Legendary Beast Cultivator

Chapter 109: Cruelty and Opportunity

The twenty-year-old young Noir stumbled through a narrow, filthy house under the eerie crimson moon of the Magic Kingdom.

His breathing was frantic and shallow. Thick blood trickled from the corner of his mouth as he desperately tried to erase the remnants of a forbidden ritual circle from the cobblestone floor.

A fading, dark formation remained slightly under his legs. The black tallow candles, dried blood, and a few jagged, forbidden runes are placed on the formation. And at the center, there was a jagged soul crystal containing a faintly pulsing soul flame.

"Just a little more..." Noir stared at the flame with feverish, frenzy eyes.

His fingers trembled as he gathered another thin streak of magical energy straight into the formation’s core.

"If this breakthrough succeeds, I can finally—"

The wooden door behind him blew apart into splinters.

Noir froze, staggering a bit backward. An armored man walked through the broken door. He was the captain of the Astalmere kingdom’s royal enforcers. His silver plate armor was scratched and stained from brutal scars, and a broadsword hung calmly at his hip.

His cold eyes landed immediately on the black formation. Then, they darted toward Noir.

"You..." The captain’s face spasmed with pure malice.

Noir’s face was filled with disdain. "C-Captain..."

"You filthy, little gutter rat," The captain cursed, rushing toward Noir in two strides.

Noir scrambled backward against the wall and stuttered. "Wait! I can explain! It was only—"

An armored gauntlet smashed into Noir’s stomach. His hand clenched his stomach and he bent in agony instantly.

"ARGH!" Noir yelled in pain. He leaned against the wall, gasping for air vehemently.

Before he could even hit the ground, another vicious punch struck his jaw. Thick blood splashed on the wall from his mouth along with a broken tooth.

The captain slammed Noir by the collar of his attire, lifting him off his feet with one arm. "You were already warned once!!"

"I-I was only trying to stabilize my core—" Noir grunted, his eyes squinting rapidly.

"Only what?" The captain slammed him onto the stone floor. "You think the kingdom’s warnings are mere suggestions?"

Noir coughed again, spitting blood. The captain’s leg struck straight into his ribs. Noir yelled in pain rippled through his chest.

"You’ve been caught twice experimenting with forbidden soul rituals," the captain shouted, driving another kick into his side ribs. "Twice! And yet you still have the guts to deny the warning?"

"P-please..." Noir curled, his knees touching his head and desperately shielding his head with his forearms. "L-leave me... I-I a-am sorry!!:

"Do you have any idea what this forbidden filth does?" The captain reached down, grabbed Noir’s hair, and yanked his head up, forcing his eyes toward the ritual.

Noir remained silent, trembling.

"It will open the veil between the living and the darkness," the captain yelled into his ear. "If this unstable mess had burst out, the backlash would have killed every one in this lower district."

"I... I had this ritual under control..." Noir quivered, his voice cracking slightly.

The captain stared at him for a second. Then, he burst into harsh, mocking laughter.

"Hahahahaha!! Under control?" He spat on Noir’s bruised cheek. "You’re nothing more than a pathetic maggot playing with natural forces that would turn your mind crazy."

Noir’s fingers dug into the stone floor. The captain pulled back his leg. For a second, Noir braced for another blow. Instead, the captain lowered his foot, looking down at him with disgust.

"I’m leaving you breathing today,"

Noir blinked through the blood in his eyes.

"Don’t make the mistake again, boy." The captain leaned down, his voice changing into a chilling whisper. "If I catch you near a forbidden ritual one more time... I won’t bother hitting you."

He snapped Noir’s head back down against the ground.

"I’ll give your name to the High Inquisitors. And when that happens..." A cruel smirk spread across the captain’s face. "You’ll be dead meat before the next sunrise."

Noir lay still on the cold cobblestones.

"Clean up your own filth," The captain commanded, turning toward the shattered doorway.

He paused at the door, looking back one final time. "And thank whatever forgotten gods you pray to that I still consider you worth a final warning."

Noir’s bloody fingers slowly clenched into tight fists. His body throbbed with agony, every breath giving stabbing pain through his cracked ribs.

But under his bloody brows, his dark eyes stared into the ruined ritual circle.

’Hatred! Frustration! And ambition!’ Noir thought, grinding his teeth. ’One day... I will never have to beg on my knees for anyone’s mercy ever again.’

The dark memory vanished into thin air, and Lin Yuan’s eyes snapped open in tense.

"Ah..." Lin Yuan groaned, his vision was slightly hazy. The first thing that was visible was the plain wooden beam ceiling of his room.

"HE’S AWAKE! LIN YUAN IS ALIVE!" Chen Ming’s deafening shout nearly scared him suddenly.

Lin Yuan slowly turned his head, wincing slightly. Chen Ming was sitting on the edge of the wooden stool right beside the bed, while Lian Nichang stood by the window, both carrying dark circles under their eyes.

Chen Ming grabbed Lin Yuan’s shoulder, shaking him frantically. "How many damn times are you going to give us heart attacks, you bastard?!"

"Once more, perhaps," Lin Yuan blinked, his voice slightly raspy.

"What?!"

Lian Nichang burst into loud laughter, crossing his arms.

"You literally had a Rank Six monster hovering over your face!" Chen Ming’s face twitched in exasperation. "You were a second away from becoming spider food!"

"I’m still breathing," Lin Yuan said calmly.

"That is not the point!"

Lin Yuan rubbed his aching forehead. "How long was I out?"

"Twenty-four hours," Chen Ming replied, throwing his hands up.

Lin Yuan paused, slightly surprised. "...That long?"

Chen Ming opened his mouth to give an another lecture—

A small pebble flew through the doorway, striking Chen Ming on the back of his head.

"Ouchhhh! What the—" Chen Ming groaned, turning around furiously. "Who the hell threw that—"

The words died in his neck as soon as he saw the Sect Master Xue Hongzhao was standing calmly in the doorway, his crimson robes fluttering against the wind slightly as he folded his arms.

Chen Ming gulped, immediately standing to his feet and bowing. "S-Sect Master!"

"You were saying something?" Xue Hongzhao raised an eyebrow.

"Nothing, sir! Just expressing my gratitude for your arrival!"

Lin Yuan couldn’t help but let out a quiet snort of amusement.

"How was your aperture now, brat?"Xue Hongzhao walked to the side of the bed, his gaze assessing Lin Yuan’s composure.

"Much better," Lin Yuan answered calmly. "The beast essence has settled."

"Good." Xue Hongzhao’s voice became calm slightly, carrying a tone of apology. "The sect’s scouting division failed to clear the lower caves before issuing collection tasks. A mutated Rank Six beast sheltering near us was an unacceptable oversight. That mission slip should never have been pinned to the board."

"It’s fine, master!" Lin Yuan waved his hand normally.

Xue Hongzhao offered a nod of approval. "Regardless of the chaos, you two completed the requirements. You defeated a Rank Three Spider and retrieved its core even when rank six appeared."

Chen Ming’s eyes lit up instantly. "Wait... so we will get the reward, master?"

"Obviously," Xue Hongzhao smiled faintly. "Your identity tokens have already been credited with the contribution points for the task."

Chen Ming pumped his fist silently. "Yes! Finally!"

’Haha!’ Lin Yuan shook his head with a faint smile. ’This guy only exists for contribution points and roasted meat.’

The rest of the day passed quietly as Lin Yuan stabilised his beast essence, allowing his body to calm.

By the following morning, his strength had returned, and he stepped out into the mountain air of the outer courtyard.

He had barely taken five paces, then a sudden yell faltered him.

"LIN YUAN!"

Chen Ming came sprinting down the walkway like a madman, waving a sheet of parchment over his head.

Lin Yuan halted, raising an eyebrow. "What now?"

"You were checking the mission boards for chameleon beast missions yesterday morning, weren’t you?" Chen Ming skidded to a halt, panting slightly with a grin.

"You found one?" Lin Yuan asked anxiously.

"Yes, freshly placed ten minutes ago," Chen Ming said proudly, showing the folded parchment to Lin Yuan.

Lin Yuan opened the mission slip, his gaze scanning the clean ink:

>>Red Talon Hall — Outer Sect Commission<<

Mission Name: Chameleon Beast Core CollectionLocation: Mistveil Ravine, Western Outer RidgeTarget: Rank Three Camouflage ChameleonObjective: Retrieve one Rank Three Chameleon beast coreRecommended Party: 2–4 Outer DisciplesReward: 180 Contribution PointsBonus: +30 Contribution Points for an undamaged core

Mission Details: A few mutated Chameleon Beasts have recently appeared upon the borders of Mistveil Ravine, repeatedly ambushing the sect’s medicinal herb gatherers. Their adaptive scales and natural aura-suppression make them difficult to track. Three days ago, an outer harvesting unit was forced to abandon their route due to these beasts. The Alchemy Division requires an intact Rank Three Core to analyze their concealment traits.

Lin Yuan’s dark eyes locked onto the final lines. This was what he needed.

If he could locate and refine one into his aperture or extract its pure essence from the core, the turtle can use the concealment method to mask his multi-beast aura from other wandering elders.

Lin Yuan folded the mission slip and tucked it into his robe. "Let’s move."

"Wait, right now? Just the two of us?" Chen Ming blinked, scratching his head.

"Why? Are you waiting for a food box?"

"We haven’t even dragged Lian Nichang out of bed yet!"

Lin Yuan turned toward the dormitory window. "Lian!"

A few seconds later, the wooden shutters creaked open. Lian Nichang leaned out, rubbing his sleepy eyes, his hair a messy birds-nest. "Are you two plotting another near-death mission already?"

"Sect mission," Lin Yuan said, tossing the parchment onto the window.

Lian Nichang caught it, checking the details.

"The Rank Three Chameleon beasts in Mistveil Ravine?" His sleepy expression turned into a keen, focused gaze. "A beast with camouflage... Hehehe! That sounds interesting."

Chen Ming grinned widely. "Then it’s settled. Grab your things, Let’s move!"

The three disciples gathered their supply packs and made their way out of the outer gates, taking the path toward the western ridge.

Lin Yuan walked along the mountain path, a cold, confident smirk touching his lips. ’This time... I’m gonna make it.’
