Emilia woke to warmth.
A different kind of warmth, and not the warmth of the blankets wrapped around her, nor the faint golden sunlight slipping through the gaps in the curtains.
A featherlight kiss brushed against her cheek.
Then another patiently dropped on her nose. The corner of her eye, and the delicate skin beneath her lashes.
Another landed behind her ear, lingering just long enough to pull a sleepy smile onto her face.
She knew exactly who it was.
Before the next kiss could find its destination, Emilia parted her eyes. The world came into focus slowly.
Adrian.
His face hovered only inches from hers, his grey eyes carried that familiar quiet softness she rarely saw anyone else receive.
Then, as though he had been waiting for her to wake, he leaned down once more. His lips found hers.
Emilia smiled into the kiss.
Her fingers disappeared into his hair, combing gently through the soft dark strands before curling around the back of his head.
She drew him closer.
The kiss deepened naturally, unhurried, as she pushed herself upright beneath the blankets.
Adrian’s arm circled her waist, steadying her movement before pulling her comfortably against him.
His free hand slipped into her thick hair, slowly separating the strands as though committing every texture to memory.
Neither of them spoke.
They simply remained there, sharing the quiet moment. The city outside was only beginning to wake.
Eventually, Adrian eased back. Only enough for their foreheads to rest together.
Emilia opened her eyes completely, finding him already watching her. There was that tiny smile again.
One that always seemed reserved solely for her.
"It’s six o’clock," he murmured.
She blinked.
"And it’s Monday."
Emilia let out the smallest groan. "My lectures don’t start until ten."
Her voice still carried the husky softness of sleep. Only then did she truly look at him.
He was already dressed.
His crisp white shirt had been buttoned neatly, with the sleeves fastened, and his dark trousers perfectly pressed.
Only his suit jacket was missing.
Her gaze traveled over him once before returning to his face.
She sighed dramatically. "You’ve been awake for ages, and you even got dressed without waking me."
She narrowed her eyes suspiciously. Her eyes widened slightly. She immediately pulled away from him.
"I’m not leaving this hotel with you."
Adrian raised an eyebrow.
"I have a reputation to protect." She told him, searching his eyes.
She pointed toward the door.
"If anyone sees me walking out with my professor first thing on a Monday morning, I would get in trouble with the school."
She opened her mouth to continue.
Adrian gently placed his thumb against her lips. The words disappeared instantly. "Surely," he assured her quietly, "you’re not."
The corners of his eyes softened. He turned slightly and gestured toward the couch near the window.
Folded neatly across it were fresh clothes. A simple cream blouse, dark jeans, a blue cardigan, and a pair of white sneakers rested neatly on the floor beside them.
Emilia stared at him. "When did you—"
"I had them delivered."
She looked back at him. "Thank you." She smiled softly.
"When you’re ready to leave," he continued, "there’ll be a cab waiting downstairs."
"So we’re not leaving together."
"No."
She smiled. "I forgot you aren’t stupid."
He chuckled quietly. "I’ll head straight to campus."
She nodded. "Okay."
Silence settled between them once more. Neither of them seemed eager to be the first to move.
Finally, Adrian leaned down. His lips rested briefly against the crown of her head. He planted a gentle kiss there, one filled with a tenderness that made her chest tighten.
"I’ll be leaving in a few minutes," he said softly.
She looked up. "Have a good day."
"You too."
"And..." He paused. "Don’t skip breakfast."
Her smile widened. "Yes, Professor."
He sighed. "You enjoy saying that far too much."
"I really do."
He shook his head with quiet amusement before turning toward the door. His hand rested briefly on the handle, then he glanced back.
She was still watching him.
He smiled one last time, and the door clicked shut behind him.
....
Nearly two hours later, Emilia finally stepped out of the hotel suite.
She had showered, changed into the clothes Adrian had arranged, and packed the few things she’d brought the previous evening.
She got an early breakfast, so she made sure to eat something, before finally leaving the room.
The hallway was silent when she stepped out.
Everything felt... normal again.
For the first time since the gala, Emilia allowed herself to believe the worst of it was behind her.
The champagne accident surfaced quietly at the edge of her thoughts.
She remembered the cold drink soaking through the front of her gown, the startled faces around her, and then, that smile.
She swallowed softly as the memory of the person who had looked at her from across the ballroom resurfaced.
Her fingers unconsciously rubbed over her forearms.
Adrian’s scars flashed across her mind.
The cigarette burns, and the old wounds that had long since healed, but never truly disappeared.
She swallowed.
His mother had been capable of hurting her own child without remorse. She had left marks that years hadn’t managed to erase.
Compared to that, perhaps someone smiling after a spilled drink meant nothing at all. Perhaps she had simply been looking in the wrong direction at the wrong time.
Perhaps the smile hadn’t even been meant for her. She let out a slow breath and lowered her hands.
Not everything was connected to Adrian, and not every unsettling glance carried a hidden meaning.
She wanted to believe that.
She truly did.
So, with quiet determination, Emilia pushed the memory back to where she’d been trying to keep it since the gala.
Today was Monday.
She had lectures to attend, assignments to finish, and an ordinary life waiting for her. She intended to hold on to that normality for as long as it would let her.
The elevator chimed softly.
She stopped in front of the doors and reached toward the call button.
Her fingertip hovered only inches away.
"Emilia."
The voice came from somewhere behind her.
Warm, yet unfamiliar, and unexpected. Every muscle in her body locked. Her heartbeat stopped for one impossible second.
Slowly, she froze.
