It was several minutes past midnight when Adrian finally stepped into the penthouse.
The doors closed quietly behind him.
The apartment was dark.
Not completely. A few lamps remained on, casting faint pools of warm light across the living room.
Adrian loosened his collar as he walked inside.
He walked farther inside. His phone remained in his hand. He checked the screen. There was no new message. So he believed she would be asleep.
He got into the elevator. Reaching the corridor of his bedroom, he looked toward the bedroom.
The door was open, and the room was dim.
He stepped inside slowly. His heartbeat unconsciously calmed down when he saw her.
Emilia was sitting on the floor beside the balcony doors. Her knees were pulled toward her chest.
She was staring through the glass.
The moonlight spilled across the room, illuminating one side of her face.
Adrian stopped.
Something about the way she was sitting made his chest tighten. She looked very small, and still. Too still.
"Emilia?"
She didn’t turn.
Adrian walked closer.
He noticed the blue shirt. It hung loosely around her body. Her hair fell over her shoulders.
She looked okay from behind, but he could tell something was wrong.
He could see it.
Even from behind. He saw the tension in her shoulders, and the way her hands were curled around her knees.
The way she seemed to be holding herself together felt so specific.
Adrian’s expression changed.
He approached her slowly. "Why are you still up, sweetheart?"
Emilia finally moved.
She turned her head, and their eyes met.
Adrian’s heart sank.
There was fear in her eyes. Not irritation, or sadness. Fear.
He immediately moved closer. "Emilia?"
She stood. Before he could ask another question, she crossed the distance between them.
She fell into his arms.
Adrian caught her instinctively.
Her arms wrapped tightly around his waist, and her face disappeared against his chest.
He froze. "Hey."
She didn’t answer.
Her body trembled.
Adrian’s arms immediately tightened around her. His hand moved to the back of her head.
"What happened?"
Emilia said nothing. She simply pulled impossibly closer to him.
He looked down at her. "Emilia."
She shook her head.
"Nothing happened." She whispered. Her voice was barely audible.
Adrian’s eyes darkened. "Nothing?"
She nodded against his chest. "Just hold me."
He didn’t ask again.
Not immediately. He simply wrapped both arms around her and held her. His chin rested gently against the top of her head.
Her breathing was uneven. He could feel every small tremor running through her body.
His hand moved slowly over her back.
"Okay." He whispered. "I’m here."
Emilia clutched his shirt tighter.
Adrian closed his eyes briefly. He didn’t know what had happened. But he knew she was frightened. And that was enough.
He held her more firmly. "You’re okay."
She didn’t respond.
"You’re safe."
Her fingers tightened around him.
Adrian slowly rubbed her back. "I’m here."
Her face remained pressed against him.
He could feel her breathing gradually becoming less erratic.
"Nothing is going to happen to you."
She swallowed.
He lowered his head. "Do you hear me?"
She gave him a tiny nod.
"Good." He kissed the top of her head.
Then he remained still.
For several moments, the only sound in the room was the faint hum of the air conditioner.
Adrian looked toward the balcony.
The city glittered beyond the glass.
Everything looked peaceful.
But Emilia wasn’t. Something had frightened her badly enough that she’d waited for him in the dark.
He pulled back slightly so he could see her face.
"Look at me."
She hesitated.
"Look at me, baby. Just for a second." He coaxed.
Emilia swallowed. Then slowly lifted her eyes.
Adrian studied her eyes. "Did someone hurt you?"
She shook her head.
"Did someone say something to you?"
She shook her head again.
"Did something happen to anyone you know?"
"No." Emilia finally parted her lips.
"Did someone call you?" He searched her face.
Emilia blinked at him.
"Tell me what happened."
Her lips parted, and nothing came out.
Her eyes dropped.
Adrian’s expression softened. He realized she wasn’t ready. He didn’t push. Instead, he gently brushed the hair away from her face.
He drew her closer against his chest and began moving slowly, almost instinctively, his body swayed with a gentle, steady rhythm.
One hand remained at the back of her head while the other moved up and down her back in slow, reassuring strokes. "Easy," he murmured.
"You don’t have to rush." He felt the tremor running through her and adjusted his hold, rocking her gently from side to side. "Just breathe for me, sweetheart. That’s all."
Emilia’s fingers tightened around his shirt. She rested her cheek against his chest, listening to the steady beat beneath her ear as his movements continued.
Adrian lowered his chin onto her head, keeping the same unhurried rhythm. "I’m right here," he whispered. "Nothing else matters right now."
His hand moved slowly through her hair, then back down her spine. "You can take as long as you need. I’m not going anywhere."
She looked at him. "You don’t have to tell me yet."
Her eyes glistened.
"But you will tell me when you’re ready."
She nodded faintly.
Adrian took her hand. "Come."
She didn’t move.
He squeezed her fingers. "Let’s get you into bed." He tried again.
She finally nodded.
He walked with her toward the bed.
Emilia’s hand remained wrapped around his. When they reached the bed, Adrian pulled the covers back.
"Lie down."
She climbed onto the mattress.
He waited until she was comfortable before sitting beside her.
She looked at him. "Stay."
The single word was so quiet that he almost missed it.
Adrian’s expression softened immediately. "I’m not going anywhere."
He climbed onto the bed.
Emilia moved toward him without hesitation.
She curled against his chest.
Adrian wrapped his arms around her. Her head rested beneath his chin, and he pulled the blanket over them.
For a while, he simply held her.
Then he spoke softly. "You know you can tell me anything."
She remained silent.
"Even if you think it’s stupid. Even if you think I’ll be angry."
Her arms tightened around him.
"I won’t."
She pressed closer.
Adrian’s hand moved slowly through her hair. "You don’t have to protect me from whatever happened."
She swallowed.
"I’m not going to force you to talk." He paused. "But I’m here."
She closed her eyes.
"Whatever it is..." His voice softened. "...I’ll deal with it."
Emilia’s breathing hitched.
Adrian felt it.
He held her tighter.
She buried her face deeper against him. He continued stroking her hair, and her fingers curled into his shirt.
Adrian looked toward the ceiling. He wasn’t going to sleep until he knew she felt safe. He lowered his head and kissed her hair.
She breathed slowly.
Emilia finally whispered. "Okay."
It was the first word she’d said in several minutes.
Adrian smiled faintly. He held her closer. "You can sleep."
She didn’t move.
He smiled. "I’m staying."
Her body relaxed slightly.
The tension slowly left her shoulders.
Adrian remained awake.
His eyes stayed open as he stared into the darkness. His hand continued moving gently through her hair.
He could feel her breathing becoming slower, and steadier. Inside him remained restless. Whatever had frightened Emilia tonight was still out there.
And he intended to find out what it was.
Not tonight. Not while she was trembling in his arms. Tonight, she needed him to be the person who held her.
