she carefully lifted it free. A dress unfolded before her. It was breathtaking.
Aubergine silk caught the late afternoon light, flowing effortlessly to the floor. The strapless bodice was elegantly structured, while the skirt fell in graceful folds that looked almost weightless.
It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t covered in crystals or unnecessary embellishments. It was simply... beautiful.
It was something she would never have imagined herself wearing. Nestled beneath the dress sat a shoebox.
She opened it carefully.
A pair of black red button heels rested inside, with the leather smooth and impossibly elegant.
Emilia simply stared at it.
She didn’t reach for them.
She only looked, her fingers hovering above the box as though she were afraid touching them might somehow ruin them.
A small envelope slipped from beneath the lid.
She unfolded the cream-coloured note.
"I’m not trying to change anything about you. But if these match your taste, I hope you’ll wear them tomorrow.
~A."
Her lips parted.
For several long seconds, she said nothing. He had somehow managed to make an extravagant gift feel like a choice.
Her gaze drifted back to the heels.
They looked far too expensive. Far too beautiful, and far too... much.
A knot formed quietly in her throat.
"I don’t..." she whispered almost to herself. "I don’t think I can take these."
Beside her, Rowan’s voice broke the silence.
"He’s often like that."
Emilia looked towards her.
Rowan nodded toward the gifts from her bed.
"With presents." She leaned back against her pillows.
"You’ll have to get used to the best of everything..." A soft smile tugged at one corner of her mouth. "...as long as he’s even a tiny bit interested in you."
Emilia’s fingers tightened around the note the moment Rowan mentioned a possibility of Adrian being interested in her.
She swallowed. Then she offered Rowan a small, tight smile.
