Chapter 50: Chapter 50: Don’t take orders
The man floated a fraction closer. "Why not simply kill the queen? She’s weak right now. It doesn’t even look like she knows who she is."
The woman finally glanced at him "Because if we kill her, she reincarnates. Again. This isn’t the first time the queen has been put down. That ability is the one thing we’ve never been able to break. Death doesn’t end her—it only delays her."
She looked back toward Amelia, still held tightly in Enzo’s arms as the brothers cut their way through the chaos. "Removing the partners is better. In every lifetime she will watch them die. The trauma will accumulate. It will keep her more broken, more unwilling to step back into the role she once held. That is how we keep her out of the plans we have for this world."
The man was silent for a moment, then gave a short nod. "Understood. We should leave before the three of them notice us."
The woman inclined her head once. Their forms shimmered, the concealment magic folding tightly around them, and both figures vanished from the sky without a trace.
The chaos began to thin.
The last of the meteors struck empty ground. The remaining attackers fell under claws, blades, and raw alpha strength. Smoke still hung in the air, but the worst of the destruction was over. The ceremonial grounds looked like a battlefield.
Amelia felt the shift. The crushing pressure in the air eased. She lifted her head from Enzo’s chest.
"Put me down."
Enzo didn’t answer. He carried her straight to one of the black vehicles waiting beyond the ruined canopies, opened the rear door, and set her on the seat. His voice was flat when he finally spoke.
"Do not get out of this car."
The door shut in her face.
Amelia stared at the closed window for a second, then simply leaned back against the seat. She didn’t have the strength left to be annoyed. Her body still trembled with leftover adrenaline, but her emotions no longer felt like they were about to spill out and rewrite the sky. She was beginning to understand the connection now. Awareness gave her a thin thread of control she hadn’t possessed before.
She lifted a strand of her hair and studied the white streaks running through the red.
Did the powers do this too?
And if the powers were real... what had she been in those past lives? Someone important enough to bend weather. Someone nothing like the powerless, wolfless girl she had always believed herself to be. The contrast sat heavy in her chest, almost heartbreaking.
A sudden movement at the window made her flinch hard enough to press back into the seat.
A face was smashed against the glass. Lana. The twin’s eyes were wide with recognition. Her mouth moved rapidly, though the thick glass muffled every word. Amelia’s stomach dropped as memory caught up. The crew had planned to attend the ceremony.
Lana turned and waved frantically at someone behind her. "I knew it was her—look!"
Amelia pushed the door open and stepped out on unsteady legs.
Lila appeared a second later, followed by the rest of the group. Kai, Marcus, Theo... and Kate. All of them stared at the car, then at Amelia, with varying degrees of shock.
Kate recovered first. "You’re the devilish brothers’ wife."
Lila immediately smacked her sister’s arm and hissed, "You’ve been disrespecting the wife of the men the territories are terrified of. You’re in so much trouble."
"I’m not—" Amelia started, then stalled. The words tangled. She didn’t know how to finish the sentence.
Kate’s gaze stayed steady on her face. "Why didn’t you tell us?"
Amelia’s mind raced for a clean denial, something simple that would push the conversation away. Nothing came. She settled for the safest version she could give.
"I didn’t want it to change how people treated me at college. That’s why I kept it hidden."
Silence stretched for a few uncomfortable seconds. The group exchanged glances, the awkwardness thick enough to feel. Lana broke it without any sense of self-preservation.
"So how does it actually work? Do they just... put it all in you at the same time?"
"Lana!" The name came from nearly everyone at once. Lila’s hand shot out and connected with her sister’s arm. Lana only blinked, looking completely unbothered by the collective scolding.
Amelia’s face heated. She forced the next question out, desperate to change the subject. "Did you... watch the scene?"
Marcus gave a short nod. "Every second of it. The flower part wasn’t something we saw coming, though."
Kate folded her arms, still watching Amelia closely. "And it seems like the audience wasn’t also expecting it. I’d like to know what caused that."
Amelia kept her face as neutral as possible. "I have no idea. I was just doing what I was supposed to do. My duties." The words tasted bitter on her tongue.
Kate studied her for another beat, then let out a small breath. "It’s fine. You don’t have to feel weird that we know. We’re not going to start treating you like royalty if that’s not what you want."
Some of the tension in Amelia’s shoulders eased—until Kai spoke. "We can control how we act. Not how everyone else will. Videos of the whole thing are already spreading."
Oh shit. The realization landed hard. Impossible to take back. She had known the ceremony would be watched. But she hadn’t fully processed what it meant for the world beyond the estate gates.
Kate’s mouth gave a satisfied smirk. "That’s actually good. Those minions of Jane’s will finally see that they shouldn’t ever mess with you again."
Marcus nodded, already shifting into a more focused expression. "This is actually useful. We’ve been trying to dig up solid information on the Ellington brothers for months. Amelia might finally be able to answer some of it."
Theo’s voice was almost cautious. "Is it true they’re immortals?"
Kai added. "How did you even become their wife?"
Marcus followed immediately. "And how did you avoid getting killed by them?"
Kai’s eyes lit with sudden curiosity. "What style of seduction did you use? Classic? Aggressive? The ’I’m so fragile save me’ approach?"
Theo shot him a look. "Seduction doesn’t work on them."
Kai paused, then tried again, completely serious. "Okay, fair. So what supernatural seduction did you use? Some kind of ancient siren technique? Accidental pheromone overload?"
Amelia’s face was already burning when Kate stepped directly between her and the rest of the group, both hands raised. "All right, pause. Those questions are getting extremely personal. I don’t think Amelia is interested in giving a full PowerPoint presentation on how she ended up in their bed."
Lana’s hand shot up like she was in a classroom. Kate gave her a long, warning look. "This is a very harmless question," Lana said quickly. "I’m being serious."
Lana turned to Amelia, eyes wide with genuine curiosity. "Do you have feelings for the brothers?"
