Kylie stared at her as though she’d lost her mind. "Maya."

"I mean it."

Kylie looked thoroughly unconvinced.

Maya smiled softly. "If he tries anything..." She looked directly at Christian. "...I’ll make sure they never find your body."

Christian inclined his head politely.

Daniel stared at Christian for a second. "I’ve known him for years. Never interacted with him, but he always ride here."

Kylie looked at him

"He’s decent." Daniel shrugged. "He’ll get you home."

A long silence followed.

Finally, Kylie sighed through her nose. "I hate every single one of you." She sounded tired.

"I know," Maya said sympathetically.

Christian held out a helmet.

"So..."

She ignored it.

He continued holding it out. "Kylie."

She glared at him. With an annoyed sigh, she snatched the helmet from his hand. "I’m doing this because I don’t have a choice."

She stared at him suspiciously.

He smiled. "Ladies first."

She rolled her eyes for what felt like the hundredth time that night and walked towards the waiting motorcycle.

Christian followed a step behind, unable to stop the smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.

Christain reached the matte-black motorcycle. He walked over, and rested one hand on the handlebar.

The engine was still warm from the race.

He turned to find Kylie standing exactly where she’d been, her arms folded so tightly they might have been welded together.

She hadn’t moved an inch.

"Aren’t you coming?"

She planted one hand on her hip. "I’ve changed my mind."

"You hadn’t made it."

"I’ve made it now."

"And?"

"I’m not getting on your motorcycle."

Christian regarded her for a long moment before giving a slow nod. "Alright."

She blinked.

"I’ll wait."

"For what?"

"For you to finish arguing with yourself." He leaned casually against the bike. "You’re arguing with the fact that you know you’re coming."

Kylie let out a short, disbelieving laugh. "You are unbelievably full of yourself."

"So I’ve been told."

She looked towards Maya. Her cousin merely smiled apologetically.

"Don’t look at me," Maya said. "I’m still leaving with Daniel."

Kylie sighed through her nose. She turned back to Christian. "I want my phone."

"You’ll have it when I know you’ve arrived home."

"I am perfectly capable of arriving home without your supervision."

"I don’t doubt that."

"Then give it back."

"No."

She stared at him for several long seconds. She pointed at the motorcycle. "And if I fall?"

"You won’t."

"You raced this thing into a pile of tyres."

"I was distracted."

She raised an eyebrow. "By loose gravel."

"I was going to say poor road conditions."

Christian reached into the storage compartment beneath the seat and retrieved a second helmet.

He held it out.

This time she took it without another word.

She examined it critically. "It better not smell."

"It doesn’t."

She pulled it over her head and fastened the strap herself. Christian watched her for a second before speaking.

"You’ve never been on a motorcycle before."

She looked up sharply. "How do you know?"

"You would’ve complained about the helmet before putting it on."

"I did complain."

"Not enough."

She gave him a flat look. "I liked you better unconscious."

"I was unconscious for approximately three seconds."

She snorted an unexpected laugh. "Pity."

Christian laughed under his breath before straightening. "Ready?"

"No."

She looked at the motorcycle, and looked back at him. Then muttered something entirely inappropriate beneath her breath before stepping closer.

"I’m only doing this because Maya abandoned me."

He smiled.

She reached the side of the motorcycle and immediately frowned.

"How exactly am I supposed to get on this thing?"

Christian’s eyes flickered briefly to the narrow seat, then back to her. "I can help."

"I don’t need help."

She narrowed her eyes. She looked at the seat again. It was higher than she’d expected. Awkward enough that climbing on gracefully was proving impossible.

Christian quietly extended his hand.

She looked at it, then at him.

He kept his hand exactly where it was. "I’m also trying to stop you from falling off my motorcycle before we’ve even left."

She looked at his hand again.

She studied his strong fingers, the faint scratches across his knuckles, and the cut near his temple had dried into a thin crimson line.

She placed her hand in his, and instantly, the world seemed to hesitate. His fingers closed gently around hers.

His fingers were nuch warmer than she expected. For one impossible heartbeat, neither of them moved.

The shouting around them blurred into nothing, and the roar of departing engines faded until it felt impossibly distant.

Even the cool pre-dawn breeze seemed to soften as their eyes met.

Those ridiculously blue eyes, they were far too close now.

Christian forgot what he’d been about to say.

She simply stared back.

Then, just as suddenly, Kylie blinked. She cleared her throat and withdrew slightly.

"Don’t make this weird."

Christian seemed to come back to himself. His grip loosened immediately. "Right." He apologised awkwardly.

He looked away first, almost clearing his own thoughts, before steadying the motorcycle with one hand.

"Step here."

She did.

His hand returned to her waist for only the briefest moment. Firm enough to guide, and careful enough not to linger.

With effortless strength, he helped lift her onto the seat. Once he was certain she was balanced, he stepped back.

Kylie adjusted herself, pretending nothing unusual had happened.

Christian swung onto the motorcycle behind her in one smooth movement.

He accepted the helmet she’d removed from his hand earlier, secured it, then leaned forward to start the engine.

As he did, a faint scent reached him cool fresh scent hit him. Like winter air after rain.

Her shampoo. It cut cleanly through the lingering smell of petrol, smoke and burnt rubber.

He unexpectedly paused for the smallest fraction of a second.

Kylie felt the hesitation. "What?"

He blinked once before pressing the ignition.

"Nothing."

The engine rumbled to life beneath them.

She wasn’t convinced. "You’re strange." She sighed dramatically inside her helmet. "This is going to be the longest ride of my life."

Christian smiled to himself as the motorcycle rolled slowly out of the abandoned industrial district.
