Emilia woke up slowly. She stretched lightly, and moaned sleepily.
And then, she lay still for a few seconds. Her eyes closed, trying to understand the unfamiliar softness beneath her cheek.
The mattress felt different from hers, and the sheets were softer. The room smelled faintly of Adrian.
She slowly opened her eyes.
For a moment, she simply stared at the dark ceiling. Then she turned her head.
Adrian was still asleep beside her. His face was turned slightly toward her, with his breathing slow and even.
He looked different when he slept. Younger, and less guarded.
The hard lines that usually surrounded his expression had softened. There was no calculating gaze, no carefully controlled expression, and no hint of the man who always seemed to know exactly what he was doing.
Emilia smiled.
She propped herself up on one elbow and studied him. His hair was slightly messy, something she had never seen during the day.
She reached toward him. Her fingers stopped just before touching his hair.
She smiled to herself.
She didn’t want to wake him.
Not yet, so she simply watched.
A few minutes passed, and Adrian eventually shifted. His brow furrowed slightly, and he opened his eyes.
He stared at the ceiling for a second before turning his head.
His eyes found hers, then his lips curved faintly. "Good morning."
Emilia smiled. "Good morning."
He leaned toward her, and gave her a quick soft kiss. The kiss was barely a second against her lips.
Then he pulled away, rolled onto his back, and stared at the ceiling again as though that was all the greeting required.
Emilia blinked.
She smiled. "That’s it?"
Adrian glanced at her. For a moment, he said nothing. Then he shifted toward her again, propping himself up on one arm.
His eyes settled on hers.
Emilia’s smile slowly faded beneath the weight of his gaze.
He wasn’t looking at her casually this time.
He studied her face as though he were searching for something hidden there. Something she hadn’t said aloud.
Her breath caught. Neither of them moved.
The room seemed suddenly quieter.
Adrian’s gaze flickered briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes.
Emilia swallowed. "What?" she whispered.
He didn’t answer.
He simply leaned closer.
Her fingers curled lightly into the sheets as his face came within inches of hers. She could feel the warmth of his breath against her skin.
His hand rose, gently brushing a strand of hair away from her face. His eyes remained locked with hers.
Emilia’s breath left her in a quiet exhale.
That was all the invitation he needed.
Adrian closed the remaining distance and kissed her. This time, there was nothing quick about it.
His lips pressed firmly against hers, the kiss deepening naturally as Emilia leaned toward him. Her hand found his shoulder, holding him there as her eyes slipped closed.
For a few quiet seconds, neither of them seemed to remember that they had anywhere else to be.
When they finally parted, Adrian remained close enough that their foreheads nearly touched.
A faint smile curved his lips.
"Better?"
Emilia opened her eyes. She tried to look unimpressed. It didn’t work.
"Much." She smiled, and her nose scrunched.
She sank back into the soft bed, pulling the blanket slightly higher.
Adrian shook his head. He playfully pinched the bridge of her nose, and gave her space. He reached toward the bedside table and picked up his phone.
The moment he looked at the screen, the air around him changed.
It was subtle, but Emilia noticed it.
His expression hardened, and the softness disappeared from his eyes. His jaw tightened.
He stared at the screen for several seconds without moving.
Emilia watched him.
She hadn’t meant to pry. She knew better than to invade someone’s privacy, especially his. But whatever he’d read had changed his entire demeanor.
"What’s wrong?"
Adrian didn’t answer immediately. He scrolled through the message once more. "Nothing."
Emilia frowned. "That doesn’t look like nothing."
He locked the phone. "It’s fine."
She studied him. "Adrian."
He looked at her.
She wasn’t demanding an answer. Her expression made him exhale.
"It’s a charity."
"A charity?"
He nodded. "They contacted me." Adrian stared at the phone in his hand. "They’re holding an event tomorrow night."
Emilia waited.
"They want me to attend." His gaze hardened. "They want me to speak."
Her expression softened. "About what?"
"My childhood."
Emilia went quiet.
Adrian looked away. "They’re raising money for children."
She understood immediately.
"The organization works with several children’s homes. One of them is the place where I grew up."
Emilia’s eyes softened. "And they want you to speak about your experience?"
"Apparently." He placed the phone face down on the bedside table. "I haven’t answered. So they sent another mail today." His jaw tightened. "I can’t do it."
Emilia sat up slightly. She was taken aback by his confession to not being able to do something. "Why not?"
He looked at her. "I can’t stand on a stage and tell a room full of strangers how my life was."
He almost sounded tired.
Emilia watched him carefully.
Adrian looked toward the windows. "I don’t want to talk about it."
She didn’t interrupt.
"I don’t want to remember it." His eyes remained fixed somewhere beyond the glass. "I don’t want to stand there while people look at me and feel sorry for me."
Emilia’s heart tightened.
"I don’t need their pity." He exhaled deeply. "I don’t know what I’m supposed to say. Money was supposed to be enough."
Emilia shifted closer. "You don’t have to tell them everything."
He gave a humorless laugh. "That’s easier said than done."
"No, it isn’t."
He looked at her.
She sat cross-legged beneath the sheets. "You don’t have to stand there and tell your entire life story."
He remained silent.
"You can say a few words."
He stretched his long legs. "That’s still speaking. I’m not good at that."
"You’re good at talking."
"Not about this."
Emilia nodded. "Okay."
She reached for his hand, and he let her take it. "You don’t have to tell them about every horrible thing that happened."
Adrian looked down at their hands.
"You can tell them what the orphanage meant to you."
He said nothing.
"You can tell them that it gave you somewhere to sleep."
His eyes lifted.
"That it gave you food." She squeezed his hand. "That someone made sure you went to school."
Adrian’s expression remained unreadable.
"And maybe," she continued softly, "you can tell them that even though your childhood wasn’t perfect, there were people who made it a little less terrible."
His eyes dropped again.
Emilia watched him. "You don’t have to talk about everything you lost." She paused. "Talk about what the place gave you."
Adrian was quiet.
She could see him thinking. "It raised you," she said.
His throat moved. "It did."
"Then talk about that."
He looked at her.
Emilia moved closer. "Imagine there’s a little boy sitting somewhere in that room."
Adrian’s eyes remained on hers.
"Maybe he’s scared." She paused. "Maybe he thinks nobody understands what it’s like to grow up without a family."
Adrian’s expression shifted.
"Then you walk onto that stage." She smiled softly. "And you don’t tell him everything."
Her thumb moved gently across the back of his hand.
"You just tell him that you were once sitting where he is."
Adrian swallowed.
"And that you made it out."
His eyes lowered.
"Do you know what that could mean to him?"
He didn’t answer.
"Or to a little girl?" Her voice became softer. "She might look at you and think..."
Emilia paused. "...if he made it out, maybe I can too."
Adrian looked at her.
She held his gaze. "You wouldn’t know who you’re giving hope to. Money isn’t necessarily all there is to give."
Adrian’s fingers tightened around hers.
Emilia smiled faintly. "You don’t have to tell them about the worst days." She moved closer. "You don’t owe strangers your pain."
Adrian’s eyes softened.
"But you could give them something else."
"What?" He asked, his voice rough.
"Hope."
He stared at her.
She smiled. Her voice was gentle. "Maybe tomorrow, you can use it to help someone survive theirs."
Adrian looked away.
For several seconds, he said nothing. Gradually, he breathed out slowly.
Emilia smiled. She lifted both hands, and placed them gently against his face.
Adrian froze.
Her palms rested against his cheeks. It was such a simple touch. Yet something about it made him completely still.
Emilia had touched his face before. Briefly. But never like this. Never without an ulterior motive.
Her eyes searched his.
"Go."
He stared at her. His eyes softened. "You really think I should?"
"I do."
"And if I hate it?"
"Hm, let’s see." Emilia gave him a thoughtful expression. "I’ll be here tomorrow. So you can come back and complain to me."
Adrian stared past her eyes. His thumbs brushed lightly along her cheekbones. His fingers tenderly roamed around her face.
She held his gaze, and smiled at him.
He looked at her hands against his face.
He exhaled, and then his hands came up and rested lightly over her wrists.
He hesitated. "You can’t come."
Emilia blinked. "Why?"
"I don’t want you there."
Her expression changed slightly. She nodded. She wasn’t expecting him to take her to a charity organisation.
Also, whatever this was between them would be a secret until it ends.
He looked almost uncomfortable saying it, but he said it still. "I have a long list of enemies, and there is no doubt they would be there."
Emilia blinked rapidly, but she nodded. "Okay."
Adrian looked surprised by how easily she’d accepted it.
