Chapter 62: Chapter 62: its not small
Reid pulled back just enough to look down at her, genuinely offended. "It is not little."
Amelia lifted her shoulders in a careless shrug. "It is. I’ve seen better."
The words should have bounced off him. Instead a sharp, irrational spark of jealousy—or maybe just wounded pride—cut under Reid’s skin. The idea that she had seen anything larger than him sat wrong in a way he refused to examine.
His mouth curved into a mocking smile that didn’t reach his eyes. "Listen to you. Collecting comparisons like souvenir spoons. Must be exhausting ranking every poor bastard who’s ever dropped his pants in your general direction."
Dean wiped the back of his neck with a towel, completely unimpressed. "Stop getting defensive. It’s not like she’s wrong."
Reid’s head snapped toward him. "Excuse me?"
"You heard me."
"Oh, so now you’re an expert on my—"
"I’m just saying if someone points out the obvious—"
"There is nothing obvious—"
Enzo pressed the heel of his hand to his forehead and closed his eyes for a brief second, as if praying for patience he did not possess.
Amelia watched the exchange in pure disbelief. She had never seen this version of them before. She hadn’t even known it existed. She had honestly believed the three of them were just walking monuments of emotional constipation and violence with abs.
"Enough."
Both younger brothers fell silent. He dropped his hand and fixed Amelia with a flat, unamused stare. "Whatever you came here to ask had better be worth the interruption."
Amelia straightened, forcing her focus back where it belonged. "It’s about the Underworld Territory."
The shift in the room was immediate. All three expressions sharpened. Enzo’s tone turned cold. "Have your people already made contact with you?"
Frustration flickered across her face. "How many times do I have to say I have nothing to do with the Underworld Territory? But I do have an idea on how to get closer to them. I believe Dylan still has some kind of business relationship with them. It would explain the constant appearance of people using enhanced weapons for criminal activity in the Blacksmith Territory."
Enzo looked bored. "That isn’t new information. We already know about Dylan’s connections. You’ve wasted our time." He nodded toward the door. "Kindly get lost."
Amelia’s jaw tightened. Gosh, he is so casually, effortlessly infuriating.
Something inside her snapped.
A sharp rush of sudden and very reckless boldness flooded her chest. She lifted her chin and met Enzo’s gaze.
"Something can be different," she said. "Dylan isn’t nearly as smart as everyone thinks. I was the one who made his territory prosper. I handled the numbers, the negotiations, the actual work—while he smiled and took the credit. I thought the reward would be becoming his Luna. I was a fool. I won’t make that kind of mistake again."
She drew a breath and kept going.
"I also don’t want to stay tied to the three of you any longer than I have to. You should be equally motivated—maybe even eager—to cut ties with me as soon as possible. So let me go to the Blacksmith Territory. Let me dig into the connection with the Underworld. I’ll solve the mystery you so-called brilliant men have been chasing for over three years."
You could almost hear a pin drop in the silence that followed.
For a moment it felt as if the Night Menace had stepped forward and spoken through her mouth. Almost no one dared address them with that level of open challenge—only their mother, and a handful of people they actively preferred not to offend.
The instinct to punish, to make her regret every syllable, should have risen immediately.
It didn’t.
Instead something soft and yet far more dangerous stirred under their ribs—something none of them were willing to name.
Amelia misread the silence completely. Her pulse jumped. They’re deciding how to deal with me. I just insulted their intelligence to their faces. Torture is probably on the table. Wonderful.
"When do you want to go to the Blacksmith Territory?"
Amelia’s mind went blank. She opened her mouth, closed it again, and simply stared at him.
Enzo’s expression flattened further. "Don’t stand there gaping like a fish that just discovered air. Answer."
She forced the words out. "Tomorrow. We can go tomorrow."
Enzo gave a short nod. "Alright. We’ll send word tonight. It’s been a long time since we set foot in that territory anyway. Now we have a proper reason." He glanced at his brothers. "Any objections?"
Reid clicked his tongue but shook his head. Dean’s reply was a simple, quiet negative.
Enzo looked back at Amelia. "Is there anything else?"
She shook her head quickly.
"Then why are you still standing here?"
The boldness that had carried her through the last few minutes evaporated at once. Heat rushed to her face. She took a clumsy step backward, words tangling.
"I—right. I’ll just... yeah."
She turned and practically fled the gym, pulse hammering. One moment she had been sharp enough to challenge them outright; the next she couldn’t even exit a room with dignity. Something was seriously wrong with her.
By the time she reached her own door she had almost convinced herself the entire conversation had been a temporary lapse in sanity. She pushed it open—and froze. Skye was at the door, clearly about to leave.
Amelia pressed a hand to her chest. "You scared me. What are you doing in my room?"
Skye raised an eyebrow, completely unbothered. "What else would I be doing? I came to check on you."
Amelia stepped inside and let the door shut behind her. Skye’s gaze followed her with mild curiosity.
"Where did you go?"
"To talk to the brothers."
"Let me guess—still trying to negotiate your way out of the marriage?"
Amelia gave a short, humorless breath. "I wish. We’re going to the Blacksmith Territory."
Skye let out a soft, skeptical laugh. "And what makes you think those three would ever agree to a demand like that? Don’t let the ’wife’ title go to your head."
"They already agreed."
The amusement on Skye’s face vanished. For a second she simply stared. Rue’s earlier warning echoed in her mind about something soft is already growing in them. She had dismissed it as paranoia. Now the possibility felt uncomfortably real.
Amelia glanced at Swifty was curled up asleep. She didn’t think much of it.
"I’d like to come with you."
Amelia nodded without hesitation. "Sure. I don’t really want to be there alone anyway."
