Richard Holloway’s office sat at the far end of the administrative wing, tucked behind a corridor few students ever had reason to visit.
The brass nameplate on the oak door had dulled a bit with age, but the office behind it remained exactly as Adrian remembered.
There was a floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, a leather sofa that had seen better decades, a framed photographs of university graduations, academic conferences, and one faded hunting trip from years ago.
The scent of old paper mixed with oak and a hint of expensive Scotch filled the office, remaining a familiar scent.
Richard Holloway stood by the window, with one hand tucked into his pocket while the other swirled amber liquid inside a crystal tumbler.
His silver hair had thinned over the years, but his posture remained straight, and his eyes as perceptive as ever.
Without turning around, he spoke. "You’re late." He reprimanded.
"I said ten." Adruan recalled with a quiet hum.
Richard glanced at the grandfather clock. "It’s ten-oh-three."
Adrian said nothing.
Richard turned. "Come in."
Adrian walked in, and closed the door behind him.
The older man studied him for a long moment. "You look... you look relaxed. What’s going on?"
Adrian’s expression softened. "I slept."
Richard raised a suprised brow at Adrian, and then silence settled between them.
Richard crossed the room and placed the bottle of Scotch back onto the cabinet.
"You don’t visit unless something’s bothering you."
Adrian remained standing. "There is... someone."
Richard paused. "That’s new." He murmured, his gaze sharpening more than ever.
Adrian looked away.
Richard laughed under his breath.
"I’ve known you since you were a teenager. You avoided relationships like they carried contagious diseases."
"This is different."
"I assumed as much." Richard gestured toward the chair opposite his desk. "Sit."
Adrian obeyed.
Richard lowered himself into his own chair before taking another sip of his drink. He stared at Adrian through the rim of the glass, and asked.
"Still don’t drink? Now even a sip?"
Adrian stared at the glass deeply. His expression darkened. "I had a drink a little over a month ago." He cleared his throat, and met Richard’s eyes. "The day I met the person I’m about to speak of."
"Tell me."
Adrian considered his next words carefully. "I met someone. She’s a student."
Ricahard paised for a second, then shrugged. "You don’t need to tell me who."
"I won’t."
Richard nodded. "What do you want to know?"
Adrian rested his forearms on his knees. "The consequences."
Richard’s expression hardened almost instantly. He already understood. He slowly set his glass onto the desk.
"My advice?" He folded his hands. "Stay away from her." He shook his head with a smll thought. "Be professional."
Adrian didn’t respond.
Richard picked up his Scotch again.
"Wait." He narrowed his eyes. "Hold on." He pointed the glass toward Adrian. "Is she at least twenty?"
Adrian frowned.
Richard continued before he could answer.
"Tell me you’re not involved with an eighteen-year-old freshman."
"She’s twenty." Adrian answered immediately, irritated. "And don’t be vile."
Richard exhaled. "That’s one concern off the list." He leaned back. "Have you actually read the university’s non-fraternization policy?"
"I helped draft part of the faculty revisions."
"Then you already know the answer."
Richard’s voice sharpened.
"Everything we’ve covered up to get you here could be destroyed if anyone discovers you’re involved with a student."
"We’re not in a relationship."
"Keep it that way."
His tone left no room for interpretation. "No dating, and no sexual relationship. No ’it’s consensual anyway.’" He held Adrian’s gaze. "Nothing."
The office room fell silent.
Adrian stared at the grain of the wooden desk. After several moments, he finally spoke. "What if it’s only for a short while?"
Richard blinked, then stared. "Are you kidding me, Adrian?"
"Would a short relationship violate the policy or not?" Adrian asked quietly.
Richard let out a humorless laugh. "You really have to ask?"
Adrian said nothing.
Richard sighed. "Yes, it would." He leaned forward. "Given your reputation, most people wouldn’t hesitate to assume she’s just another—" He stopped himself too late. "...another toy."
Adrian’s chair scraped sharply across the floor as he stood. His jaw tightened. "Don’t call her that." He warned.
His eyes darkened.
Richard immediately lifted both hands. "All right." He dropped his hands. "I take it back. I’m not talking about her." He pointed at Adrian. "I’m talking about how everyone else would see the situation."
The tension lingered another few seconds before Adrian slowly sat again. He rubbed a hand across his jaw.
"What happens to her?"
Richard answered without hesitation. "For starters... She could lose her scholarship."
Adrian’s expression tightened.
"If the university concluded she received preferential treatment because of your position, any academic awards or funding connected to that perception could be reviewed."
He continued quietly.
"Her academic reputation would suffer, and faculty recommendations would become complicated. Future employers might question whether her achievements were earned."
He paused.
"And if the matter became public..."
He didn’t need to finish.
Adrian already understood.
"If things became catastrophic," Richard said carefully, "there is one path that protects her more than you."
Adrian looked up readily.
"She reports you."
The words landed heavily.
"She tells the university the relationship was a mistake, that she wants it to end, and that you’ve continued to pursue or pressure her."
Richard sighed.
"The investigation would focus on you. The institution would have every reason to shield the student."
Richard rubbed a hand on his forehead. "If she goes further as saying you harassed her to be with you, the consequences would fall entirely on the faculty member with not even a single glance going over to her."
Adrian swallowed hard. His fingers slid through his hair before he rubbed a hand over his face.
"It won’t get that bad." He told himself more than Richard.
Richard watched him carefully.
Adrian’s fist clenched shut. "I’ll make sure she never carries the consequences."
"That’s the problem, Adrian." Richard too a light sip from his glass again. "You don’t get to decide that."
Another silence settled between them
Finally Adrian added, "Any lawsuit involving the university would expose everything."
Richard nodded once. "It would."
He looked toward the closed office door. "And once investigators start looking for evidence..." His voice grew quiet. "...all they need to do is find it."
