Kylie woke up slowly.
The first thing she noticed was the warmth. The second was the weight of an arm draped securely around her waist.
Her eyes opened. She paused for several seconds, completely still.
Her eyes widened when she remembered. "Oh, God."
She turned her head very slowly.
Christian was asleep beside her.
His face was turned slightly toward her, his blond hair disheveled in a way she’d never seen before. One arm was beneath his pillow while the other remained around her waist as though he’d fallen asleep holding her there.
Kylie stared at him, then at the room and then back at him. Her stomach performed a very unpleasant flip.
She carefully lifted Christian’s arm from around her waist. It was surprisingly difficult. He was heavier than he looked.
Kylie managed to slide out from underneath him and sat on the edge of the bed.
Her feet touched the floor, and she immediately winced. Two of her fingernails were broken.
She stared at them.
The nails on her index and middle fingers were both chipped badly, one split almost halfway down.
Kylie frowned.
She had no memory of breaking them. A few few scattered images returned. She remembered her hands gripping Christian’s shoulders, her fingers curling into his shirt, and her nails digging into his skin.
Her eyes widened. "Oh, no."
She looked over her shoulder. Christian’s back was facing her. There were faint red marks across one shoulder.
Kylie covered her mouth. She had apparently been considerably more enthusiastic about sex with him than she’d remembered.
She looked away. This was exactly why she didn’t do relationships. Relationships came with feelings. Feelings came with complications.
And Christian came with an entire personality designed specifically to irritate her.
Kylie reached for her clothes. Her black bra was hanging from the corner of a chair.
She stared at the mess in the room. "What happened to this room?"
A sleepy voice answered behind her. "You happened to this room."
Kylie froze. She slowly turned.
Christian was awake.
He was lying on his back now, watching her with sleepy amusement. His hair was still a mess. His eyes were half-open, and he looked far too pleased with himself.
She looked at Christian. "Why did you really come last night?"
He sat up. His expression became quieter. "I told you."
She rolled her eyes, and completed. "That you brought flowers."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Christian looked at her for a moment, then he shrugged. "Because I wanted to see you."
Kylie didn’t know what to say. She looked away. "Well..." She cleared her throat. "Mission accomplished."
Christian smiled. "Very successfully."
She shook her head. She didn’t need to remember anything else.
Kylie walked toward the bathroom, grabbed a robe, and wrapped it around herself.
When she returned, Christian was sitting up.
His hair was disheveled. His eyes followed her.
"Good morning."
Kylie stopped. She glared at him.
Christain glanced the apartment. "Your bed is comfortable."
Kylie folded her arms with a displeased expression across her face. "You should probably get dressed."
Christian looked down at himself, then at her. "I’m comfortable."
"You can’t stay here."
"Why?"
"Because this is my apartment." She gestured at him. "And you don’t live here."
He shrugged. "I haven’t decided to leave."
Kylie stared at him, dumbfounded. "You haven’t decided?"
"No."
She narrowed her eyes.
Christian climbed out of the bed, completely naked.
Kylie turned her face away instinctively. "Christian."
"What?"
"Put some clothes on!" She said firmly.
Christain chuckled. "Let’s not act like we weren’t both appreciating our bodies last night." He ran a hand through his hair. "Also, don’t forget the moment."
Kylie wrapped a hand across her shudders.
He smiked sweely at her, with his eyes crinkling at the corner. "I’m going to make coffee."
She looked back.
He was already walking toward the kitchen. Naked.
Kylie stared at his retreating back in disbelief. "Christian!"
He glanced over his shoulder. "Do you have coffee?"
Kylie grabbed a pillow and threw it at him.
He caught it, irritating her further.
"Yes," she snapped.
He disappeared into the kitchen.
Kylie stood there, stunned. "Silly."
His voice floated back. "I heard you."
She rolled her eyes. She started gathering her clothes from around the apartment. At that moment, her phone rang.
The sound immediately caught her attention.
She picked it up. The name on the screen made her expression change.
Emilia.
Kylie rubbed her eyes, suddenly more awake.
Her face softened.
She answered immediately.
"Hey, babe."
There was a brief silence. Then Emilia’s quiet voice came through.
"Kylie?"
Her tone made Kylie straighten. "Yeah?"
"Are you busy?"
Kylie glanced toward the kitchen.
Christian was making coffee as though he owned the place.
"No. What’s wrong?"
"Nothing."
Kylie knew that answer. She didn’t believe it. "Emilia."
"I’m okay."
"You don’t sound okay."
Another pause. Then Emilia spoke softly. "Can I come over to your dorm today after class?"
Kylie’s expression softened further. "Of course."
"Really?"
"Obviously."
Emilia exhaled quietly. "Thank you."
"You don’t have to thank me."
"I just..." Emilia hesitated. "I don’t really want to be alone."
Kylie’s eyes narrowed slightly. The warmth disappeared from her expression for a moment.
Something was wrong.
She didn’t know what yet, but she could hear it.
Kylie smiled faintly.
"My class ends at three. I’ll come over by five."
"Okay."
"And we’re making it a sleepover."
A tiny laugh came through the phone. "You’re sure?"
"Absolutely."
"Okay." Kylie leaned against the wall.
Emilia laughed softly again. "I love you, babe."
Kylie’s expression softened immediately. "I love you too."
"Thank you."
"Always."
The call ended.
Kylie stared at the screen for a moment.
She lowered the phone. Her expression remained thoughtful. She knew Emilia. Something wasn’t right.
She just didn’t know what.
A few seconds later, Christian walked back into the room. He was wearing his trousers now, though he had left his shirt behind.
He carried two cups of coffee, and pushed one towards her.
Kylie looked at the cup. She didn’t reach for it.
Christian frowned slightly. "You okay?"
"I’m fine."
He handed her one anyway.
Kylie ignored it.
She walked past him instead.
Christian watched her. She began picking up his clothes from around the apartment.
She picked up his shirt, his jacket, his shoes, and his belt. She gathered everything into her arms.
Christian raised an eyebrow. "What are you doing?"
She dropped the clothes into his hands. "You should start leaving." Her tone was casual, and almost cold.
Christian looked at her.
A moment ago, she’d been cool. Now there was nothing on her face. He held the clothes against his chest.
"Did something happen?"
"No."
"Kylie."
She walked toward the kitchen. "I have plans for today. I need to visit my friend today."
Christian’s expression changed slightly. "Is she okay?"
"I don’t know. She sounded upset." Kylie paused.
She moved over to the drawer, and picked up all the remaining packs of condoms from the floor, and placed them inside.
Christian nodded slowly. "And that’s why you’re suddenly kicking me out?"
Kylie folded her arms. "I’m not kicking you out." She exhaled. "I’m suggesting that you leave."
"That’s kicking me out."
She rolled her eyes.
Christian studied her.
The playful expression he’d worn earlier had disappeared.
"Are you regretting last night?" He asked cautiously.
Kylie looked at him.
For a moment, she didn’t answer. Then she shook her head. "No."
Christian’s eyes remained on hers.
She looked at him. "Last night happened." She mumured. "I never wanted it to, but I’m not pretending it didn’t." She swallowed. "So leave now. I don’t have sex with one person twice. Last night was your one and only."
Christian nodded.
He picked up his shirt, wore it, and walked toward the door.
Kylie followed behind him.
He stopped with his hand on the handle and looked back at her.
She expected another teasing remark.
Instead, he simply smiled. "Have a good day, Kylie."
She blinked. "You too."
He opened the door, then he paused.
"Fix those nails. I’ll pay for it."
She looked down at her broken fingers.
Her eyes narrowed. "Goodbye, Christian."
He laughed quietly and stepped into the hallway.
The door closed.
Kylie stood there.
She stared at it for several seconds. Then she looked down at her broken nails again.
She sighed. "Silly."
