Legendary Beast Cultivator

Chapter 110: Kill all of them for sake

Mistveil Ravine was far quieter than Lin Yuan had expected. The tall trees lined both sides of the path, their massive canopies intertwining high above to block out most of the midday sunlight. A pale mist hovered inches above the moist ground.

Lin Yuan took the lead, his footsteps calm against the ground.

Chen Ming followed behind, his eyes constantly observing the branches overhead. Lian Nichang walked beside him, his silver wolf beast’s silhouette lingering around his shoulder.

"Are we sure this is the area?" Chen Ming whispered, crouching under a low-hanging branch.

Lin Yuan stared down at the parchment in his hand. "Yeah, this is the spot."

"I don’t see a single sign of chameleon beast," Chen Ming looked around, frowning.

"That’s why it’s dangerous."

"Wait," Lian Nichang grunted, suddenly stopping mid-step, his eyes darting across the area. "Did that small boulder over there a second before?"

Chen Ming stared at a massive gray rock ten paces ahead. "That rock?"

A few seconds passed, but nothing moved.

"I don’t know, I guess you were seeing ghosts," Chen Ming scratched the back of his neck with a smirk.

Lin Yuan quietly locked his gaze on the rough stone on the ground. Without a word, he took a sharp pebble from the dirt and flicked his wrist.

The pebble struck the boulder. The gray stone rippled like liquid water. A pair of horizontal golden pupils snapped open in the stone.

"Holy shit, it’s alive!" Chen Ming flabbergasted, staggering backward.

The creature withered its camouflage in a blink, its scales changing rapidly from gray to forest green as it sprang off from the boulder.

"A Camouflage Chameleon!" Lian Nichang yelled, his beast essence flaring up.

The silver wolf beast lunged forward, snapping its jaws shut inches from the beast’s tail.

The Chameleon twisted mid-air, attempting to scramble into the undergrowth, but Lin Yuan had closed the distance.

Lin Yuan thrusted an emerald-infused palm strike into the creature’s side, blasting it sideways against a pine trunk.

Screech!

Chen Ming’s wind-falcon descended down from the mist, its wings slicing through the air. A pressurized crescent of wind slammed across the Chameleon’s spine.

Lian Nichang’s wolf followed up instantly, its paws crushing the creature against the ground. The beast groaned once and went limp.

"That’s surprisingly fast," Chen Ming muttered, nudging the corpse with his leg.

Lin Yuan didn’t lower his guard. His eyes darted across the shadowy pathway, his senses humming with tension. "It wasn’t hunting alone."

Chen Ming froze, petrified listening to the words. "What do you mean?"

"Look closer at the pathway," Lin Yuan nodded, gesturing toward the surrounding forest.

Chen Ming squinted against the light. At first, there was only moss, bark, and dead leaves.

Then, a pair of golden eyes blinked on a branch. Then another opened on a nearby boulder. Another along a root. And another right above their heads. There are dozens of faint outlines slowly lingering through the surroundings. The trees, rocks, vines, and mossy banks seemed to remove their disguise all at once.

The ravine was crawling with them.

"Just how many are here?" Lian Nichang gulped, his clenched hands trembled slightly.

Lin Yuan’s eyes turned cold and calm. "At least a dozen."

"You couldn’t have pointed that out before I called it easy?!" Chen Ming clicked his tongue, nodding slightly.

"They weren’t moving earlier," Lin Yuan murmured.

"That doesn’t make me feel any better!"

Half a dozen whip-like tongues shot out from the bushes vehemently. The three disciples moved instantly, diving in opposite directions. A tongue slammed into the ground where Chen Ming had just been standing, shattering the rock into debris.

"You sticky bastards!" Chen Ming yelled, sliding to his feet as his Wind-Falcon soared high into the canopy.

Lian Nichang’s Wolf darted through the bushes like lightning.

Lin Yuan stood still, tracking the subtle changes of light through the mist. Their camouflage isn’t seamless.

Every time a Chameleon moved or struck, its scales experienced a second delay before blending into the new background.

That tiny fraction of a second was all he needed. "Nichang, five o’clock on the low branch!"

Lian Nichang pivoted instantly, trusting the call without question. His Wolf leaped into the blind spot.

A camouflaged beast was ripped from the branch, crashing hard into the ground. Chen Ming’s Wind-Falcon sliced through the canopy with an immense speed.

A wind blade shredded the leaves, slicing through another Chameleon’s shoulder and bringing it down.

Lin Yuan lunged forward, stepping inside the guard of an incoming strike and thrusting a brutal fist straight into a third creature’s chest.

The beast moved aside, its body leaping across the ground like a stone thrown across water.

Chameleons struck from every angle. Some clung to tree trunks disguised as bark; others hid themselves against rocks; one even shifted its scales to match the moss right under Lin Yuan’s legs, attempting a sneak attack from below.

But the three disciples quickly found their patterns of attack.

Chen Ming held aerial dominance, his falcon spotting ambushes from above and breaking their cover with wind blades. Lian Nichang’s Wolf hunted down anything attempting to hide through the surroundings. Lin Yuan stood calm as the vanguard, killing every beast that dared close the distance.

After ten grueling minutes of exchanging blows, nine Rank Three Chameleons lay dead across the area, their camouflage fading into a dull, lifeless gray.

The remaining three beasts froze on the branches, their golden eyes wide with sudden terror. They realized they were just mere prey.

Without looking back, they scattered. One darted straight up into the canopy, another vanished under the thorn bushes, and the third sprinted frantically into the ravine.

Chen Ming recalled his Wind-Falcon to his shoulder, panting slightly. "Should we chase them down?"

"No," Lin Yuan said, smearing sweat from his forehead. "We have more than enough."

Lian Nichang nodded in approval, drawing his hunting knife. The three disciples began extracting the beast cores from the fallen predators. Each core was pulsing with a faint, translucent green light.

Chen Ming counted the cores in his palms. "We have more than required cores now!"

"These three go to the Mission Hall counter," Lin Yuan immediately took three beast cores and placed them into a sect requisition pouch.

Chen Ming raised an eyebrow. "The task only asked for only one."

"Haha if we give three, any of them will guarantee maximum contribution points and cover any impurity," Lin Yuan replied smoothly.

Lian Nichang laughed, sheathing his dagger. "You’re getting more calculating day by day, Lin Yuan."

Lin Yuan ignored the banter, carefully keeping the remaining six cores into his spatial ring.

Those six cores were the real reason he had taken the mission. Still, Chen Ming and Lian Nichang had done their fair share of the efforts. Lin Yuan reached into his bag, pulling out four other Rank Three beast cores he had saved until now.

"Here," Lin Yuan said, offering two to each of them. "For your share of the hunt."

"Put those away, you crazy boy," Chen Ming immediately folded his arms, shaking his head. "We will get the sect points."

"Those are yours, Lin Yuan," Lian Nichang agreed, placing a hand on Chen Ming’s shoulder "You tracked their shelter and took the vanguard of the attacks, you can have them, we won’t need any alternatives for them."

"Ahh... You can have this, it’s not a problem, Nichang and Chen," Lin Yuan insisted, holding them out.

"We fought together as a team, didn’t we?"

"Exactly," Lin Yuan countered. "Which is why you should accept this."

"I said no," Chen Ming shoved Lin Yuan’s hands back.

Lin Yuan pushed forward again. "Take the goddamn beast cores now."

"No," Both of them nodded at a time.

"Take them."

"Lin Yuan, stop!"

"Chen Ming, take the cores."

The two stood nose-to-nose, staring at each other over the shimmering crystals.

Lian Nichang rubbed his face with both hands, groaning in exasperation. "I can’t believe I’m watching two brats aggressively fight over treasure."

"See who was saying," Lin Yuan let out an annoyed breath. "Fine."

He grabbed Chen Ming’s wrist, forcefully slapped two cores into his palm, and clamped the fingers shut over them. "These are yours. Shut up."

"Hey!"

He turned and did the same thing to Lian Nichang. "And these are yours."

Lian Nichang stared at the shimmering orbs in his hand, and couldn’t say a word against him. "You’re forcing us to take these cores?"

"Yes, what’s with that dumb question?"

Chen Ming looked at Lian Nichang with a helpless gaze. "Fuck, its fine!"

"Keep them before he starts throwing them at our foreheads," Lian Nichang muttered, laughing slightly

Lin Yuan nodded approvingly. "Smart choice, Nichang!"

By twilight, the three disciples had returned to Red Talon Hall. They handed over the required cores at the Mission Hall counter. The elder verified the quality, took their tokens and transferred the 180 contribution points along with the bonus without any hassle.

"Not bad for an afternoon’s work," Chen Ming checked the shimmering numbers on his red jade token, grinning widely.

Lian Nichang stretched his arms, smiling. "At least we didn’t run into a Rank Six monster this time."

Lin Yuan walked alongside them in silence, his mind already locked on the night ahead. ’Six pristine Chameleon cores... Let’s see what my turtle can do.’

The night quickly fell over the outer peaks. Lin Yuan returned to his quarters, shutting the wooden door.

He checked the room’s surroundings, ensuring the windows were closed. And he sat cross-legged on the floor mat beside his bed.

"Come out," Lin Yuan called out his turtle, and a faint ripple distorted the air.

The turtle beast appeared on the mat, blinking its sleepy eyes before staring at the six green cores Lin Yuan laid out in a row. "Hahaha... We need to get into cultivation after a long while."

"Save the banter later," Lin Yuan said, nudging the cores forward. "Consume them and extract the essence."

The turtle opened its jaws and swallowed the cores one by one. The faint, jade-colored patterns slowly lit up across its shell, throbbing in rhythm with Lin Yuan’s breath.

Lin Yuan closed his eyes and entered into meditation, guiding the extracted essence through his meridians into his aperture. Time slowly slipped away in the silent room.

After eight hours of cultivation, the energy within the turtle slowly refined into a smooth, translucent layer, coating the wall of Lin Yuan’s aperture.

Finally, the turtle let out a long, satisfied breath, opening its small eyes. "That should do it."

"How long will the concealment hold?" Lin Yuan opened his eyes, feeling the new layer resting over his core.

"As per the purity of six cores... roughly four months," The turtle murmured, nodding its head lazily.

Lin Yuan raised an eyebrow. "Four months, huh?"

"Your secondary beast auras won’t leak a drop for four months. Even that sharp-eyed Sect Master won’t pick up on the white tigers unless you summon them into the world," The turtle elucidated.

Lin Yuan’s shoulders relaxed slightly. "Good!"

The turtle’s voice suddenly turned serious. "Don’t get cocky, kid."

Lin Yuan looked down at it.

"These cores are just temporary. If you want permanent, passive concealment that grows alongside your cultivation..." The turtle paused, its eyes glinting, "you’ll need to tame a high-rank chameleon Beast and bond its innate wilderness into your soul."

"Now, if I tamed another beast even according to its will, my aperture will burst into a thousand pieces," Lin Yuan let out a weary sigh, holding his forehead. "We have four months, let’s see what happens."

"Naturally," the turtle snickered, and amused. "Don’t act like a victim. You’re the crazy bastard running around collecting legendary beasts like wild food."

Lin Yuan’s mouth twitched. "Fair enough!"

He closed his eyes once more as the turtle vanished back into the ring. Lin Yuan swirled his beast essence inside his aperture.

The pressure generated by the twin white tigers was swallowed under a calm layer of refinement.

"Flawless!" Lin Yuan opened his eyes and looked at his palms, a faint, confident smirk appearing on his lips. And he laid on the bed flat, closing his eyes and fell asleep.
