The morning sunlight arrived gently.

Golden rays slipped through the narrow gap between the brown curtains, painting soft lines across the bedroom floor before slowly climbing the edge of the bed.

Emilia stirred softly because of the steady warmth surrounding her. She frowned sleepily, nestling deeper before realizing she wasn’t holding a pillow.

Her cheek rested against someone’s chest.

A slow heartbeat echoed beneath her ear.

She blinked, then smiled.

Adrian.

One of his arms remained wrapped securely around her waist, possessively, while the other rested lazily beneath the pillow supporting her head.

He hadn’t moved.

She lifted her head slightly, and his grey eyes met her green eyes instantly. He’d already been awake.

"Good morning," she whispered, her voice still rough from sleep.

"Morning." He returned tenderly, with his eyes fixed on her.

Emilia pushed upward sightly. "You’ve been awake?"

"For a while now."

She frowned. "Were you... watching me?"

"I was."

There wasn’t the slightest embarrassment in his answer.

Emilia laughed quietly, rubbing one sleepy eye. "That’s a little creepy." She murmured beneath her breath.

"That’s if I have a saw with me."

She shook her head, smiling into his chest. Another beat of silence passed between them.

Adrian ran this index finger around her face, slowly tracing the curves of her perfect features. "You smile in your sleep."

She snorted fondly. "I do not."

"You do."

She looked up suspiciously. His thumb brushed slowly across her lips, then traced her curves down to her waist.

"What was I smiling about?" Emilia asked him, moving closer to him, her bare body pressing against his.

Adrian drew an imaginary shape at the back of her waist, before drawing the duvet highter, to cover her up. "I don’t know." He finally responded.

He looked at her for another quiet second.

"But..." A faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. "...I liked seeing it."

Something warm bloomed inside her chest. She lowered her gaze, suddenly shy. "Turn around."

He studied her. "Why?"

"I want to see your tattoos."

Without another question, Adrian gently freed her from his arms, and rolled onto his stomach.

The morning light slid across the broad expanse of his ripped back.

Emilia forgot to breathe.

She had noticed the tattoos before. She’d just never really looked. Not like this, this up close.

Black ink stretched across his shoulders, spine, ribs, and down to his waistline. Every piece seemingly flow naturally into the next.

None of them looked random.

They looked chosen.

She reached out hesitantly. Her fingertips barely brushed his shoulder blade.

He didn’t flinch. Instead, his breathing seemed to settle even more.

Emilia lightly drew a scratch of her finver across his shoulder blade. Not to hurt him, but to tease him.

His back muscles rippled beneath her touch. Smiling, she leaned down, and dropped a tender fluttering kiss on his shoulder blade.

She dropped another on his spine, then one more on his ribs. Adrian said nothing. He simply relaxed.

Slowly, she began tracing invisible circles over the artwork.

"This one..." She followed the outline of a drawing with blood dripping down a rose. "...what does it mean?"

"My father."

She looked up. "Your father?"

"He...." Adrian paused for a moment. He took in a soft breath. "I never met him. All I know was how he got my mum pregnant at 14."

Emilia blinked rapidly, shocked. She never saw that coming.

"It’s more like she’s the rose..." He went on. "And when he got into her life, she began to bleed."

Adrian lifted his head lightly, and stared at Emilia over his shoulder. "Notice how the rose doesn’t have thrones?"

Emilia swallowed forcefully, and nodded.

Adrian nodded, and stared straight ahead again. "That’s because she took off the thrones, and gave him her full potential. He left her bleeding."

Emilia’s fingers trembled, and she went silent.

Adrian turned over. He took her hand in his, and kissed her knuckles. "My tattoos aren’t attractive. We should look at them some other time."

Emilia snapped back to reality. "I’m fine."

Adrian searched her eyes. "Are you sure?" He asked tenderly, spelling himself into a sitting position.

Emilia nodded, and gave him a small smile. "I’m fine, really." She nervously reached for her hair, and tied it into a rough bun.

"Emilia...."

Emilia cut him off. "Can we continue?" she gave him a tender smile. "I’m fine. I just didn’t see that coming."

Adrian gave her a nod of acceptance, and laid back on the bed, and rolled over.

Emilia’s fingers wandered lower to a mountain range.

"And these?"

"It’s a promise."

"What promise?"

"Just to keep climbing. Rough background."

She smiled softly now, and her eyes softened affectionately. Her fingers continued their slow journey until they stopped again.

Near the left side of his back, there was a tiny bird inside a cage. Unlike every other tattoo, this one felt sad. Sadder than the first for some reason.

She gently traced the bars with her fingertip.

"What about this one?"

Adrian went silent. Long enough this time that she almost apologized.

Then, just when she was about to clear her throat, and apologise, he answered quietly. "My mother."

She stopped moving altogether. "What does it mean?"

His eyes turned to the window, and remained there. "She loved birds." He paused lightly, and continued. "She said they should never live in cages."

Emilia listened. She didn’t give any reaction, to stop him from speaking.

"When she died..." He swallowed almost imperceptibly. "...I realized she’d spent most of her life inside one."

Silence filled the room.

Emilia’s chest tightened.

She leaned down without saying anything and pressed a gentle kiss between his shoulder blades.

She didn’t ask another question again. She didn’t need to.

After another minute, Adrian rolled back onto his side. "You’ve gone quiet."

She smiled sadly.

They stayed there for another few peaceful minutes before Emilia finally climbed out of bed.

She reached for the nearest piece of clothing.

His black shirt, and then she slipped it over her head. The hem fell almost to the middle of her thighs.

She looked down. "I’ve disappeared."

Adrian watched her with quiet amusement. "It suits you."

She spread her arms dramatically. "I look like a child wearing her father’s clothes."

"You look beautiful."

She paused. "You’re unfair."

He stood from the bed and pulled on his grey sweatpants.

Without the expensive suits, the polished shoes, or the perfectly fitted jackets, he looked strangely ordinary.

She liked this version more. It felt like one only she was allowed to see. Then her gaze drifted toward the small navy gift bag resting on the bedside table.

She walked over slowly.

Adrian didn’t interrupt. She picked it up carefully. It was still unopened.

For a moment, she simply held it. Then she crossed to her wardrobe, unlocked it, and placed the little bag carefully on the highest shelf.

She locked the wardrobe again.

Adrian watched her.

"You’re still not opening it."

She smiled over her shoulder. "I want to."

"Then why not?"

"Because..." She rested her hand against the wardrobe door. "...if I open it, eventually I’ll have to put it away."

She looked back at him. "I’m not ready for my birthday to be over."

A softness settled over Adrian’s expression that words couldn’t quite capture. Without saying anything else, he walked over to her.

Together, they stripped the bed, and replaced the mattress, quietly as they wordlessly wrestled the fitted sheet from one stubborn corner of the mattress.

Emilia laughed when he pulled the mattress from her grip with a straight face. He moved over to her side of the bed, and tucked it in.

She laughed so hard she nearly fell backward, and Adrian caught her effortlessly before she hit the floor.
