By the time the clock on Emilia’s phone read 6:58 p.m., she had already checked it six times.
She stood beneath the old stone archway just outside the women’s residence hall, smoothing invisible creases from the aubergine gown for what had to be the tenth time.
The dress fit perfectly. Too perfectly. She still couldn’t quite believe she’d agreed to wear it.
Her hair had been gathered into an elegant side-swept style, with every dark strand pinned over one shoulder, leaving the graceful line of her neck and collarbone exposed.
Rowan had insisted on doing it herself, muttering something about, "If you’re going to wear my brother’s dress, at least let your hair cooperate."
Emilia had rolled her eyes.
But secretly, she loved that for once, she had gotten her self together without stressing Kylie to come over.
A cool evening breeze stirred the trees lining the campus road. She texted Kylie one more time.
Emilia: Heading out now. I hope I don’t mess this up. We are not together, but this would be my first date.
Three dots appeared almost immediately.
Kylie: Just be yourself, babe. I was blessed to see the pictures you sent. He’d be forever anointed since he’s going to see you in person tonight.
Emilia smiled. Just before she’d type, headlights appeared. She immediately sent a heart emoji, and placed her phone back into her small purse.
A low, refined engine purred toward the curb before coming to a smooth stop.
It wasn’t Adrian’s usual car.
This one sat impossibly low to the ground, its sculpted carbon-fibre body reflecting the campus lights like liquid obsidian. Every line spoke of engineering rather than excess.
Emilia knew almost nothing about exotic cars. Even she could tell this one belonged in a museum.
The driver’s door lifted upward in a graceful motion.
A tall figure stepped out in dark tailored suit, and black leather gloves. Covering the upper half of his face, was a finely crafted black masquerade mask.
Adrian closed the door quietly before looking up. His gaze found her instantly. He stopped walking.
For one suspended heartbeat, neither of them moved. His eyes travelled over her slowly.
The aubergine gown, the side-swept hair, the elegant curve of her neck, and the delicate heels.
He gave one slow nod.
Emilia felt warmth rush to her cheeks.
He looked unfair. She had seen him in suits before, shirtless, and in casual clothes. Nothing had prepared her for this.
The mask somehow made him even more striking, sharpening the quiet confidence he carried so naturally.
He began walking toward her. Each measured step only made her heart beat faster.
’Pull yourself together,’ she scolded herself.
He stopped close enough for only the two of them to hear each other.
"You came."
"I said I would."
For a moment, he simply looked at her.
"I’ve had meetings with presidents," he said quietly. "Negotiated acquisitions worth billions."
A faint smile touched his lips.
"And somehow..." His eyes never left hers. "...you’ve managed to make me nervous at this very moment."
Emilia blinked. "You?"
"You." She laughed softly. "I don’t believe that."
"You should." He confessed.
The confession settled warmly between them.
Slowly, Adrian lifted one hand.
His fingertips brushed lightly against the loose strands framing her face before he leaned forward.
His lips barely grazed the side of her neck. Her vanilla scent hit his nostrils, and he pressed the kiss to the side of her neck.
When he straightened, he reached for her hand instead. Turning it gently over, he pressed a brief kiss against the back of it.
"You look extraordinary."
Her smile became almost shy. "So do you."
He reached into his jacket pocket. "I have one more thing."
He unfolded an elegant masquerade mask.
It matched her dress perfectly.
Rich aubergine velvet with delicate metallic embroidery sweeping across one side, mysterious without hiding her completely.
"I hope you don’t mind a little change tonight."
Emilia stared at the mask, then into his eyes. "It’s beautiful."
She reached for it instinctively.
Adrian lifted it just out of reach.
She looked up in surprise. A playful smile finally appeared across her lip, as she wondered why he wouldn’t give it to her.
"Turn around, sweetheart."
She obeyed.
Carefully, he stepped behind her. His fingers gathered the satin ribbons. They brushed lightly against the back of her neck as he tied them into a neat bow.
He took his time. He visibly wanted to remember the moment. When he finished, his fingertips lingered for only a second.
"There."
She turned.
His expression softened. "Perfect."
Emilia smiled so brightly that he almost forgot where they were. Without another word, Adrian walked to the passenger side of the car.
He opened the door for her.
"After you."
She looked at the impossibly luxurious interior before climbing inside. Everything smelled of fine leather and cedar.
She laughed quietly. "I’m almost afraid to touch anything."
"I assure you," Adrian replied as he walked around to the driver’s side, "it’s meant to be used."
A moment later he settled behind the wheel.
The doors closed with a muted whisper, shutting out the sounds of campus.
For a brief moment, neither of them reached for the ignition. They simply looked at one another.
Adrian reached across the centre console, gently brushing a thumb along the line of her jaw.
His gaze held hers with quiet intensity.
"You must have been designed," he murmured, "not merely made."
Emilia’s breath caught.
He smiled faintly.
"There are works of art people travel across continents to see." His thumb rested lightly beneath her chin. "And then there are your eyes."
He searched them as though committing their colour to memory.
"I’ve never decided whether they’re green touched by gold...or gold pretending to be green."
She couldn’t find a single word.
"They’re remarkable."
Emilia lowered her gaze for a moment before looking back up.
"They’re not exactly in perfect working order," she teased.
A faint smile touched Adrian’s lips.
"Tomorrow isn’t a weekday," he said quietly. "I’ll have my doctor take a look at you."
Emilia’s breath caught.
She edged closer until only inches separated them. Gently, she slipped her fingers around his free hand and lifted it between them.
Adrian didn’t resist.
With careful deliberation, she guided his hand to the curve of her chest, watching his face as she did.
A quiet sigh escaped her as his fingers instinctively flexed against the fabric. He adjusted the neckline of her gown with slow, measured movements, with his gaze never leaving hers.
He let out a quiet breath, and cupped her breast in his palm, and caught her nipple between his fingers.
She smiled, a soft, almost triumphant smile before leaning in to capture his lips again.
The kiss lingered, warm and unhurried, until Adrian reluctantly drew back.
"No sex," he murmured, his forehead resting lightly against hers. "Not yet. I want tonight to be perfect for you."
Emilia parted her lips to protest, but he gently brushed his thumb across them, silencing her before she could speak.
Her eyes lifted to his, bright with amusement, need, and longing.
Without breaking eye contact, she wrapped her fingers around his wrist and pressed a tender kiss to his thumb.
Adrian exhaled softly. With practiced care, he straightened the front of her gown, ensuring everything was back in place before letting his hand fall away.
