"The people I was talking to before I came to find you," Paris said. "Some of them mentioned you brought a woman and a boy up here. The kid, he’s... where did you take them? They’re the only one’s I’ve spoken to while being here."
"They’re in there," Dion said, tilting his head toward the door behind him. "There had been an issue with people harassing Florence for food she had saved for herself and Julian, so I brought them here for the meantime."
Before Paris could respond, the door opened.
Florence brought herself into the doorway with Julian at her side, the bear pressed against his chest.
Her eyes moved from Dion to Paris, and she looked at the younger boy for a moment with a smile as she spoke.
"Hi, Paris."
Paris’s mouth was about to open when suddenly, Julian’s burp rumbled along with the rain and wind.
"Acuse me..."
Dion laughed a little to himself there, ’Acuse?’
"... Paris, would you be able to watch Julian for a little while for me?" She set Julian down for him to walk on his own, her hand on his shoulder as she gently nudged him forward. "I need to talk to Dion about something."
Julian crossed the space between them without hesitation and stood beside Paris, looking up at him.
Then Julian’s attention bounced over to Dion. And then back to Paris.
"What’s up, Julian?"
"Pairish... Are you still feeling sick?" he asked with a slight frown to his brows.
"No, I’m feeling fine now, thank you for asking."
"Hm..." Julian gave him a very serious look, and then a careful nod. "Okay. Lets go. I want more water, please."
Without waiting for anything else, Julian pulled Paris along, leaving behind the words, "I’ll be back with Pris soon!"
Paris looked back at Dion with a nervous helplessness, and Dion only gave him a laughing shrug.
Dion looked over to Florence who was smiling to herself watching them leave.
"Is he always so wilful?"
"...He doesn’t get to do it much because of how picky he is about who he likes... but he really lets loose when he finds someone he likes."
Dion walked across as Florence stepped aside from the doorway.
"I should consider myself more lucky than I had initially thought then, huh."
Dion walked past her into the room, and she closed the door behind him. T
"... More than you’d think,"
The click of it shutting was dulled by the commotion, and when he turned she was standing with her back against the door with her hands at her sides.
"So, what did you want to talk about?" he asked, glancing over to the table to find her food untouched.
He would have asked her about it then, but suddenly, he heart her hammering heart.
And he hadn’t immediately noticed it when he walked in because of the strong saturation of prana in the air... but her agitation hadn’t started just now.
She had been very nervous while he was outside, and that scent filled the room not to the point where with him now aware of it, it dragged his heart to into his throat right when he thought he was doing so well managing his desire.
Her breathing was steady, but her fingers were pressing into the fabric of her trousers at her thighs, and her eyes held his without wavering.
"I wanted to ask you to take Julian and me with you to Novamed."
Dion looked at her, and his expression did not change, but something behind it tightened.
"Florence, don’t be so cruel to me."
"I’m asking."
"And you already know the answer."
His voice was not unkind, but it was firm.
Although, to what extent he was being firm against her in comparison to for himself, he really didn’t know. His head was starting to feel a little loose and cloudy.
"You heard what I said out there. It’s too dangerous. I can’t take a woman and a five-year-old through what’s waiting outside this building. It would be putting both of you at a risk that I can’t protect you from and live with myself if it goes wrong. So no, I can’t."
"I understand that, and honestly, I know you’re right. There’s no reason for you to take us. We’d slow you down, and we have almost nothing that would make you consider it being anywhere near worth the risk."
She paused briefly and her lips pursed as her fingers stopped pressing into her thighs, and her hands came to the bottom of her shirt.
"But I’m not asking you to do it for free."
She pulled the shirt over her head as swiftly as she could, freeing herself of hesitation.
The shirt landed on the floor off to the side them, and the dark blue sports bra she was wearing beneath it drowned his attention for several moments.
Florence stood without trying to cover herself.
And at the same time, in her moments of action, the scent of her blood sank him deeper into the whatever decadent reverie he had been teetering on the edge of all this time.
The dryness of desire and hunger itched throughout his body, and burned through his chest as he involuntarily took a deeper breath.
The last time he had felt anything remotely this compelling... he had nearly killed Anastasia.
He tore his eyes away from her, looking anywhere else but as his jaw tensed.
"I’m not asking you to feel anything about it," she said. Her chin was raised and her voice was steady, as she took a careful step forward. "I’m offering you the only thing I have worth anything now in exchange for what I’m asking. That’s all this is."
"You should put the shirt back on." His voice came out harder than he intended, nearing a growl.
"..."
Florence didn’t say anything as she reached for the waistband of her trousers.
Her fingers found the button and undid it and she pushed them down past her hips and stepped out of them in two motions, one leg and then the other, and she left them on the floor beside the shirt.
’To hell with begin a Sanguinis. I only become depraved as a consequence of it,’ He cursed himself.
After all, as much as his mind wanted him to leave, with the warmth spreading through him, and the rapturous sensation filling him, he had to war within himself to even continue considering it.
