The helicopter wasn’t leaving yet.

That was the first thing Emilia learned after Adrian led her away from the helipad. Apparently, the flight had been arranged for the evening.

Which meant she had several hours to figure out where exactly he’d brought her, and several hours to annoy him about it.

She stopped walking.

Adrian, who had already taken several steps ahead, turned around.

"What is it?"

Emilia pointed toward the helicopter behind them. "We’re not going up yet?"

"Not yet."

She stared at him. "Then why did you make me think we were going immediately?"

Adrian’s mouth twitched. "The evening view would be more appreciated. Trust me."

He turned and continued walking.

Emilia hurried after him. Adrian slowed down, when he heard her footsteps behind him.

She stopped when she noticed he slowed down. This time, he kept walking.

"Adrian!" She called him.

A quiet laugh escaped him.

"Come on." He urged, still smiling. "You should see inside."

Emilia shook her head and followed.

The estate was even more impressive from inside.

From the outside, she’d noticed the gardens first, the manicured lawns, stone pathways, fountains and towering trees.

Inside, everything became quieter.

The entrance hall stretched beneath a high ceiling supported by dark wooden beams. Tall windows allowed the morning sunlight to pour across the polished floor. Paintings occupied several sections of the walls, but none of them felt excessive.

Everything had been chosen carefully.

Emilia slowed as she walked.

Her trainers made barely any sound against the floor. She looked left, rhen right, and then up.

Adrian noticed. "Are you expecting the walls to move?" He teased.

She looked at him. "Umm... this is a beautiful masterpiece. Way too beautiful to own."

He glanced sideways, and then looked around hn with a small smile. "I’m sure I felt that way when I came here the first time."

She looked around again. "Do you own this entire place?" She asked quietly.

"Part of it."

He extended his hand. "Come."

Emilia looked at his hand for a second before taking it. His fingers closed gently around hers, and they walked deeper into the estate.

They passed several corridors before Adrian eventually turned toward a quieter hallway.

The further they went, the less the estate seemed like a public space.

The hallway narrowed, and the decorations became simpler. There were fewer paintings, and fewer doors now.

Almost no staff.

Eventually, Adrian stopped in front of a large double door. He reached for the handle, and oopened it.

Emilia stepped inside, then stopped slowly.

Her mouth parted slightly.

This wasn’t what she’d expected. Not even remotely.

She had somehow imagined Adrian’s private room to be dark. Since the one she had ever seen was also dark.

Maybe black walls as usua, heavy furniture, dark wooden floors, something severe and masculine, and something that looked exactly like him.

Instead, sunlight flooded the room.

The curtains were a soft cream, pulled halfway open across enormous windows overlooking the eastern gardens.

The walls were painted in a warm ivory.

There were bookshelves along one wall, filled with books arranged in neat rows. A large cream rug covered most of the floor.

And in the center of the room stood a bed covered in jade-green bedding. The color caught the morning sunlight beautifully.

Emilia slowly walked inside.

She turned in a small circle.

Adrian closed the door behind them.

She looked at him.

"This is..." She searched for the word. "Different."

He chuckled. "Different from what?" He raised a brow at her, genuinely interested to know why she thought of that.

"I don’t know." She gestured around. "I expected..."

"What?"

"Something darker."

His eyebrow lifted. "Why?"

"Because you’re always dressed in black."

He looked down at his clothes. "Not always."

Adrian walked toward her.

Emilia took another step backward.

"Don’t." He continued.

"Don’t what?" She asked, with a harness smile raising the corners of her lips.

"Don’t look at me like that."

Emilia raised a brow at him. "Like what?"

"Like you’re about to do something." His mouth curved. "What is it you want to do to me? Huh?"

She laughed and took another step back.

He reached her, and pulled her i to his arms. One hand settled gently around her waist.

Emilia’s laughter immediately became softer. "Adrian."

"Hm?"

"You said we’d explore."

"We are."

"You’re not exploring."

"I’m changing the itinerary."

She laughed again. "You can’t just—"

He pulled her closer, cutting her words off. Her hands instinctively settled against his chest.

She looked up at him. He was already looking at her. The teasing disappeared from his expression.

His thumb moved slowly across her waist.

Emilia’s smile softened. "I don’t really need to ride an helicopter for a surprise."

"You don’t wanna know what I call a surprise."

Her heart warmed. "You’re making it difficult for me to complain."

He gave her a teasing expression, as he pulled her much closer. "I wasn’t aware you were trying."

She laughed.

Adrian leaned down, and Emilia’s hands tightened lightly against his shirt.

Their faces moved closer.

She could already feel his breath against her lips. She smiled, and shut her eyes, ready to kiss him.

Then—

"Adrian." The voice came from the doorway, sweet, and soft.

Adrian stopped. His eyes opened.

Emilia blinked.

He slowly turned his head toward the door.

A woman stood there.

She was elegant without looking like she had tried to be.

Her sandy coloured hair fell softly around her shoulders, streaked with silver that only made her look more graceful. She wore a pale blouse tucked into dark trousers, and her expression was warm.

The moment her eyes landed on Adrian, her entire face brightened.

"Mother."

Emilia froze.

The woman smiled, and she walked toward him.

"I never thought you’d come here anytime soon."

Adrian’s expression changed. It was subtle, but Emilia saw it. The guardedness she’d become accustomed to seeing in him disappeared.

He suddenly looked younger, and softer.

The woman reached him and wrapped her arms around him.

Adrian aoflty let go of Emilia, and immediately returned the hug. His hand settled against her back.

He leaned forward and kissed her cheek.

Emilia stared. She couldn’t move. She couldn’t even process what she was seeing.

Mother? He’d called her mother.

But... his mother was dead. He had told her. He’d spoken about her with the kind of grief that didn’t leave room for misunderstanding.

The rose tattoo, the cigarette burns, and the bird inside the cage.

His mother.

Emilia remembered the way Adrian had spoken about her. Yet here he was, holding a woman who was apparently his mother.

The woman pulled away first.

Her hands remained on his arms.

"You’ve gotten thinner."

Adrian gave her a faint smile. "I’m fine."

"You always say that."

"I’m still fine."

She studied his face. "You’re lying."

Adrian shook his head.

She smiled. "Come here."

She touched his cheek.

Adrian allowed her.

Emilia watched silently. Something about the exchange felt so intimate. It was familial, real, and comfortable.

The woman finally noticed Emilia.

Her eyes shifted toward her. The warmth in her expression didn’t disappear. Instead, curiosity entered it.

She looked at Emilia, then at Adrian. Then back at Emilia.

Adrian noticed.

He was the first to pull completely away from the embrace.

He turned toward Emilia.

For the first time since the woman entered the room, Emilia realized Adrian had noticed the confusion written all over her face.

His expression softened.

"Emilia."

She looked at him.

He took one step toward her. "Come here."

She didn’t move. Not because she didn’t want to, but because she was still trying to understand.

Adrian glanced toward the woman, then back to Emilia.

"This is Sophie." He introduced her.

Sophie smiled gently. "Hello, sweetheart."

Emilia swallowed. "Hi." She forced out. Her voice came out quieter than she intended.

Adrian continued. "She’s my mother."

Emilia’s eyes widened slightly.

Sophie noticed. She looked between them.

Adrian nodded. "I know what you’re thinking."

Emilia looked at him.

He sighed softly. "I should have explained."

She nodded slowly. "Yes. She’s your Mum?"

Sophie stepped closer. "Adrian hasn’t told you?"

"No." Adrian rubbed the bridge of his nose. "I didn’t think it would come up."

Emilia stared at him.

Sophie laughed softly. The sound somehow made the room feel warmer.

Emilia looked at her again. She couldn’t help herself. "But..."

She hesitated.

Sophie waited.

"You said..." Her eyes moved toward Adrian. "You told me your mother died."
