By eight that evening, the estate had changed completely.
The warmth of the afternoon disappeared beneath a deep blue sky. The gardens that had looked almost impossibly green in the daylight were now washed in soft pools of golden light from the lamps lining the stone pathways.
The fountains still moved. The trees still whispered whenever the wind passed through them.
Everything felt quieter.
Emilia stood near one of the tall windows in Adrian’s room, watching the last traces of daylight disappear beyond the horizon.
She had spent most of the afternoon pretending she wasn’t thinking about what she’d said earlier.
About needing space, about wanting other people, about flings, and about the fact that Adrian had barely responded.
He hadn’t argued. He hadn’t tried to convince her otherwise. He hadn’t even asked her to reconsider.
Somehow, that had bothered her more than if he had.
She heard the bedroom door open behind her.
She turned.
Adrian stood in the doorway.
He had changed.
His sleeves were rolled neatly to his forearms, and his dark trousers were paired with a simple black shirt. He looked exactly like himself again. Composed, quiet, and impossible to read.
His eyes found hers. "The helicopter is ready."
Emilia’s stomach fluttered. She looked toward the window. "It really is eight already?"
He nodded.
She smiled. "I thought you were going to cancel."
"I wouldn’t."
There was something about the way he said it that made her smile disappear for a second.
He crossed the room.
When he reached her, he held out a coat. "Here."
She looked at it. "What’s this?"
"My coat."
"I can see that."
His eyebrow lifted. "It’s cold outside."
"I have a jacket."
"Put this on too."
She looked at him for a moment, and then, she slipped her arms into the coat.
It was too large for her.
The sleeves covered part of her hands, and the fabric carried the faintest trace of his cologne.
She pulled it closer around herself.
Adrian watched her for a moment, and his eyes softened. He reached forward and gently folded the collar around her neck.
His fingers lingered for barely a second.
"Better."
Emilia looked down at herself. "I look like I’m wearing a tent."
He said nothing.
She looked back up at him, waiting for him to say something. However, Adrian turned toward the door. "Come on."
Emilia followed. He wasn’t speaking much, but she wouldn’t dwell on that. They walked through the quiet corridors together.
This time, she didn’t ask questions. The anticipation was already sitting inside her chest.
When they stepped outside, the cool evening air touched her face.
Emilia inhaled deeply.
The sky was almost completely dark now. Above them, the first stars had begun to appear.
She looked up.
Adrian glanced at her. She was staring at the sky. He watched her for a moment before looking ahead again.
They continued toward the helipad.
The path was illuminated by small lights embedded along the ground, creating a soft trail through the gardens.
Emilia walked slightly ahead, then she stopped.
The helicopter was waiting.
This time, its lights were on.
The dark body of the aircraft reflected the surrounding lights, making it look almost unreal against the night.
The rotors began turning slowly.
The sound grew gradually louder.
Emilia stared at in with more awe.
She had seen it earlier. Yet somehow, seeing it beneath the night sky made it feel completely different.
"Adrian."
"Hm?"
She pointed. "It looks really beautiful."
He looked at the helicopter, then at her. "It does."
She turned toward him. For some reason, she smiled even if he wasn’t speaking much.
"You weren’t even looking at it."
He said nothing.
She understood. He had been looking at her. Her cheeks warmed.
"Come on." He extended his hand.
Emilia looked at it, then she placed hers in his. His fingers closed around hers. The moment they started walking again, the helicopter seemed to grow louder.
A pilot stood beside it.
He wore a black uniform, gloves, and a perfect posture.
Even beneath the artificial lights, he looked completely unbothered by the machine roaring behind him.
When Adrian approached, the pilot inclined his head.
"Good evening, sir."
"Evening, Kelce."
Kelce eyes moved briefly toward Emilia.
"Miss Emilia."
She smiled. "Hi."
"Ready?"
She glanced at Adrian, then back at Kelce.
"I think so."
A faint smile touched the pilot’s face. "That’s usually the correct answer."
Emilia laughed.
Adrian’s mouth twitched.
Kelce stepped aside.
Adrian turned toward Emilia. "Stay close."
"I will."
He placed one hand gently against her back as they approached the helicopter. The wind from the rotors caught her hair immediately.
She laughed, reaching up to hold it down.
Adrian’s hand remained at her back.
He guided her carefully toward the aircraft. For a moment, Emilia simply stood there.
The lights, the sound, and the cool night. The enormous machine waiting for them. It was too beautiful to ignore.
It felt like something that belonged in a movie, and not her life.
She looked at Adrian. "Are you sure this is real?"
He looked at her. "Very."
She smiled. "Okay. Let go in."
He helped her inside.
Emilia climbed into the seat and immediately looked around.
The interior was beautiful. Soft leather seats with muted lighting, and large windows. Everything looked polished without feeling cold.
Adrian climbed in beside her.
The door closed, and the outside noise softened.
For the first time since they arrived, Emilia was completely still. She looked through the window.
The estate stretched beneath them, then the helicopter began to rise.
Her stomach dropped. She instinctively reached for Adrian’s hand. His fingers closed around hers immediately.
He didn’t look at her.
He simply held on.
The ground moved farther away, and the gardens became smaller. The manor shrank beneath them.
Emilia pressed closer to the window.
"Oh my God."
Adrian turned his head.
She was smiling. Not the small smile he had seen throughout the day, or the teasing smile. This one was completely unguarded.
Childlike, and full of wonder.
The helicopter climbed higher.
The estate disappeared beneath them, then the city emerged.
Emilia’s lips parted.
Lights stretched in every direction, and the roads became glowing ribbons. Cars moved along them like tiny sparks.
Buildings rose from the darkness, their windows illuminated one by one.
The city she’d spent her life walking through suddenly looked completely different.
She leaned closer to the glass. "Adrian..."
He looked at her.
"Look."
He did. However, he did not look at the city. He stared at her. She didn’t notice. She was too busy watching the world below.
"There are so many lights."
He nodded.
"I’ve never seen it like this."
"I thought you hadn’t."
She turned toward him. "How often do you do this?"
"Many times."
She frowned teasingly. "Then why does it look like you’re seeing it for the first time?"
His eyes remained on her. "Maybe I am."
