Amelia’s curiosity sharpened. She sat up a little straighter in the massage chair, the rollers still pressing steadily into her back.
"Seriously." She tilted her head, studying Kate’s face. "How many of these are there?"
Kate leaned against the nearby wall, arms loosely crossed. "A lot. This college holds more secrets than most people can imagine. Centuries ago, this whole place was the site of a grand and powerful palace. After a war, it turned to ruins. They built the college on top of what was left... but they kept the secret pathways, the hidden rooms, and a few other things." She paused, a small, knowing smile playing at her lips. "Things that would probably get us both in serious trouble if anyone found out we knew about them."
Amelia’s fingers tightened slightly on the armrests. "Can you show me?"
Kate shook her head. "It’s not my place. But I could connect you with the others. You could be part of the group if you want."
"I’m not interested."
I can’t get involved in anything else.
"Alright." Kate accepted the answer without pressure, her shoulders lifting in a small shrug. "Just so you know, these pathways aren’t the only things we look into. There are old wars, lost treasures, secret organizations... like the Underworld Territory... and the rest.
Amelia’s entire body went still.
"Pause," she said quickly. "Repeat what you just said."
Kate blinked, clearly taken aback by the sudden intensity. She spoke more slowly, as if testing each word. "We investigate old wars, lost treasures, secret organizations like the Underworld Territory, and other things like that."
Amelia’s pulse picked up. "You know about the Underworld Territory?"
"There have been rumors spreading about it recently," Kate replied. "We want to find out if any of them are true."
For a long second Amelia said nothing. The soft hum of the massage chair filled the quiet. Then she looked straight at Kate.
This could be my way in. My way to fulfill the second condition. My way out.
"I want to join your group."
Kate’s eyebrows rose, genuine surprise flickering across her face. "What made you suddenly interested? A minute ago you said you weren’t interested at all."
Amelia chose her words carefully. "Because it sounds more interesting now." A beat of hesitation. "But... isn’t it dangerous?"
Kate gave a small, honest shrug. "Of course it is. We just don’t do more than we’re supposed to. We’re researchers, not soldiers. We gather information, we document what we find, and we stay out of the way when things get too heated.
Amelia nodded once, decision settling firmly in her chest.
"Then you should take me to meet the group."
Kate studied her for a second longer, then gave a short nod. "Alright." She pulled out her phone again, scrolling quickly through the live feeds and messages. "Looks like it’s actually over. We can start heading up."
Amelia switched off the massage chair. The rollers slowed and stopped. She stood and automatically turned toward the passage they had entered through.
"We’re not going that way," Kate said.
She walked to a different corner of the bunker, where the wall looked completely solid. Amelia followed. Kate pressed her palm against a section of concrete; a soft click sounded, and a narrow panel slid aside to reveal a steep staircase leading upward. They climbed in silence. At the top, Kate pushed open another hidden door.
They stepped out into a cleaning storage room. Tall metal shelves packed with cleaning supplies, buckets, and folded cloths lined the walls. The hidden entrance was nothing more than a section of wall that had blended perfectly behind one of the shelves.
Amelia stared. "Woah."
Kate’s mouth curved into a small, knowing smile. "If this can shock you, you should try imagining the other things."
They left the storage room and made their way back to the lecture hall. The corridors were still littered with scattered papers, bags and personal properties, and the lingering scent of dust and ozone.
Students moved in small, shaken groups, some helping others who were only just waking up. Amelia and Kate retrieved their bags from the lecture hall, then Amelia followed Kate out of the building and toward the lodge area.
Outside, the evidence of the earlier chaos was everywhere—split tree branches, torn banners, patches of scorched earth where lightning had struck, and a strange, faint reddish residue that still clung to some of the stone pathways. The sky above was clear again, but the campus no longer felt ordinary.
They walked past several of the student lodges until Kate stopped in front of a deep-blue building. The exterior was clean and modern, the windows reflecting the returned sunlight. Amelia followed her inside and up a flight of stairs. Kate unlocked a door on the second floor and pushed it open.
The dorm room was spacious. Two separate beds sat on opposite sides of the room, each neatly made, with desks and small wardrobes arranged against the walls. Soft light filtered in through the wide window.
Kate dropped her bag and sat on the edge of her bed with a heavy sigh.
"They better not be setting up another lecture after what just happened," she muttered. "One day of chaos is more than enough."
Amelia took the chair near the desk, setting her own bag down beside her. For a moment the room was quiet except for the faint sounds of students still moving around outside. Then a thought surfaced—sharp and sudden.
She looked up. "I want to ask you something."
Kate raised an eyebrow. "What is it?"
Amelia hesitated only a second, weighing the risk against the need. "Have you ever researched anything about the devilish brothers?
