Kylie smiled, still amused, but her expression softened. "Em..."
Emilia looked up.
"Did he make you feel safe?"
Emilia thinks about it. Then quietly, she nodded. "Yes."
Kylie stared at Emilia softly. Then, she patted her head softly, and smiled at her. Instantly, her blue eyes narrowed, then widened.
Her eyes narrowed again. "Hold on." Her voice got serious.
Emilia frowned. "What?"
"You’ve spent the last twenty minutes telling me about the heartbreak..." She pointed accusingly. "...and somehow forgot to mention the biggest thing that’s ever happened to you."
Emilia blinked at her.
"The scholarship." Kylie reminded her. "Your mum called me yesterday to tell me. And I called you a thousand times."
Kylie gasped so dramatically that Emilia actually laughed. "You forgot?"
"I’ve had a strange twenty-four hours."
"A strange—" Kylie threw both hands into the air. "You got cheated on." She raised one finger. "You had what sounds suspiciously like the greatest rebound in modern history."
She lifted a second finger. "And you forgot to tell me you got into Blackwood?"
Emilia smiled sheepishly. "I may have been a little distracted."
"A little?" Kylie looked personally offended. "Babe." She grabbed Emilia by both shoulders. "You." She yelled into Emilia’s face, and paused. "Got." She paused again, for the words to sink into Emilia’s head. "Into Blackwood." She yelled.
Each word came louder than the last.
"I know."
"No." Kylie shook her head violently. "I don’t think you do." She stood up quickly, and began pacing the apartment. "Do you have any idea how many people apply there every year?"
"I..."
"No." She answered for her. "You don’t." She spun around. "You’re one of the smartest people I’ve ever met."
Kylie threw her hand into the air. "You once explained economics to me using pizza." She pointed triumphantly.
Emilia laughed again.
Kylie stopped walking. For a brief second, she simply watched her. She hadn’t heard that laugh since before Noah.
It suited Emilia, far more than tears ever could.
Without warning, Kylie reached for her phone.
"What are you doing?"
"Celebrating."
"With what?"
Kylie was already scrolling through her contacts. She stopped at one name.
Her Dad.
Emilia’s smile slowly disappeared when she caught a glimpse of the name. "You..." She began softly, the paused.
Kylie pressed the call button.
Emilia went on. "...are calling your father?"
The phone rang once. When it rang twice, it connected.
"Hello?"
Kylie’s expression never changed. "Hi." She paused for a second. "I need money."
Silence.
Another pause.
"Yes." She replied, and listened for exactly three seconds. "Thank you."
The call ended, and that was it.
Emilia stared at her. "You’re still not speaking to him?"
Kylie tossed the phone onto the bed as though it were nothing more than another object in the room.
"No amount of years can fix what he did to my mum." She said it almost casually. "But his bank account has never done anything to me."
Emilia couldn’t help smiling. "You are unbelievable."
A second later...
Ping.
Both women looked toward the phone. Kylie snatched it up. Her eyes scanned the notification, and then, she squealed.
"He sent it!" She jumped off the bed. She looked again. "He sent extra!"
She burst into laughter. Without warning she grabbed Emilia’s wrist and pulled her upright.
"What are you doing?"
"We’re going out."
"Kylie—"
"No." She pointed a finger at Emilia. "For the next twenty-four hours..." She dramatically swept her hand through the air. "men do not exist."
Emilia laughed.
"You’ve spent three years building someone else’s future." Kylie poked her forehead gently. "It’s your turn now."
She wrapped an arm around Emilia’s shoulders.
"My best friend got into Blackwood University." She smiled so brightly it was impossible not to smile back. "We’re celebrating properly."
Emilia looked at her.
Most people would’ve spent the afternoon asking questions about the mysterious stranger, or talking about Noah.
Kylie hadn’t.
Not once.
Instead, she’d made Emilia remember the thing she’d worked years to achieve.
The thing that mattered before Noah, before the heartbreak, before the rain, and before strangers in expensive hotels.
Blackwood.
A lump formed in Emilia’s throat. "Thank you. I can never repay you."
Kylie frowned. "What for?"
"For reminding me that my life didn’t end yesterday."
Kylie rolled her eyes. "Obviously it didn’t." She reached for the apartment keys. "It just got interesting."
She linked their arms together and headed for the door.
"Come on."
"Where are we going?"
"I have absolutely no idea." She grinned. "But wherever it is..." She looked sideways at Emilia. "...it’s the first day of the rest of your life."
