"I think you have a history of doing exactly that."

Christian laughed quietly. "Fair."

Adrian’s gaze remained steady. "I’m serious."

Christian nodded. "I know."

Adrian waited.

Christian rubbed his jaw. "She doesn’t even want me."

Adrian’s lips twitched.

Christian pointed at him. "Make sure that isn’t a smile."

Adrian’s expression remained neutral.

"I’m serious." Christian shook his head. "She blocks me."

Adrian’s eyebrow lifted.

"Every time." He paused for a second. "Every single time."

Adrian’s lips curled into the smallest smile.

Christian stared at him, dumbfounded. This wasn’t a situation to smile at, but Adrian decided to smile.

Adrian picked up another ball.

Christian laughed. "I’ve been blocked so many times that I’m beginning to take it personally."

Adrian tossed the ball into his hand. "Maybe you should."

"She blocks every new number I use."

Adrian looked at him.

"Every one."

"How many?"

Christian paused. "...That’s irrelevant."

Adrian’s eyebrow rose.

Christian sighed. "Several."

"How many?"

Christian looked away. "Enough."

Adrian shook his head.

Christian groaned.

"She might as well be your reality check." Adrian served.

Christian returned it.

"You’re not all high and mighty as you think."

Another return.

"Not everyone wants you."

Christian groaned. "Please don’t remind me."

Adrian’s lips twitched again.

Christian pointed his racket at him. "I still have my dignity."

Adrian raised a brow at him. "You keep calling her." He reminded.

"Because she keeps blocking me."

"That’s not how that works."

Christian returned the ball. He let out a fustrated exhale. "I’ve never had a woman work this hard to avoid me."

"Maybe that’s the point."

Christian sighed. "She has my full respect."

Adrian nodded.

"But..."

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

Christian grinned. "I just need one night with her."

Adrian’s expression flattened.

"Just one."

He emphasized the words as though that somehow made the situation better.

Adrian picked up another tennis ball. "After the one night, what next?"

Christian’s brows came together. "Huh?" He scoffed. "No one would ask that."

Adrian looked at him. "They wouldn’t ask you."

Christian’s expression shifted.

Adrian continued. "You have a long history of sleeping around."

Christian sighed. He gestured with his hands. "Here we go qith the lectures."

Adrian ignired his sarcasm. "But what happens if she wants something more?"

Christian laughed lightly. "She wouldn’t."

"How do you know?"

"Trust me."

Adrian bounced the ball against the ground.

Christian continued. "She knows she deserves more than being with someone like me."

Adrian looked at him.

For a second, neither spoke.

Christian’s smile faded slightly.

Adrian’s voice was quiet. "That’s an interesting thing to say."

"Why?"

"Because you know she’s better than you."

Christian shrugged. "I know that."

"And you’re still planning to pursue her."

"I didn’t say pursue."

Adrian stared at him.

Christian sighed. He leaned against his racket. "I like her."

Adrian’s expression didn’t change.

Christian immediately shook his head. "Not like that."

Adrian’s eyebrow lifted.

"I mean..." Christian stopped. He looked toward the hedge surrounding the court. "I don’t know."

Adrian waited.

"She’s annoying."

Adrian’s lips twitched.

"She’s rude."

There was another tiny movement at the corner of Adrian’s mouth.

"She ignores me, and she blocked me multiple times." Christian sighed. "She’s also..."

He stopped.

Adrian waited.

Christian looked down. "She’s different."

Adrian’s expression softened slightly. He picked up the ball.

Christian looked at him. "I don’t think she likes me."

Adrian tossed the ball upward. "Then leave her alone." He deadpanned.

Christian watched him serve.

The ball flew over the net.

Christian moved and returned it.

"That’s the problem."

Adrian’s gaze sharpened. "What problem?"

Christian shrugged. "I don’t know."

The ball came back, and he returned it.

"I’ve never had to wonder whether someone likes me."

Adrian caught the ball.

"That’s actually pathetic when I say it out loud."

Adrian tossed the ball back to him. "At least you’re aware."

Christian caught it. "She doesn’t care that I’m Christian Sinclair." He blinked in disbelief. "Can you believe that? She doesn’t care about my last name."

Adrian looked at him.

"She doesn’t care about the money, and she doesn’t care about the cars. She doesn’t care about what our interactions can bring to her."

Adrian remained silent.

"She doesn’t even care about the fact that I look good."

Adrian’s expression became completely blank. He walked toward the net.

Christian followed.

"Maybe that’s why I want her."

Adrian stopped.

Christian shrugged. "Because she doesn’t want me."

Adrian’s expression became serious. "Then be careful."

Christian’s smile disappeared. "With what?"

"Wanting someone because they don’t want you."

Christian stared at him.

Adrian continued. "That’s not the same thing as wanting them."

Christian was quiet.

The words seemed to settle somewhere between them. After a moment, Christian looked away.

"You’re becoming annoyingly wise."

"I’ve always been."

"No."

Adrian gave him a look.

Christian laughed. He bounced the ball. "You’ve always been annoying."

Adrian’s mouth almost curved into a smile.

Christian pointed at him. "That was almost a smile." He called out, as if it was a competition.

"Play." Adrian ordered flatlym

"Yes, sir."

They returned to their positions, and Christian served. Adrian returned, and the rally resumed.

For several minutes, the only sounds were the rackets and their footsteps against the court.

Then Christian spoke.

"What if I actually like her?"

Adrian returned the ball. "Then find out."

Christian caught it. "How?"

"Talk to her."

"She blocks me."

"Then stop using new numbers."

Christian shook his head. "She’s impossible."

Adrian looked at him. "No."

Christian waited.

"She’s setting a boundary."

Christian’s expression became thoughtful.

Adrian’s voice remained firm. "Respect it."

Christian nodded. "I will."

Adrian studied him.

Christian sighed. "I will."

The answer seemed to satisfy him.

Adrian looked away, amd Christian picked up another ball.

"Still..."

Adrian sighed. "Christian."

"I’m done."

Adrian eyed him.

"I mean it this time."

Adrian’s eyebrow lifted.

Christian smiled.

Adrian shook his head, and they played another point.

Christian managed to return a difficult shot, and Adrian sent it back with even greater force.

Christian sprinted.

He reached it just before it bounced twice.

The ball flew back across the net, and Adrian returned it.

Christian missed.

The ball rolled toward the fence.

Christian bent over, breathing heavily. "You’re getting old."
