The voice came from somewhere behind her.

"Emilia?"

She froze. Not because she recognised the voice, but because she didn’t.

For one impossible heartbeat, every thought that had been calmly arranged inside her mind scattered in different directions.

Had someone seen Adrian leave?

Had someone come out of another suite?

Had they—

She slowly lowered her hand from the elevator button before turning around.

A young man stood several feet away in the quiet corridor.

He looked to be about her age.

His dark hair fell naturally across his forehead, just untidy enough to look effortless, while his warm brown eyes regarded her with open curiosity rather than suspicion.

He was tall, though nowhere near Adrian’s height, with an athletic build hidden beneath a charcoal sweatshirt and dark jeans. A backpack rested over one shoulder, and a room key card hung loosely between his fingers.

His features were pleasant in an understated way. He had straight nose, defined jaw, and the kind of smile that arrived cautiously, as though he wasn’t entirely sure it would be welcomed.

"Hi."

Emilia blinked. "Hi." She responded cautiously.

The young man rubbed the back of his neck. "I wasn’t trying to scare you."

Emilia swallowed. She cleared her throat, and readjusted her footings. "You didn’t." She heard how quickly she’d answered and mentally corrected herself. "You just... surprised me."

His smile became a little easier. "I thought so."

Silence stretched between them. His gaze shifted briefly toward the suite door behind her.

His gaze did not rest long enough on the door to seem intrusive but it was just enough for Emilia’s stomach to tighten.

Without thinking, she glanced over her shoulder as well.

The door remained firmly closed.

Nothing about it suggested someone had left earlier. She swallowed, as if to remind herself that Adrian left two hours ago.

When she turned back, the young man was already looking at her again.

"I was just wondering..." he said carefully. "What are you doing here?"

The question landed lightly. Almost casually. Yet it made her heartbeat stumble.

She forced herself to smile. "I stayed here last night."

He nodded once. "That makes sense."

He didn’t ask another question, didn’t ask whether she had been alone, and didn’t ask whose suite it had been.

To Emilia’s quiet relief, he simply extended a hand.

"I should introduce myself."

She looked at it before accepting the handshake.

"I’m Ethan." His grip was brief and polite. "We’re in the same department."

Emilia searched his face. Recognition stubbornly refused to come.

"I’m sorry..." She apologised softly, searching his eyes now.

He laughed softly. "I know." He stared down at her hand briefly. "I’ve seen you around plenty of times."

His smile remained good-natured. "You’ve just never noticed me."

Heat crept into Emilia’s cheeks. "I’m really sorry."

"Don’t be." He shrugged. "You usually look like you’re trying to get from one lecture to the next before someone invents another assignment."

Despite herself, she laughed. "That’s... surprisingly accurate."

"I thought so." He returned her laugh with a mildly nervous one.

The elevator chimed, and its doors slid open between them.

Ethan gestured politely. "After you."

Emilia stepped inside.

He followed a second later, pressing the button for the lobby.

The doors closed.

For a few quiet moments, only the soft hum of the descending lift filled the space.

"So..." Ethan said eventually. "I’ve been meaning to tell you something."

She looked across at him. "What is it?"

He hesitated.

"I wanted to say..." He rubbed the back of his neck again. "I think you’re handling everything a lot better than most people would."

Confusion crossed her face. She raised a brow at him. "I’m not sure I understand."

"I mean after everything that happened." His expression softened. "The rumours, your leave, and Noah."

Emilia looked away for a moment.

The mirrored walls reflected her own uncertain expression.

"I know we don’t really know each other," Ethan continued quietly, "but I still wanted to apologise."

She frowned. "You don’t have anything to apologise for."

"I know." He smiled faintly. "But people from our school weren’t exactly kind." His voice carried genuine regret. "Some believed him."

Emilia said nothing. She simply stared back at her reflection, with no expression showing on her face.

Silence settled once more.

Ethan looked at her. "For what it’s worth..." he went on. "I never believed him."

Emilia finally turned to him again, and met his eyes. She searched his eyes sternly. There wasn’t pity there, only quiet sincerity.

"Thank you," she said softly.

The elevator reached the lobby with a gentle chime. The doors opened, and morning sunlight spilled through the hotel’s glass entrance.

Outside, traffic had already begun to build.

Ethan adjusted the strap of his backpack.

"I’m heading to campus." He smiled. "We could take a cab together."

Emilia shook her head almost immediately. "I already have a cab waiting outside."

"Oh." He nodded without disappointment. "That makes sense."

She gave him a warm smile. "I’ll see you around."

"I hope so."

He stepped aside, allowing her to leave first.

Emilia offered one last polite smile before walking through the revolving doors.

A black sedan waited exactly where Adrian had promised. The driver noticed her immediately and stepped forward to open the rear door.

She climbed inside.

As the car pulled away from the hotel, she glanced absent-mindedly through the rear window.

Ethan was still standing beneath the hotel’s entrance canopy. He simply adjusting his backpack before turning in the opposite direction.

....

Nearly fifty minutes later, Blackwood University buzzed with its usual Monday morning energy.

Students hurried between buildings balancing coffee cups, notebooks and unfinished assignments.

Emilia stepped through the main gates, breathing a little easier.

Today would be normal.

That thought lasted less than thirty seconds.

She spotted Lucy near the entrance to the science building, animatedly waving at someone across the courtyard.

Emilia smiled, realising she was the one Lucy waved at.

She had barely taken another step, when someone crossed into her path from the opposite direction.

"Ethan?"

He stopped, looking pleasantly surprised. He smiled. "Looks like we really do keep running into each other."

Emilia smiled politely.

"So it seems."

For the briefest moment, something about the coincidence lingered. Just enough that, somewhere in the back of her mind, a tiny question quietly refused to disappear.
