She stared at him, and he looked away toward the window. She laughed softly. "It’s not cool to say things like that."
The sound of her laugh was soft against the quiet hum of the helicopter.
She turned back toward the window.
Below them, the city continued unfolding. A bridge appeared in the distance, illuminated with rows of warm lights.
The river beneath it reflected everything.
Emilia’s eyes widened. "Look at that." She urged, pointing at the river.
Adrian looked. "Beautiful."
She nodded. "Very."
She rested her forehead lightly against the window.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
The helicopter moved steadily through the night. The sky had become completely dark now.
Stars appeared above them, and the city glowed beneath them. Somewhere between the two, Emilia felt as though she had stepped outside her own life.
She had spent so much time worrying about school, grades, money, her scholarship, her future, and Noah.
Everything had always felt so close, and so heavy. But from up here, none of it looked quite as enormous.
She breathed slowly. A light of freedom reflected on her her face. "Adrian?"
"Hm?"
"Thank you."
He turned toward her.
She was still looking outside.
"For what?"
"For this."
He looked through the window. "The helicopter?" He asked, genuinely curious.
She smiled. "No." She turned toward him. "For making me feel like my birthday didn’t end."
Something changed in his expression. Very slightly.
He leaned back into his seat. "I told you."
"What?"
"You can have anything."
She smiled. "I didn’t think you’d mean it literally."
"I did."
Emilia said nothing. Her smile remained, and she looked at him for a few seconds. Then she turned back toward the window.
The silence returned.
She slipped her fingers through his again.
He looked down at their joined hands, then at her. He said nothing, and neither did she. For the next several minutes, Adrian simply watched her.
He watched the way her eyes followed the roads. The way she smiled whenever another cluster of lights appeared, and the way she leaned closer whenever the helicopter changed direction.
He watched the way she occasionally whispered small words of amazement beneath her breath.
She looked happy. Completely happy, and Adrian realized that was all he’d wanted.
Not gratitude, or praise. Not anything in return, just this. Her happiness.
Emilia suddenly turned toward him. She raised a brow at him, feeling his eyes kn ber for so long. "Why are you looking at me?"
He didn’t answer immediately. He stared at her longer. The lighting on her face looked exceptional, like it was made for her.
The soft glow from the cabin lights settled across her features, catching the curve of her cheek, the warmth in her green eyes, and the loose strands of hair framing her face.
Outside the window, the entire city glittered beneath them, but somehow, none of it could compete with the woman sitting beside him. For once, Adrian couldn’t find a single word that felt sufficient.
Emilia tilted her head slightly, still waiting for an answer. A small smile appeared on her lips when she noticed the way he was looking at her.
Adrian’s gaze softened, lingering on her face as though he wanted to memorize the exact moment. The city beneath them, the lights reflected in her eyes, and the quiet happiness written across her expression.
He had seen beautiful things before. More than he could remember. But looking at Emilia like this made beauty feel like an inadequate word. So he said nothing.
Emilia swallowed, suddenly feeling a little self-conscious beneath the weight of his gaze. "Adrian?"
He exhaled softly, his eyes never leaving her face. "You know what I think luxury is?" He paused, as though the answer had only just occurred to him. "This."
His gaze moved over her slowly, almost reverently. "Having you beside me, with the whole world beneath us... and still thinking you’re the most beautiful thing I’ve ever been given."
Emilia blinked twice. For a moment, she genuinely forgot what she was supposed to say.
That was... a lot of words.
Adrian wasn’t exactly a man who filled silence just for the sake of filling it. Most of the time, getting more than a sentence out of him felt like an achievement. And now he had just looked at her like that and said all of that in one breath.
Her lips parted slightly, but nothing came out.
She blinked rapidly, her cheeks growing warmer as she looked away toward the window.
"I..." She stopped, completely losing the rest of the sentence. A small, embarrassed smile tugged at her lips. "Okay."
She glanced back at him. "That was... a lot."
Adrian’s mouth curved faintly.
Emilia shook her head, still visibly flustered. "You don’t usually talk this much, and then you decide to say something like that?"
He shrugged, perfectly calm.
She stared at him for another second before letting out a quiet laugh and covering part of her face with her hand.
"You’re making me nervous."
His eyes softened and somehow, that only made her heart beat faster.
She smiled, and looked back outside.
The city stretched beneath them like an endless field of stars.
She had no idea how long they stayed like that. Maybe ten minutes, maybe twenty. Time seemed to lose its meaning.
Bzzzt.
Adrian’s phone suddenly vibrated inside his coat pocket.
He ignored it.
Emilia didn’t notice.
A few moments later, it buzzed again, and again.
Adrian’s eyes lowered briefly.
He still didn’t move. The phone vibrated a third time, then a fourth.
His expression changed slightly.
Emilia noticed it. "Everything okay?" She asked softly.
Adrian reached into his pocket. "Probably nothing."
The phone vibrated again in his hand.
He looked at the screen. There was three messages. All from Christian. His brow furrowed, and he opened the conversation.
Christian: Adrian.
Another message appeared.
Christian: The woman you spoke of, is she Emilia Hayes?
Adrian’s expression hardened.
He felt another vibration.
Christian: Fucking answer.
His thumb stopped moving.
A fourth message arrived.
Christian: If she’s Emilia Hayes, don’t tell me you don’t have a file on her.
Adrian stared at the screen. His jaw tightened. Then he saw the attachment beneath the messages.
There was a file.
His name wasn’t on it, and neither was Emilia’s. However, something about it made the air inside the helicopter suddenly feel colder.
He tapped it.
The document opened.
Adrian read the first page. His face became completely unreadable. His eyes moved across the information.
He read it once, then again. He didn’t blink.
Emilia noticed the change. "Adrian?"
He didn’t answer.
She leaned slightly toward him. "What’s wrong?"
He closed the file slowly, and then he lifted his eyes. He looked at Emilia. Not softly this time, or warmly. He studied her, almost suspiciously.
As if he were seeing her for the first time.
Emilia’s smile faded. "What?"
Adrian said nothing. His phone remained in his hand.
And for the first time that night, the beautiful city beneath them was the last thing on his mind.
