A few hours later, the penthouse had settled into a quieter rhythm.
The morning conversation had gradually faded into something easier. Emilia had spent part of the afternoon curled up on the couch with her textbook while Adrian worked nearby, occasionally answering a call or checking something on his laptop.
It was strangely domestic.
Emilia was halfway through a paragraph when someone knocked on the room door.
She looked up.
Adrian glanced toward the entrance. "I’ll get it."
He walked over and opened the door.
A man stood outside with a small medical case in his hand.
"Mr. Belmont." He created.
Adrian stepped aside. "Come in."
Emilia closed her textbook.
The man approached her with a polite smile. "Good afternoon, Miss Hayes."
"Hi."
"I’m here regarding your contact lenses."
Emilia’s face brightened. "Oh."
Adrian looked at her.
The doctor placed his case on the table and opened it. "I brought the first pair."
Emilia sat up straighter.
Adrian watched her.
The doctor explained how she would need to wear them initially, how long she should keep them in, and what to do if they became uncomfortable.
Emilia listened carefully. "So these are going to correct my vision?" She asked after a while.
"They should significantly improve it."
She smiled warmly. "Without glasses?"
He nodded. "Without glasses."
Her smile widened. She had never wanted to wear glasses.
The doctor smiled. "Let’s try them."
A few minutes later, Emilia blinked rapidly.
She looked around.
The room appeared sharper, and the edges of everything seemed cleaner.
She looked toward Adrian. He was standing near the window. She could see him really clearly.
Adrian turned. "Better?"
She nodded. "The best."
The doctor gave her a few more instructions before gathering his things.
"I’ll arrange a follow-up appointment."
"Thank you."
He nodded.
After he left, Emilia remained standing in the middle of the room.
She looked around again. "I can actually see everything."
Adrian smiled faintly. "You’ve been able to see everything."
"Not like this." She turned toward him. "Your face looks different."
His eyebrow rose. "Different?"
"Sharper."
He stared at her. "Is that a compliment?"
She smiled. "Maybe."
His phone began ringing.
He looked at the screen. "I need to take this."
Emilia nodded.
He walked toward the balcony.
She watched him disappear through the glass doors.
For a while, she remained where she was, and then she returned to the couch.
She picked up her textbook. However, she barely managed to read a page before Adrian returned.
He slipped his phone into his pocket.
"Everything okay?"
"Yes." He nodded. Then his gaze fell on her. "Did you open your gift?"
Emilia blinked. "The one from my birthday week?"
"Yes. All of them."
"Oh." She looked toward him. "No. Not yet."
His brows drew together. "You haven’t?"
She shook her head. "I did open Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday to Saturday’s left."
He stared at her.
Emilia gave him a convincing smile. "I’ll open it when I get home."
Adrian looked unconvinced. "Why wait?"
"Because it’s at my mum’s apartment."
He said nothing. He turned toward the next door in the room.
"Wait here."
Emilia watched him disappear into his walk-in closet. She frowned. A few minutes later, he returned carrying a white gift bag.
Emilia stared at it. "What’s that?"
"A gift."
She looked at him cautiously.
He held it out.
She slowly accepted it. "Adrian..."
"Open it."
She gave him a suspicious look.
"Why do I feel like I’m about to get scolded for not opening something?"
"Just open it, Emilia."
Emilia smiled faintly. She looked inside. The first thing she saw was a pair of sneakers.
Not ordinary sneakers.
A high-end designer pair she’d seen online before. Her eyes widened, and she moved them aside.
Then she saw the handbag.
Her mouth parted, and her heartbeat accelerated. She knew that bag. Most importantly, she’d seen the price.
"Adrian..."
There were several envelopes beneath it. She pulled one out, and her expression changed. She opened it, just to see cash in them. A lot of it. She stared at it, and then looked at him.
"What is this?"
"Money." He responded, like he doesn’t see an issue with it.
"I can see that." Her brows came together, and she counted the cash. "Thirty thousand dollars."
Emilia stared at him. "Thirty..." She looked back into the bag. "Thousand?"
He nodded.
She slowly put the envelope back.
"No."
Adrian frowned. "No?"
"I can’t take this."
"Why?"
She galred at him hard. "Because it’s thirty thousand dollars. That’s an insane amount of money."
He casually put a hand into his pant pocket. "It’s not that much." He told her softly.
Emilia stared at him. "To you."
He didn’t respond.
She lifted the bag, and held it out to him. "I can’t accept this."
"You can."
"No."
"Emilia."
She shook her head. "You bought me shoes, a bag, and thirty thousand dollars."
"Yes."
"Why?"
He looked genuinely confused. "Because I wanted to."
She stared at him with growing fury. That answer somehow made it worse.
"Adrian."
He sighed. His brows drew together. Before he could respond, he turned toward the closet again.
Emilia watched him. "Where are you going?"
He ignored the question, and disappeared into the closet.
She heard him moving things around. Then he returned with another box.
It was beautifully packaged.
Emilia stared at it. "What’s that again?"
"Perfume."
She blinked.
He held it out. "I loved your scent last night."
Her expression went blank.
He continued. "I thought you should add this to your collection."
Emilia stared at the box, then at him. She stared back at the box.
Adrian waited for her to receive it.
She didn’t move. Her eyebrows slowly drew together. "You really don’t see a problem with this?"
She gestured toward the bag. "The shoes. The bag. The money." Then she pointed at the perfume. "And now this."
Adrian stared at her. "Emilia, they’re just gifts."
"Of course they are." Her voice hardened. "Adrian, stop giving me gifts like these."
He went still.
"You know I’m a scholarship student, and I’m from an ordinary background." She shook her head. "This isn’t normal to me."
He opened his mouth.
She continued before he could speak. "We literally agreed that this wouldn’t last forever."
His expression shifted.
"So why are you giving me all these things every Saturday?"
Adrian said nothing.
"It’s becoming uncomfortable."
That caught him off guard.
His eyes narrowed slightly. "Uncomfortable?"
"Yes." She looked down at the bag. "I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with all this."
"You keep them."
"That’s not the point."
"Then what is?" He took a step closer to her. "State your point."
Emilia looked at him. "The point is that we’re supposed to know this has an ending, and we both agreed."
Her voice softened.
"We shouldn’t leave things behind with the next person when it’s time to leave."
Adrian stared at her.
"Wasn’t that the whole point of this?"
He didn’t answer.
For perhaps the first time since she’d known him, he genuinely didn’t seem to know what to say.
He’d never thought about the gifts that way. To him, giving something had never required a second thought.
If he saw something he thought she’d like, he bought it. If he wanted to make her smile, he bought something.
There had been no strategy behind it. It was simply how he expressed himself. He hadn’t considered that Emilia might see every gift as another thread tying her to him.
And suddenly, he understood.
Her eyes lowered. "I don’t want to leave with a closet full of things that remind me of you."
Adrian stared at her. He didn’t like the thought. Not even slightly. But he could tell she meant it.
"Emilia."
She shook her head. "I’m not trying to be ungrateful." She whispered, trying to explain. "I’m serious."
"I just..." Her voice faltered. She looked frustrated with herself. "I don’t want it to feel like I’m taking advantage of you and your money." Her voice came out sad.
Adrian stepped toward her.
She looked up at him.
He reached for her face. Both hands gently settled against her cheeks.
"Shuu." He hushed her.
She blinked.
"Hush, baby." His thumbs rested beneath her cheekbones. "Take a breath."
She stared at him. Her breathing was slightly uneven.
He waited. "Come on." He urged tenderly.
She inhaled slowly.
He watched her. "Again."
She breathed in, and then slowly exhaled.
Adrian’s thumbs moved gently across her cheeks. "Better?"
She nodded.
"Good." His voice softened. "I wasn’t trying to upset you, and I wasn’t trying to buy you."
She looked into his eyes. "I know."
"I just..." He paused. "I see things."
She waited.
"And I think you’d like them."
A tiny smile touched her lips. "So you buy them?"
"Yes."
"Every time?"
"Apparently."
She laughed softly.
He smiled. "I don’t think about it the way you do, and I don’t expect anything in return." He looked into her eyes. "I don’t want you to feel indebted to me."
Her expression softened. "Then why thirty thousand dollars?"
He sighed. "Because I thought you could use it."
She hesitated. "Adrian..."
"You don’t have to spend it."
She frowned lightly, searching his eyes. "Then what am I supposed to do with it?"
"Whatever you want."
"That’s not an answer." She stared at him.
"Save it." He shrugged.
She looked down.
"Or use it for school."
Her eyes lifted. "Or give it away." She suggested.
Adrian nodded, agreeing with her. His hands remained against her face. "You’re allowed to tell me when I do something you don’t like."
She smiled softly. "And you’re not angry?"
"No."
"You’re not secretly thinking I’m ungrateful?"
His expression hardened. "No." He gently brushed his thumb over her cheek. "I’d rather you tell me."
She nodded. "Okay."
"Good."
Emilia glanced toward the white bag. "I still don’t know if I can accept thirty thousand dollars."
He finally lowered his hands from her face.
Emilia looked down at the perfume box. She picked it up. The packaging was beautiful.
She turned it over. "You really liked my perfume?"
"Your scent."
She looked toward the white bag again, and then she remembered something.
"Wait."
Adrian looked at her.
"Tomorrow."
"What about tomorrow?"
"The charity."
He nodded.
Emilia’s expression became thoughtful. "Can you send me the link?"
"What link?"
"The charity’s website."
His expression changed slightly. "Why?"
"I want to donate."
Adrian stared at her. "Emilia."
"I still have the previous one you gave to me."
"You don’t have to."
She picked up her phone. "But I want to."
He watched her.
"I can donate online, right?"
"Yes."
"Then send me the link."
His eyes softened, but he said nothing.
She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "I just want to help." She softly pleaded with him.
He shook his head. "Fine."
He picked up his phone, and then he sent her the link. Her phone vibrated. She opened it immediately, and the charity’s page appeared.
