The helicopter landed a little after ten.
By then, Emilia was barely awake.
The excitement that had kept her talking throughout most of the flight had slowly faded somewhere over the last twenty minutes.
She had gone from pointing out lights below them to resting her head against the seat, and blinking sleepily whenever Adrian asked if she was comfortable.
By the time they stepped out of the helipad, she was quiet.
The night air was colder than before.
Adrian noticed immediately.
He placed a hand at the small of her back as they walked away from the helicopter, keeping her close as the rotors continued turning behind them.
Emilia looked up at him. "That was beautiful."
"I’m glad you liked it."
She smiled sleepily. "You didn’t even watch half of it."
"I watched enough."
She narrowed her eyes. "You watched me."
He didn’t deny it.
That earned him another tired smile. They walked through the estate together.
The corridors were almost completely silent now. Most of the staff had retired for the night, leaving the enormous house strangely peaceful.
Emilia’s steps gradually became slower.
Adrian glanced down at her. "You tired?"
She shook her head. "No."
He waited.
She yawned, and Adrian raised an eyebrow.
"I’m not tired."
"Of course."
"I just yawned."
A faint smile touched his mouth, and they continued walking.
Emilia leaned slightly against him without seeming to realize she was doing it.
Adrian said nothing. When they reached his room, he opened the door and stepped aside for her.
She walked inside.
The room looked exactly as it had earlier with the warm ivory walls, cream curtains, and soft lighting.
Emilia looked at the bed for a moment. "I think your bed is trying to seduce me." She joked, as she took a step in.
Adrian closed the door behind them. He chuckled.
Emilia went on. "It’s very comfortable-looking."
"You haven’t even touched it."
She walked toward it. "You left me in here for hours. Of course I laid on it."
He watched her.
She sat on the edge, and the mattress sank beneath her weight.
Adrian folded his arms. "Still think it’s trying to seduce you?"
She looked at him, and smiled, tapping the bed. "I’m really tired, Adrian."
Emilia leaned backward slightly.
The exhaustion she’d been hiding all evening finally became impossible to conceal. Her eyelids drooped, and Adrian walked toward her.
"Come on."
She looked up at him. "Where?"
"You’re going to sleep."
"I can walk to the other end of the bed."
"I didn’t say you couldn’t." He bent down before she could respond.
One arm slipped beneath her knees, and the other went around her back.
He lifted her effortlessly.
Emilia let out a quiet gasp. "Adrian."
He looked down at her.
"What?"
"You could warn someone."
"You were about to fall asleep sitting up."
"I wasn’t."
Her head settled against his chest.
"You’re very argumentative for someone who’s half asleep."
"I’m not half asleep." Her voice had already become softer.
Adrian carried her toward the bed.
She wrapped one arm loosely around his neck. For a moment, she simply listened to his heartbeat.
It was steady, and calm. Completely unlike hers.
He lowered her onto the mattress carefully.
Emilia sank into the softness.
Adrian reached for the blanket and pulled it over her. She watched him through her half-lowered eyes.
He straightened.
For a few seconds, he simply stood there.
The room was quiet.
Emilia looked strangely peaceful beneath the jade-green covers. Her hair had fallen across one side of her face.
Adrian reached down and gently moved it away.
She smiled faintly. "Thank you."
"Go to sleep."
He turned.
His fingers had barely reached the lamp when Emilia moved. Her hand came out from beneath the blanket, and she caught his wrist.
Adrian stopped. He looked back at her.
Her eyes were already closing again.
"Are you not coming to bed too?" She asked.
He paused, and for a moment, he simply looked at her.
"No."
Her eyes opened a little more. "Why?"
"I have work to do."
She frowned sleepily. "At this hour?"
"Unfortunately."
She didn’t let go of his wrist. "Can’t it wait until tomorrow?"
"Some of it."
"Then let it."
Adrian’s expression softened. "You need to sleep."
"So do you."
"I’ll sleep later."
She looked at him for several seconds, then her fingers loosened.
"Okay."
There was a trace of disappointment in her voice.
Adrian heard it.
He leaned down, and his hand settled gently against the side of her face.
Emilia looked up at him. "You stared at me so strangely while staring into your phone earlier." She blinked softly. "Did I do something?"
"No, sweetheart." Adrian mumured, and moved the strands of her hair further away from her face. "You did nothing wrong. I simply got a strange email."
Emilia stared at him for another moment, searching his face.
"Or was it because of what I said earlier about needing other people?" She asked him.
Adrian’s expression softened. "No."
She blinked. "No?"
"No." His thumb moved slowly along her jaw. "It has nothing to do with that."
"Then why did you look at me like that?"
Adrian held her gaze. For a second, the truth sat dangerously close to his lips. But none of it could leave his mouth.
Not now.
Instead, he brushed another strand of hair away from her face.
"I told you," he murmured. "It was a strange email."
Emilia still looked unconvinced. "You’re sure?"
"I’m sure."
Her eyes narrowed slightly. "You’re not secretly regretting bringing me here?"
"No."
"Not even a little?"
He held her gaze. "Not even for a second."
Her shoulders finally relaxed. She gave him a small smile. "Okay."
Adrian’s thumb remained against her jaw.
"And for what it’s worth," he added quietly, "you don’t need someone else to remind you that you have a life outside of me."
Her smile faded slightly.
He looked directly into her eyes. "You already know that."
Emilia swallowed.
"And if you decide you need space," he continued, "I’ll respect it."
There was no accusation in his voice, and no anger. That somehow made her chest ache more.
She looked down briefly. "You make it really difficult to stay casual."
A faint smile touched his lips. "I know."
She looked back at him. "That’s not very reassuring."
"It wasn’t meant to be."
She laughed softly.
Adrian watched her for another heartbeat, then he leaned closer.
He rubbed his thumb on her jaw soothingly, and kissed her. His tongue moved into her parted lips, and he kissed her deeply.
The kiss made her forget what she’d been about to say. Her hand rose to his shirt, with her fingers curling lightly into the fabric.
For several seconds, neither of them moved away. Adrian pulled back first.
He rested his forehead briefly against hers. "Good night, Emilia."
She looked at him. "Good night."
He brushed his thumb over her cheek, then he straightened. She watched him walk away. At the doorway, he looked back.
Emilia had already turned onto her side. Her eyes were closing.
Adrian stood there for another few minutes, then he quietly left. The door closed behind him, and the smile disappeared from his face.
