At the same time, Dion was outside talking to everyone.
Within moments of Julian scarfing down the food that had been given to him, he immediately leaned back with a heavy, dreamy sigh.
Just a short time ago, Florence had been entirely set on eating. Her appetite had gotten going, and she was even faintly smiling at the food.
Her curiosities about what Paris might want this side had been temporarily buried under all of that frothing desire.
But then, through the door, she could hear their voices. Office walls were damned thin after all.
"Jules... don’t make noise, okay? We don’t want to get Dion in trouble for giving us food." Florence lowered the plastic utensil, her hand shaking that little bit as she processed what she was hearing from Dion’s conversation with Paris.
"Ok..." he hushed.
Florence released a shaky breath, her eyes widening and her neck reddening once more. Her heart raced as shivers or urgency flooded her body.
She had to clench her fist to keep herself from shaking so much that Jules might notice. Her chest tightened, and her breathing held, and she sat very still against the desk for several seconds.
’He needs to go to Novamed?’ Her chest tightened at the thought, and she felt herself go very still.
She pressed her lips together and swallowed, and her eyes went to Julian’s head.
Dion and Paris continued to speak, and then she eventually heard more people approaching.
She listened through what Dion told them, desperately controlling raging anxiety as she used all kinds of breathing techniques she knew, as subtly as she could.
And eventually, she heard them agree that the others would go as far as the pharmacy together and then they would split off from Dion.
Soon thereafter, heard their footsteps going down the stairwell, and then the corridor outside went quiet except for the two voices of Dion’s and Paris.
With her blood rushing, she already felt herself in a rather heightened state. And whatever it was in the air, that sweetness she had been smelling and tasting in the rain since it began, it had to have something to do with this.
But in her vision, though they had only briefly known each other, something about the sensation around him...
Hearing that he needed to head to Novamed, everything that she had seen of him since his arrival... all the bloody, louche, and... frightening spectacle of it all, flashed through her vision so vividly it felt as if she were reliving witnessing it all.
A part of this grandiose expression, she could not lie, had been torn apart when he had done what he had earlier. But to hear that he had thought it out so well...
Without him, there would have been nothing stopping them from doing exactly as he had said to her.
And now... to hear that the same person who had saved their lives twice by now essentially was going to be leaving for exactly where she needed to go...
’But with what he was just saying to Paris... and how resistant he was to even bringing him along when he’s awakened, there is no way he’d take the two of us who will only be a burden.’ Her lips pursed tightly, ’And those injuries of his... they look like they had healed from the state they had been in during the fight a little. Coupled with that, considering how dismissive he is of the medicine... my skills aren’t of much value to him at all. Not when he’s got to fight so hard to defend himself at least.’
She was briefly brought out of her thoughts, feeling Jules shuffle in her lap as he pulled Einstein off of the table and tucked him under his chin.
Florence took a deep breath. There was no way they could miss out on the chance to leave with him.
Anton’s group... they were, unfortunately, not in any state to be leaving soon, and even if they did... it’s just as they said, many people will die out there if, and they do.
Should she wait here with Julian... they’re one of the first kinds of burdens desperate people would try to leave behind.
And so, swallowing down through her dried throat, Florence thought about what she had to offer to someone like Dion, who had no logical reason to risk his life taking them along and protecting them when he had no obligations to either of them...
’And he’s already done more for us than we could have asked for....’
She had nothing. No strength, no ability, no leverage. Nothing that would make him say yes if she asked him to take them with him.
Nothing except one thing.
Then the voices outside shifted, and she heard Paris mention them, the woman and the boy, asking where Dion had taken them.
Florence looked at Julian, shifting him awake from the sleep he had tried to let take him. She reached over and brushed the hair from his forehead, giving him her best smile before she spoke.
"Jules," she said softly. "I need you to go be with Paris for some time, okay? I need to have an adult conversation with Dion."
Julian stirred, and his eyes opened halfway as he rubbed his face against his arm and sat up.
"...The one who saved Einstein from before?"
"Yes, that’s Paris, remember?"
Julian only faintly hummed as he held the bear against his chest and looked at the door, and then he looked back at her, his mind finally catching up to him and remembering who had just been with them.
His eyes glittered wonderfully, almost in spite of how even his expression looked as he asked, "Can Bro Dion be my uncle? I like him."
She held his face in her hand for a moment, her thumb rubbing over his cheek, and she managed a small nod as her throat tightened.
How could she bring herself to tell him that Dion was leaving within the next hour, and they might never see him again when he gave her that look?
"I’ll try to ask him."
