Emilia had been staring at her phone for almost ten minutes.

She hadn’t touched it.

It lay face down on her bed, exactly where she’d left it after returning to the dorm that morning.

Every few seconds, her eyes drifted toward it, then away. She didn’t want to look at it. She didn’t want to see another photograph, or another message.

Another reminder that someone had been watching her.

The worst part was that she still hadn’t told Adrian. Not last night, or even this morning. She’d spent the entire night pretending she was okay.

Emilia sat cross-legged on her bed, pulling her sweater tighter around herself.

She had skipped her morning class. She’d told herself it was because she hadn’t slept well.

That wasn’t entirely a lie.

But the real reason was Adrian.

She couldn’t face him. Not after the message, and after the photographs. She didn’t know what she would see on his face if she walked into his class.

Worse, she didn’t know what she’d say if he asked her why she was avoiding him.

She glanced at the clock, and it was almost noon.

Her stomach twisted. She reached toward the phone, and stopped. Her hand fell back onto the blanket.

She needed time. Time to think. Time to figure out what the anonymous person wanted. Time to decide whether she should tell Adrian.

And, most importantly, time to understand why someone had been watching them.

A knock sounded against the door.

Emilia froze.

Her heart seemed to drop straight into her stomach. The knock came again. She stared at the door.

Her first thought was Rowan. However, Rowan wouldn’t knock on her own door. She had the keys.

Her pulse quickened, and she swallowed. "Who is it?"

There was a pause at the other end.

Then a familiar voice answered. "Ethan."

Emilia closed her eyes.

Relief came first, then guilt. She slowly climbed off the bed. Her legs felt strangely weak.

She walked toward the door and unlocked it.

When she opened it, Ethan stood there with his hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket.

He smiled. "Hey."

"Hey." She returned softly.

His eyes immediately moved over her.

He glanced over her oversized sweater, her bare legs, and her slightly messy hair.

He frowned, concerned. "Are you sick?"

Emilia shook her head quickly. "No."

Ethan looked unconvinced. "You weren’t in class."

She looked down. "I’m fine."

He studied her for another second. "Are you sure you’re okay?"

Emilia rubbed her arms. "I just needed to stay in."

Ethan raised an eyebrow. "All morning?"

She nodded. "Yeah."

She forced a small smile. "I caught a morning cold."

"A morning cold?"

She shrugged. "It sounds stupid when you say it like that."

"It sounds stupid because it’s stupid."

She laughed softly. "I feel better now."

Ethan leaned against the doorframe. He glanced inside the room. "I’m hungry."

Emilia blinked at him. "What does that have to do with me?"

"I’m asking you to come eat."

She shook her head. "I’m not really hungry."

"That’s unfortunate."

"Why?"

"Because you’re coming anyway."

She stared at him.

He smiled. "Get dressed."

"Ethan..."

"Come on."

"I don’t feel like going anywhere."

"You’ve been locked in here all morning."

"I’m not locked in." Her expression changed. She glared at him.

Ethan noticed.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

His voice softened. "Come eat with me."

Emilia looked away. She didn’t want company. She wanted to stay inside where nobody could photograph her.

Where nobody could ask questions. Where her phone couldn’t suddenly become a weapon.

However, sitting alone in her room wasn’t helping either.

She exhaled. "Fine."

Ethan smiled.

She pointed at him. "Give me ten minutes."

He stepped away from the door. "I’ll wait outside."

Emilia closed the door. She leaned against it for a moment. Her heart was still beating too quickly.

She looked toward her phone.

The screen remained dark.

She didn’t touch it.

Instead, she changed into jeans and a warm sweater, brushed through her hair, and slipped on a pair of sneakers.

When she opened the door again, Ethan was waiting.

He looked at her. "Gorgeous."

Emilia frowned.

Ethan started walking beside her.

She glanced at him.

"Winter break starts next week." Ethan changed the topic, his voice a bit excited.

She stopped briefly. "Already?"

He nodded. "Time flies."

She followed him.

"You’ll have a lot of time to rest."

Emilia smiled faintly. "That’s assuming I survive the semester."

"You will."

They walked across campus.

The weather had become noticeably colder. The trees surrounding the university were beginning to lose their leaves, and students walked around in coats and sweaters.

Emilia kept her hands tucked inside her sleeves. She felt strangely disconnected from everything.

People laughed around them.

Someone hurried past with a stack of books. Two girls were arguing about an upcoming exam.

Everything was normal.

Too normal.

She wondered how many people would still look at her the same way if those photographs were released.

Her stomach tightened.

Ethan glanced at her. "You okay?"

She nodded. "Yeah."

He didn’t look convinced, but he didn’t push. They reached the cafeteria, and it was crowded.

The familiar noise immediately surrounded them.

Ethan grabbed two trays.

Emilia barely touched hers.

"You really aren’t hungry."

"I’m just tired."

He sat across from her. "Then eat a little."

She picked up her fork, and smiled faintly.

For a few minutes, things almost felt normal. Then her phone vibrated.

Emilia froze.

The sound seemed impossibly loud. Her eyes dropped toward her bag.

Ethan continued eating.

She stared at the bag, and her pulse accelerated. She didn’t want to check. She knew exactly what it could be.

Another vibration followed.

She swallowed.

Slowly, she reached inside. She pulled out her phone. This time, there were four new photos.

Her breath caught.

She opened them. The first photograph appeared. It wasn’t her. It was Adrian. Her eyes narrowed. She blinked.

He was standing against a wall with his suit slightly disheveled. A woman stood directly in front of him.

Emilia’s brows drew together.

She swiped.

The second photograph focused on another angle. The woman was closer now, and their faces were inches apart.

Her hand was positioned low against him.

Emilia’s stomach turned.

She swiped again.

The third photograph was from the same scene. The woman’s face was partially visible while Adrian’s expression was unmistakable.

The photograph had been taken at the charity event.

Emilia knew immediately because of the suit. The picture background looked like that of a rest room, but she’d seen him leave that night with that suit.

Her heart began pounding.

She swiped to the final photograph, and her stomach lurched.

The image was even clearer.

The woman was pressed close to Adrian, her face near his. It looked intimate. Too intimate.

Emilia’s throat tightened. She suddenly felt nauseous. She lowered the phone.

Ethan looked at her. He didn’t say anything. He simply watched her expression change.

Emilia stared at the table, and her fingers were trembling. She didn’t know the woman, and she didn’t know what had happened.

However, the photographs were designed to make her believe something, and they were working.

Her phone vibrated again.

Emilia’s eyes closed.

She didn’t want to read it. Eventually, she opened the message, and a sentence appeared beneath the photographs.

It read: "We make the deal, and you keep your reputation intact. You have two weeks to decide."

Her heart pounded.

Another line appeared.

"He would throw you under the bus if he should. His mission at Blackwood is more important than even his family."

Emilia stared at the words.

Her breathing became shallow.

Then came the final sentence. "Don’t think you’re any different."
