Adrian caught her effortlessly before she could fall.
One arm settled firmly around her waist while the other steadied her back, keeping her balanced against him.
For a brief second, neither of them moved.
Emilia looked up. Her laugh died down on her lips, but it remained dancing in her eyes.
Morning sunlight caught the silver in his eyes, softening them in a way she doubted anyone else ever saw.
She smiled.
Adrian looked down at her without saying anything. His hand remained secure at the small of her back.
"You laugh a lot more now," he observed quietly.
Emilia’s smile widened. She tilted her head thoughtfully. "I think that’s your fault."
"I’ll take responsibility."
She laughed again, the sound was light enough to fill the room. Then awareness slowly crept back in.
She realized exactly how close they still were. Her cheeks warmed.
"Right."
She cleared her throat awkwardly before taking a careful step backward, slipping out of his arms.
Instinctively, both hands reached for the hem of the oversized black shirt she wore.
She tugged it lower over her thighs even though it already reached halfway down them. Her fingers fussed with the fabric for another second.
"You should get going."
Adrian’s eyebrow lifted. "It’s just eight in the morning, Emilia."
He glanced lazily toward the bedroom window he’d climbed through hours earlier. "No one else is coming."
Emilia tucked a loose strand of her hair that now flowed behind her back after the fall behind her ear before looking around her room for absolutely no reason.
It wasn’t the room she was checking.
It was herself. She wasn’t used to this. To waking up beside someone. To having someone standing comfortably in her bedroom while morning sunlight spilled across the floor.
The last time he’d been here, he’d stayed the night. Now he was here again, standing comfortably in her room as though he belonged.
A tiny part of her wondered if she was making memories she wouldn’t be able to survive later. If things ever ended... would this room still feel like hers?
"Lucy will probably stop by soon," she said quietly. "We’re going back to campus together."
Adrian studied her for another moment. "So?"
She blinked. "So..."
"If she comes," he continued evenly, "I’ll leave."
She pressed her lips together. "It isn’t that simple."
"It isn’t?"
She shook her head. "You know it isn’t."
Silence settled between them.
Adrian leaned lightly against the edge of the dresser, folding his arms. "Tell me."
Emilia hesitated. "I don’t want anyone asking questions."
"They won’t." He assured her. "I won’t be seen."
She sighed. "And what exactly am I supposed to tell them if they catch a sniff of you?"
"Don’t respond."
She stared at him. "You make everything sound so easy." Her gaze fell to the floor. "I’m a scholarship student. The last thing I’ll want to do is destroy my education using my hands."
He uncrossed his arms with understanding. "Come here."
Emilia frowned. She lifted her gaze back to him. "What?"
"Come here."
She hesitated for exactly two seconds before walking toward him.
He waited until she stopped in front of him. Close enough that she had to tilt her head to meet his eyes.
"You’ve been thinking too much."
"I’ve been practical." Emilia unconsciously pouted her lips. "You’re in that school for your company. I won’t want you ending everything because of a mistake this might_"
Adrian placed his thumb on her lips, cutting her off. "Shuuu." He murmured, rubbing her lower lip now. "Don’t ever call this a mistake."
She opened her mouth to protest, but nothing came out. Because he wasn’t wrong.
Her fingers twisted together in front of her.
"I just..." She searched for the right words. "I don’t want to make your life harder."
"You won’t."
"I don’t want people connecting us."
"They won’t."
"What if they do?"
He took his thumb off her lips. "What if they don’t?"
She looked away.
He gently caught her chin between his fingers, guiding her face back toward him.
"You always prepare for the worst."
"I like being prepared." She murmured quietly. "It usually keeps me out of trouble."
"It also keeps you worried."
Her shoulders dropped a little.
"Let me worry about this." There was no judgment in his voice, only understanding. "If this ever affects your education or your life, I’ll fix it."
Her voice had become almost embarrassingly quiet. "I think..." She laughed softly at herself. "I think we should go back to changing the mattress."
Adrian’s expression softened completely. Without another word, he stepped closer.
His hand brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear before settling lightly against her cheek.
He leaned down, and pressed his lips on hers. Emilia shut her eyes, and parted her lips. The kiss was slow, and unhurried.
The kiss was filled with reassurance.
Emilia felt herself melting into it before she even realized she’d closed her eyes. When they finally drew apart, neither of them spoke immediately.
Adrian rested his forehead briefly against hers before lifting both hands to cradle her face.
His thumbs brushed lightly beneath her eyes. He gently raised her chin until she was looking directly at him.
"Relax, okay?" His voice was quiet, and certain. Steady enough for both of them.
Emilia searched his eyes for another second, then she nodded. "Okay."
A small smile appeared at the corner of his mouth. He leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss against the top of her head.
Then he wrapped both arms around her again, drawing her comfortably against his chest.
She sighed into the embrace without realizing it.
Adrian rested his chin lightly on top of her head.
For a while, the room became perfectly still.
Then he spoke again. "We both have to want this..." He paused, his voice barely above a whisper. "...for this to work."
Emilia tightened her arms around him. "I do want this."
"I know."
"And you?"
Instead of answering immediately, he simply held her a little closer.
She smiled against his chest. "I’ll take that as a yes."
A quiet chuckle rumbled beneath her ear.
Just then, they both heard a knock.
"Emilia?"
Her mother’s cheerful voice drifted through the bedroom door. "You two should probably start freshening up."
Emilia’s eyes flew open.
She froze, then she slowly looked up at Adrian.
He looked back at her.
For one heartbeat, neither of them moved, or speak.
