Amelia kept the pink flower carefully between her fingers the entire way back to her room. Only when the door closed behind her did she set it down on the desk and stare at it.
Madame had said these flowers could boost powers. That was an incredible ability. But if the only way she could produce them was by getting... worked up... that felt almost insulting in its simplicity.
I can rewrite the weather with strong emotions, but for the rare power-boosting flowers I need to be horny? What kind of design is that?
Swifty was on the low table near the window, pecking methodically at the small dish of food. Amelia walked over and crouched so they were at eye level. "I know you’re my companion from the previous lives," she said quietly. "Is that why you didn’t want to leave?"
The silver bird paused, then fixed her with a distinctly unimpressed stare that somehow radiated pure exasperation.
Amelia huffed a soft laugh and gently rubbed the top of its head with one finger. "I’m glad you’re still willing to put up with me, even when you’re fed up."
She straightened and began changing out of her college clothes, speaking over her shoulder as she moved. "I got a lot of information today. I could really use your advice... even though you don’t actually talk."
Sitting at the vanity, she pulled the brush through her hair in long, steady strokes. "Since you’re from those lives, there has to be another way to make the flowers appear. I don’t have to make out with them every time, right?"
Swifty let out a short, clearly negative sound.
"C’mon."
The bird remained unmoved.
Amelia set the brush down and stared at her own reflection, still thinking aloud. "Strong emotions trigger weather changes. What else can I do?" She glanced at Swifty again. "Can I fly? That would actually be cool."
As if answering the challenge, Swifty launched off the table and made a neat circuit around the room before landing again, wings settling with obvious smugness.
Then something crossed her mind and her voice softened. "Did I... did I have a true partner in my past life? Was it the same person across the other lives too?"
Swifty turned its head away and refused to look at her.
The quiet rejection made something small and sore twist in her chest. "Is it that bad?" she asked. "Did I not have anyone who loved me? That’s... kind of heartbreaking."
She shook her head hard, pushing the thought aside before it could settle. "Never mind. Take care of yourself, okay? I have to go do the inevitable."
She left the room without looking back.
Behind her, Swifty kept its face turned toward the wall. The bird intentionally hid whatever expression had risen, determined that Amelia would not learn the truth too soon.
Amelia stepped into the corridor and almost immediately spotted a maid carrying a stack of folded towels. She raised a hand to stop her.
"Excuse me. Do you know where the masters are right now?"
The maid dipped her head. "They are in the gym room, miss."
"Could you show me the way?"
"Of course."
Amelia followed the woman down two flights of stairs and along a quieter stretch of the ground floor she had never fully explored. At the end the maid stopped in front of a heavy door and gestured toward it.
"They are inside."
Then she left without another word.
Amelia stood alone in front of the door for a moment. She closed her eyes and sent a brief, almost resigned prayer toward the Moon Goddess—fully aware that her prayers were usually either twisted into something unexpected or simply ignored. She had long since learned to accept the second option.
She knocked once.
No answer.
Drawing a steadying breath, she pushed the door open and stepped inside.
The gym was large and brightly lit against the darkness outside. Rows of weight racks, benches, and training equipment stretched across the polished floor. The air smelled faintly of metal and clean sweat. From deeper in the room came the rhythmic sound of exertion and a voice counting in a lazy drawl.
Amelia walked farther in until she saw them.
Dean was on a weight bench, arms driving through another set of heavy reps, silver-black hair tied back loosely. Reid straddled the bench near his head, one hand casually steadying the bar while the other kept count.
"Fourteen... fifteen... You’re slowing down. Starting to think you’re getting soft. Maybe all that sitting around is making you fat."
Dean’s only reply was a low, irritated grunt as he pushed through the next repetition.
At the side, Enzo was doing controlled pull-ups. A pair of heavy dumbbells rested steadily across the bridge of his feet, adding resistance with every clean, powerful lift of his body. Sweat traced the lines of his shoulders and the cut of his torso under the bright gym lights.
The combined scent of the three of them—clean sweat, heat, pure alpha—hit Amelia’s senses all at once. Her throat worked as she swallowed. They looked unfairly, ridiculously good.
Hot.
Mouth-watering.
She couldn’t even find proper words for it. All she could think about was running her hands over those chests, dragging her nails down those abs, feeling the weight of them over her, between her legs, inside her—
She pressed her thighs together hard and muttered under her breath.
"Behave. For once in your life, just behave."
The shift in the air was instantaneous.
Even with earbuds in, the three of them registered the sudden spike of her arousal. Their heads turned toward her at the same time. Pupils dilated. Reid was the first to move. He swung off the bench with an easy, predatory smile.
"Well, well. Enjoying the view that much?"
Amelia’s face burned.
"I—there’s something I need to talk to you about."
Dean sat up, dragging a towel across his face and the back of his neck. Loose strands of silver-black hair clung damply to his skin.
Had his hair always looked that soft? That unfairly beautiful? She thought.
Enzo dropped from the pull-up bar, dumbbells landing neatly on the floor. He pulled one earbud free.
"Whatever it is—can’t it wait?"
"No," Amelia said, forcing the word out. "It can’t."
Reid circled her slowly, the way a predator might test the edge of its territory. She tried—really tried—to keep her eyes on his face and nowhere lower than the hard lines of his abs. Her gaze betrayed her anyway, dropping for half a second too long.
He stopped directly behind her. The unmistakable press of his hard-on brushed against her lower back as he leaned in, his amused voice near her ear.
"You know your scent is already waking my little man up, right?"
Amelia’s mouth moved before her brain could stop it.
"I can understand and feel why its little..."
