The study was on the other side of the eastern wing. Adrian entered without turning on the main lights.
Only the desk lamp illuminated the room.
He placed his phone on the desk, then his laptop, and sat down.
For several seconds, he didn’t open anything. His mind was still in the bedroom. Emilia’s fingers around his wrist, and the sleep in her voice.
He exhaled slowly.
He shouldn’t have kissed her. Not because he regretted it. That was precisely the problem. He had no regrets.
His gaze moved toward the closed study door.
Somewhere beyond it, Emilia was asleep in his room.
Safe, unaware, and trusting him.
Adrian leaned back in his chair, and then his phone vibrated once.
He looked at it, and Christian’s name appeared on the display. He saw another vibration.
A message.
Adrian unlocked the screen.
Christian: Call me.
He ignored it.
Another message arrived.
Christian: Now.
Adrian stared at the screen. He picked up the phone and called.
Christian answered almost immediately. "Finally."
Adrian said nothing.
Christian’s voice became serious. "Tell me she’s with you."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. "Why?"
"Because if the woman you’re with is Emilia Hayes, we either have a problem, or a solution."
Adrian’s jaw tightened. "You’re going to explain that sentence."
"I sent you the file." Christian said, with a matter of fact tone.
"I saw it."
"And?"
"And I’m reading it." Adrian answered calmly.
Christian exhaled. "Then you know."
Adrian’s eyes moved toward the laptop. "I know her father’s name."
"That’s not all."
Adrian didn’t respond.
Christian continued. "Dante Gomez Hayes."
The name sat heavily in the silence.
Adrian had seen it before.
Years ago, buried inside financial reports, banking records, internal correspondence, and names that had seemed insignificant at the time.
However, now the pieces were beginning to align.
"Dante was one of the men responsible for the missing Belmont funds," Christian said.
"I know."
"Adrian." Christian’s voice became lower. "You don’t know."
Adrian stared at the screen. He hissed. "Then tell me."
"Dante wasn’t just involved. You know he started it."
Adrian’s expression hardened.
Christian continued. "The first transfers were made through accounts connected to him."
Adrian remained silent.
"He created the structure."
Adrian took in a soft inhale. "Shell companies?"
"Some. Private accounts too. A few legitimate businesses were used to disguise the movement of money."
Adrian leaned forward. "And the others?"
"Followed."
"Who?"
"We’re still identifying all of them."
Adrian’s fingers tightened around the phone.
Christian sighed. "Dante was greedy, Adrian. Not desperate. Not cornered. He wanted more money."
Adrian looked at the file on his laptop. "And Blackwood?"
"Blackwood was one of the places the money was being diverted through with the most percentage."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. "How much?"
"We’re still calculating the full amount."
"Estimate."
"Enough to bankrupt smaller institutions."
Adrian was quiet.
Christian waited, and Adrian finally asked the question that mattered.
"Where is Dante?"
Christian remained silent.
Adrian’s gaze sharpened. "Christian."
"We don’t know exactly." He responded quietly.
"You just told me he’s alive."
"We know he’s alive."
Adrian stood.
He walked toward the window. Outside, the estate was dark except for the pathway lights.
"Dante Hayes was reported dead." Adrian mumured into the phone.
"Yes."
"Cause?"
"Supposed car accident."
Adruan raised a questioning brow. "Supposed?"
"There’s no body."
Adrian turned. "What?"
"No body."
Christian continued.
"The accident happened almost eleven years ago. Dante’s car was found abandoned near a ravine. There was enough damage to make the story believable, but there was no confirmed body."
Adrian stared into the darkness. "Why wasn’t that investigated?"
"It was."
"And?"
"The investigation went nowhere."
Adrian’s expression became colder. "Because someone made sure it did."
"That’s what we think."
Adrian returned to the desk.
He opened the file, and the first page displayed Dante’s photograph.
Adrian had seen the man before, in photographs, old records, and corporate events.
Dante looked polished, and confident. Almost charming. There was nothing monstrous about his face.
However, he had never seen a trace of Mrs. Hayes beside him. He always had a different woman in his arms with each photographs.
He looked like a man people trusted.
Adrian scrolled.
Dante Gomez Hayes, former financial consultant. Former Blackwood administrator, and external adviser to several private investment groups.
Married.
One daughter.
Adrian stopped.
The next line was familiar.
Emilia Hayes.
His stomach tightened. He stared at her name. For several seconds, he didn’t move.
Christian was still speaking. "Adrian?"
"I’m here."
"You understand what this means?"
"Yes." Adrian’s eyes remained on the screen. "I understand perfectly."
"Then you know you need to stay away from her until we know more."
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Christian continued. "I know you’re going to hate hearing this." He paused briefly, and continued. "She could be useful."
Adrian’s expression changed immediately. "Don’t."
Christian went silent.
"Don’t finish that sentence."
"Adrian—"
"No." His voice was quiet, but final.
Christian exhaled. "I wasn’t saying she knows anything."
"You were going to say she could lead us to him." Adrian looked at the file again.
Christian didn’t deny it.
Adrian closed his eyes for a moment, then he looked toward the door. Behind it was Emilia, sleeping peacefully.
She had no idea.
No idea who her father was. No idea that the man she’d believed was dead had disappeared intentionally.
No idea that the man beside her was investigating the very financial crimes her father had helped create.
Christian spoke carefully. "We need Dante."
"I know."
"And if Emilia is the only connection we have—"
"She isn’t."
"How do you know?"
"Because she isn’t him." He deadpanned. "She believes he’s dead."
Christian fell silent.
Adrian rubbed his jaw. "She’s not responsible for what he did. Don’t talk about her like she’s evidence."
Christian exhaled. "I’m not trying to hurt her. But this investigation—"
Adrian cut him off. "Is my problem."
Christian paused.
Adrian looked toward the closed door again. He knew exactly how involved he had become.
He had broken rules for her. He had changed plans for her. He had spent an entire day watching her smile.
He had flown her across the city simply because he wanted to give her something she would remember.
And now he was sitting in a study discovering that her father had been stealing from his family.
Adrian stared at the screen.
Dante’s photograph remained there.
A man he had every reason to despise.
A man whose crimes had cost the Belmonts millions. A man who had manipulated systems, people, and institutions. A man who had disappeared when consequences finally came close.
And somehow, that man’s daughter was asleep in Adrian’s bed.
Adrian laughed once. There was no humor in it.
Christian heard it. "What’s funny?"
"Nothing."
"You don’t sound okay."
"I’m not." Adrian closed the file, then opened another. It had Dante’s financial history. He began reading through it.
