The room became quiet.
Adrian’s expression never changed. His eyes simply tightened. "I did."
Emilia looked confused.
Sophie reached out and gently touched Adrian’s arm. "It’s okay."
Adrian nodded. Then he looked directly at Emilia. "My biological mother died."
Emilia’s breath caught.
Sophie remained beside him.
Adrian continued quietly. "Sophie isn’t my biological mother."
Emilia’s eyes shifted toward her.
"She’s my adoptive mother."
Sophie smiled.
"He only started calling me Mother recently." She chuckled. "When he found out I have Leukemia."
Emilia blinked. "Leukemia?"
Sophie nodded, still smiling softly. As if she was speaking of just the weather. "I adopted him when he was twelve."
Adrian’s jaw tightened slightly.
Sophie noticed. She gave his arm another gentle squeeze. "He doesn’t like talking about those years."
Emilia looked at Adrian.
His eyes met hers.
Sophie smiled. "I think I should leave you two alone."
Adrian immediately looked at her. "Mother."
She tured to him readily, already attentive. "What?"
"You just walked in."
She gave Emilia a quick glance. "And interrupted something."
Emilia’s face heated instantly.
Sophie smiled innocently. "I’ll see you later."
She turned toward the door. Then paused. Sophie gave Adrian a knowing look.
"Drop by often."
Adrian didn’t respond to that.
She laughed, and faced her hand. "All right. I’ll go."
She stepped out. Before closing the door, she glanced back one final time.
"Don’t disappear for another six months."
Adrian shook his head this time. "I won’t."
The door closed, and silence returned into the room. Emilia stood still. Adrian looked at her, and she looked back.
Neither spoke for several seconds.
Finally, Emilia folded her arms. "Your mother isn’t dead."
"My biological mother is."
"But Sophie..."
"My adoptive mother."
Emilia nodded slowly. She looked toward the closed door. "She seems nice."
"She is."
"She hugged you."
Adrian’s eyebrow lifted. "She’s my mother."
"I know." Emilia smiled faintly. "I just didn’t expect it."
"Neither did I."
She looked at him.
"I didn’t expect her being here."
Emilia’s eyebrows rose. "So you didn’t even know she was coming?"
"No."
"Then why did you bring me here?"
Adrian looked around the room. "Because this is where I wanted to bring you."
She stared at him.
"Even though your mother could walk in?"
"I didn’t expect her to." Adrian’s expression remained calm.
Emilia laughed softly, covering her lips with her palm.
"What’s funny?"
"You."
"Me?"
"You’re supposed to know everything."
"I don’t."
"You always act like you do."
"I never said that."
"You don’t have to."
He smiled.
Emilia walked toward the window.
She looked outside. The gardens stretched endlessly beneath the afternoon sunlight. For a moment, she was quiet.
She turned around.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Anything."
"Why did you never tell me about Sophie?"
Adrian’s expression became thoughtful. "Because I don’t talk about my family easily. Not the living ones, at least."
Emilia nodded.
He walked toward her. "I’ve spent years keeping certain parts of my life separate."
"From everyone?"
"Mostly."
She looked down at the garden again.
"And me?"
He stopped in front of her. "It’s complicated. I do promise to truthfully answer every question you ask."
Her eyes lifted, and her chest tightened. She smiled. "That’s a little scary."
His hand found hers, and his fingers intertwined with hers. He drew her closer again, and wrapped her in his arms.
This time, she didn’t step away.
Her arms slipped around his waist. She rested her cheek against his chest. For a few moments, neither spoke.
Emilia closed her eyes.
Adrian rested his chin lightly against the top of her head. His arms tightened around her.
Emilia clutched a small fraction of his shirt.
"I think we should both spend time with different people."
Adrian went still. The arm around her waist stopped moving. Even his breathing seemed to change.
Emilia noticed immediately.
She lifted her head from his chest. "A night," she added quickly. "Or perhaps... a week."
Adrian looked down at her. His expression was unreadable. "Why?" He asked.
Emilia swallowed. "I don’t know."
"You do."
She looked away.
Adrian didn’t force her to meet his eyes. He simply waited.
Emilia took a slow breath. "I feel like I’m getting too involved in your personal life."
His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.
She continued before she could lose her nerve.
"Today I met your mother. I saw this part of your life that I didn’t even know existed." She gave a small, nervous laugh. "And suddenly I’m standing in your room, holding you, while your mother knows my name."
Adrian said nothing.
"It doesn’t feel casual anymore."
His eyes remained on her.
"And we agreed this was supposed to be temporary," she whispered. "Four months. That’s it."
"Emilia."
She shook her head gently. "Let me finish."
He fell silent again.
She looked down at the floor. "I think I need to remind myself that I can still do this casually."
His brow furrowed. "Do what?"
She hesitated. "Flings."
Adrian’s expression didn’t change.
"I need someone else to remind me that I can still have a life outside of this." She forced a small smile. "Someone who doesn’t make me want to know everything about him."
His gaze lowered briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes. "And you think another man will do that?"
She shook her head, and met his gaze. "I don’t know."
"Then why suggest it?"
"Because I’m scared."
His expression softened slightly. "Of me?"
"No." She shook her head again. "Of this."
She placed a hand against his chest. "You’re becoming too important to me."
For the first time, something flickered across his face. Surprise. It disappeared so quickly she almost convinced herself she’d imagined it.
Emilia swallowed.
"I don’t want to wake up four months from now and realize I’ve built my entire life around something that was never supposed to last."
Adrian stared at her.
She waited, and he didn’t answer.
The silence stretched.
Emilia’s fingers slowly loosened from his shirt.
She gave a tiny nod, forcing herself to smile. "Okay."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed slightly.
"I’ll take that as a yes." She murmured, as she stepped away from him.
His arms fell to his sides.
For a moment, neither of them moved.
Emilia turned toward the window again, pretending the gardens were suddenly very interesting.
Behind her, Adrian remained exactly where she had left him.
