The private tennis court behind the Belmont estate was one of the few places Adrian could tolerate spending an afternoon without feeling like he was being watched.

It was tucked behind a row of tall hedges, far enough from the main house that the sounds from the estate barely reached it.

There was no staff, no unnecessary interruptions, and no curious eyes.

Just the court, the afternoon sun, and the steady rhythm of a tennis ball being struck across the net.

Adrian stood near the baseline, with a racket in hand. He bounced the ball once against the ground, then again.

His eyes remained fixed on the opposite side of the court.

Christian stood there with his racket resting against his shoulder, looking entirely too relaxed for someone who had spent the last twenty minutes trying to beat Adrian.

"You’re getting predictable," Christian called.

Adrian looked at him.

Christian grinned. "That look." He pointed at Adrian with his racket. "You always do that before you serve."

Adrian bounced the ball again.

Christian sighed. "See?"

Adrian served.

The ball flew across the court.

Christian moved quickly, meeting it with his racket.

The sharp crack echoed through the quiet space.

Adrian returned it.

Christian returned again, and the rally continued back and forth.

Neither man spoke for several minutes until Christian finally broke the silence.

"Dante’s location moved."

Adrian’s racket connected with the ball. "Where now?"

"Pennsylvania."

Adrian returned the ball without changing expression. "From Switzerland?"

Christian nodded. "Switzerland to Pennsylvania."

Adrian’s eyes narrowed slightly. "When?"

"Last night."

The ball came back toward Christian.

He stepped forward and struck it.

"His phone was inactive for a while after he left Switzerland," Christian continued. "Then it came back online briefly. We caught the signal."

Adrian returned the ball. "Where in Pennsylvania?"

"That’s the problem." Christian moved quickly.

The ball bounced once before he returned it.

"We haven’t narrowed it down to a specific city yet."

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

Christian noticed. "I have people working on it."

Adrian nodded once. He made another return.

Christian moved toward the left. "Pennsylvania is a big place," he said.

"I know."

"Which means we need more time."

"I know."

Christian rolled his eyes. "Do you ever say anything besides those two words?"

Adrian returned the ball. "No."

Christian laughed. "Right."

They continued playing.

The conversation about Dante seemed to disappear as quickly as it had started.

But Adrian’s mind had already shifted.

Pennsylvania.

Dante had moved again.

Switzerland had made sense. It had been one of several places Adrian had expected him to hide.

Pennsylvania was different.

It wasn’t random.

At least, Adrian didn’t believe it was. Dante Gomez Hayes wasn’t the kind of man who moved without a reason.

There was always a reason, a destination, a person, and a transaction.

Adrian struck the ball harder than necessary.

Christian returned it. "You know," Christian said, breathing slightly harder, "you could try not to murder the ball."

Adrian didn’t answer.

Christian smirked. "Just saying."

The ball came back.

Christian stepped into it, then he suddenly stopped.

The ball bounced behind him.

Adrian lowered his racket.

Christian stood still.

For several seconds, he stared toward the other side of the court.

Adrian waited, and Christian looked at him.

"I met someone."

Adrian’s expression didn’t change.

Christian smiled. "About two month ago."

Adrian’s gaze remained fixed on him.

Christian bounced the racket lightly against his thigh. "I didn’t think much of it at first."

Adrian’s eyebrow lifted slightly.

Christian smiled. "Well, I thought a little about it."

Adrian said nothing.

Christian chuckled. "Fine. I thought a lot about it."

He picked up the ball that had rolled behind him. "Her name is Kylie."

Adrian’s expression changed almost imperceptibly.

Christian noticed.

Adrian looked away. "Keep playing."

Christian laughed. "That’s exactly why I brought it up."

Adrian’s gaze returned to him.

Christian tossed the ball from one hand to the other.

"I found out a few days ago that she’s Emilia’s friend."

Adrian’s face became unreadable again.

Christian continued. "Close friend."

Adrian’s fingers tightened around the racket handle.

Christian watched him. "I didn’t know that when I met her."

Adrian remained silent.

Christian stepped toward the baseline.

"So I started thinking."

"That’s usually when you get into trouble."

Christian laughed. "Very funny."

Adrian didn’t smile.

Christian served, and Adrian returned it.

Christian returned.

The ball moved between them.

"How about I get closer to her?"

Adrian’s eyes lifted.

Christian shrugged. "Beyond the pretty and mesmerizing face."

Adrian’s expression hardened slightly.

Christian grinned. "Come on. She’s beautiful."

Adrian returned the ball.

Christian returned it. "I could get to know her."

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

Christian continued. "Find out what she knows about Emilia."

Adrian’s racket met the ball.

"Perhaps there are things Emilia hasn’t told you."

The ball landed near Christian’s feet.

He barely reached it. He returned it awkwardly.

Adrian watched him.

"I already told you, Christian." His voice was calm. "Emilia knows nothing about her father. He’s dead."

Christian caught the next ball instead of returning it. He stood with the ball in his palm.

"How can we be so sure if we don’t try?"

Adrian frowned. "Because I know her."

"You know her." Christian repeated the words slowly. "That’s what everyone says before they discover they don’t."

Adrian’s gaze hardened.

Christian raised his hands slightly. "I’m not saying Emilia is lying."

"Then what are you saying?"

"I’m saying we don’t know what she doesn’t know."

Adrian stared at him.

Christian continued. "This wouldn’t kill her."

Adrian said nothing.

Christian tossed the ball toward him.

Adrian caught it.

"And there’s another possibility."

Adrian waited.

Christian’s expression became more serious. "How are you so sure that her being in your bed wasn’t premeditated?"

The court became quiet.

Adrian’s face changed. "Christian." He called. It was a warning.

Christian immediately raised both hands in surrender. "Okay."

Adrian stared at him.

Christian shook his head. "I’m not trying to be an asshole."

Adrian’s eyes remained cold.

"I was just saying."

"Stop."

Christian nodded. "Fine."

Adrian turned away.

Christian watched him for a moment, then he smiled slightly. "You really don’t like anyone questioning her."

Adrian looked over his shoulder. He gave him an icy look.

Christian immediately shut his mouth. "Noted."

Adrian turned back toward the court. He tossed the ball into the air, and the serve came fast.

Christian returned it.

The rhythm resumed.

Christian eventually spoke again.

"So..."

Adrian didn’t answer.

"About Kylie."

Adrian’s racket struck the ball harder than mecessary. "Don’t."

Christian smiled. "I haven’t even said anything."

"You don’t need to."

Christian laughed. "You’re protective of them."

Adrian’s eyes remained on the ball. "I’m protective of anyone you intend to use." He met Christian’s eyes briefly. "Your games ends people. I don’t want it for them."

Christian’s smile faded.

Adrian continued. "If you’re going anywhere near Kylie because you want information, don’t."

Christian’s brows lifted.

Adrian’s voice remained calm. "If you want something casual, that’s your business."

Christian blinked at Adrian’s blunt refusal.

"But you don’t hurt her."

Christian’s expression shifted.

Adrian continued playing. "Don’t make promises you don’t intend to keep."

Christian stared at him.

"Don’t make her believe you’re interested in something serious if you’re not."

The ball came toward Christian. He didn’t return it. It bounced beside him.

Adrian lowered his racket.

Christian slowly walked toward the net. "You think I’m going to hurt any woman I get encountered with?"
