Kylie never answers the door.

She had once proudly declared that if someone knew her well enough to visit unannounced, then they knew where the spare key was.

Emilia let herself in.

The apartment smelled faintly of vanilla candles and expensive perfume.

"I’m here," she called, closing the door behind her.

She got no response from inside.

Rather, she heard a muffled laugh, followed by another. She rounded the corner toward the living room.

"Oh..." She gasped, almost not surprised.

Kylie was sitting astride a man on the couch, with one hand tangled in his dark hair as they kissed with the kind of enthusiasm that suggested neither of them had heard the front door open.

The man held her securely around the waist, smiling against the kiss as she pulled him even closer.

Emilia sighed. "Seriously?"

Neither of them reacted.

"I’m here," she announced louder this time, already turning toward the kitchen. "I’d appreciate not witnessing your future children being conceived."

A muffled sound escaped Kylie.

She broke away so abruptly that the poor man looked genuinely confused.

"What?"

"My best friend is here."

"So?" He grunted.

Kylie stared at him as though he’d asked the stupidest question imaginable.

"So... we’re done." She replied, matter of fact.

"What?"

She climbed off his lap in one swift movement. Without another word, she began collecting his clothes from around the apartment.

She picked up his shirt, his jeans, his shoes, and his jacket. She bundled them into his arms.

"Babe—"

"What?" Her eyes widened in disgust. "Babe? Calling me Babe? We just met last night. Don’t be funny."

"But—"

"No."

He scoffed in disbelief. "I literally just got here."

"And now you’re literally leaving." She shrugged.

"Kylie."

"My best friend needs me." She smiled sweetly. "You rank way below her."

Before he could argue again, she marched him toward the front door.

"You’ll call me?"

"I won’t."

"You said yesterday—"

She cut him off. "I was optimistic yesterday."

She opened the door for him to walk out. He walked out. "Bye." She yelled at him. The door slammed shut at his face before he managed another sentence.

A beat later...

"You can text!" he shouted from the hallway.

"No, thank you!" Kylie yelled back cheerfully.

She locked the door, then turned around.

Only now did she realize she was standing in nothing but an oversized shirt that definitely wasn’t hers.

She wandered toward the bedroom, grabbing a discarded T-shirt from the chair and pulling it over her head as she walked.

Her blonde hair was gloriously chaotic, falling over one shoulder in loose waves. Her sharp blue eyes scanned the room as she walked around with bare feet.

Her facial expression could dismantle a person in seconds.

"What’s up, babe?" she asked casually as she walked into the kitchen.

Emilia stood with her back toward her, one hand wrapped around a glass of water. She didn’t answer.

Kylie’s smile disappeared.

Immediately, she crossed the room in three quick strides. Without a word, she gently took the glass from Emilia’s hand and set it on the counter.

Then she turned her around.

"What happened?" Her blue eyes sharpened instantly with protective alertness.

Right now, she looked like a mother hen spotting danger.

Emilia tried to smile.

It lasted half a second, and tears gathered her eyes. Kylie’s shoulders relaxed into an exhausted sigh.

"Fuck it."

"What?"

"Please don’t tell me this is about Noah." She sighed.

Emilia looked down.

Kylie closed her eyes, and rubbed her palm on her forehead. "Oh, that bugger."

Emilia blinked. "Kylie."

"What?" She shrugged. "From everything I’ve gathered over the last three years, he contributed absolutely nothing."

Emilia frowned. "He—"

"No." Kylie cut her off, and held up one finger. "Financially?" She counted. "Nothing. Emotionally?" She raised another finger. "Questionable." She raised a third. "And sexually..." She tilted her head thoughtfully.

"...didn’t you once buy that sex toy because the man couldn’t even make you climax?"

"Kylie!" Emilia gasped, immediately smacking her shoulder. "Never say that again."

"Why?" Kylie rubbed her shoulder dramatically. "It’s true." She wandered back toward the living room. "I’m simply saying I’ve met more impressive damp cardboard."

"Kylie!"

"What?" She looked entirely innocent.

"No use crying over a man whose greatest romantic achievement was making you disappointed."

Despite herself, a tiny laugh escaped Emilia.

Kylie pointed triumphantly. "I heard that."

"I wasn’t laughing." Emilia lied swiftly.

"You absolutely were."

Emilia shook her head. "I hate you."

Kylie sat cross-legged on the couch. "You adore me."

The room felt question, and Kylie’s teasing expression softened.

"So." She folded her arms. "What did he do this time?"

Emilia told her. By the time she finished, the room had become silent.

Kylie leaned back against the couch. "That’s it?"

Emilia nodded.

"That’s it."

"Hm."

"That’s all you have to say?" Emilia asked her, raising a brow at her.

Kylie stared up at the ceiling, really thoughtful. "I’m deciding whether prison is worth it." She said seriously.

"Kylie."

"I’m serious, Em." She sighed. "That bastard. I’ve wanted to punch him since the day he complained that you worked too much."

Emilia smiled weakly. "You remember that?"

"I remember everything." Kylie reached over and squeezed her hand. "I also remember telling you that you deserved someone who looked at you the way you looked at him."

Emilia swallowed. "There is..." She hesitated. "One more thing."

Kylie’s eyes narrowed.

"I met someone." Emilia began quietly.

"You what?"

"I met someone."

"When?"

"Last night."

Kylie shot to her feet. "Last night?"

Emilia nodded.

"The same night you dumped Noah?" She half yelled.

"I didn’t dump him."

"You know what I mean." Kylie grabbed both of Emilia’s shoulders. "Tell me everything."

Emilia laughed. For the first time since yesterday, it felt genuine.

She told Kylie about the rain, the hotel, the bar, the stranger who barely spoke, the incredible sex, the quiet breakfast, the kiss on her forehead, and the mysterious goodbye.

She left out one thing. The money.

When she finished, Kylie squealed. She actually squealed.

"Oh my God."

"I know."

"No, you don’t know." She pointed dramatically. "You had a meet-cute."

"I did not."

"You absolutely did."

"He didn’t even tell me his name." Emilia’s eyes narrowed.

"Which somehow makes it hotter."

"Kylie."

"What?" She grinned. "You met a handsome older stranger who treated you with more kindness in one night than Noah managed in three years."

Emilia looked down at her hands. "I need to find him."

Kylie blinked. "You do?"

Emilia nodded slowly. "I need to return something to him."

Kylie studied her friend’s face for a long moment. Then a slow smile spread across her lips.

"Oh..." She teased.
