Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 26: The Collector Who Understands Him

Theodore heard her from the doorway. He had come up alone. Caleb and Elijah remained below with the unstable chambers and the nameless heir. Before Theodore could answer, the eastern barrier buckled. A metallic groan crossed the hall. Blue light bent inward over the plaza with a traffic signal trapped inside it. The pole struck the field, hung briefly, then punched through. Panic drove survivors toward the center. One man fell. A child broke free and froze beneath the descending metal.

Theodore understood Jace well enough to stop using moral language. He talked in failure rates, survivable loads, and bodies that had lived because someone accepted authority quickly. That made him harder to dismiss. Jace had expected a jailer. He had gotten a man who could explain exactly why the cage worked.

Theodore crossed the distance before Jace finished trying to stand. He placed himself beneath the pole, caught it across both forearms, and drove one knee into the pavement. Stone cracked beneath him. Blue light spilled over his shoulders.

EMERGENCY STRUCTURAL LOAD

Mass: 1,840 kilograms.

Barrier Support: INSUFFICIENT.

Civilian Impact Projection: FATAL.

Theodore held it anyway.

"Move the child," he said.

Seraphina did. The woman seized the child and disappeared into the hall while Theodore turned the pole aside. It struck the plaza hard enough to shake dust from the Spire doors. He rose without favoring either arm. Jace opened Breach Sight.

TARGET ANALYSIS: THEODORE VOSS

Level: 438.

Current Class: SUNCHAIN COLLECTOR.

Recovered Class: HEIR.

Original Specialization: CONTINUITY RESISTANCE.

Authority Grade: NOBLE III.

Pain Response: REMOVED.

Corruption Load: 0%.

Fear Response: REMOVED.

Theodore saw the scan and did not object.

"You were an heir," Jace said.

"I remain one by origin."

"That is not what your class line says."

"No. It is not."

Theodore looked toward the street instead of Jace. Barrier light revealed black-gold lines beneath his wrists. The pole had torn both sleeves. His arms should have bruised. Nothing changed.

Seraphina noticed it too. "You caught almost two tons."

"Yes."

"Did it hurt?"

"No."

The answer came without pride. Theodore flexed one hand as if checking a tool. The movement was perfect. Any damage had been classified and removed before his face received notice.

HIDDEN MERCY OBJECTIVE

Subject: Theodore Voss.

Objective: Allow one independent act of aid not required by Sunchain protocol.

Current Status: POSSIBLE.

Failure Condition: Expose deviation to House correction.

Immediate Reward: NONE.

Jace read the objective twice. "The System thinks helping that kid was a secret."

The panel bothered Jace more than the scan. Theodore's mercy had not vanished. It had been reduced to an exception small enough to hide inside procedure, useful only when he could rename kindness as asset preservation. Sunchain had not removed every human instinct. It had taught those instincts to survive by lying about what they were.

"The child was inside a recoverable territory," Theodore said. "Protecting her can be justified as asset preservation."

"That was fast."

"I have had practice."

The barrier above them trembled again. Jace's illegal branch continued pulling from the bridge.

Manual Bridge Remaining: 00:24:11.

Barrier Integrity: 41% -> 39%.

Charge: 14/140.

Health: 93/420.

Theodore studied the values. "You are converting yourself into maintenance."

"I declined tenants."

"I know."

"You sound disappointed."

"I am trying to determine whether I am impressed."

The sentence seemed to surprise him too. Caleb appeared in the lower doorway, gold reports already open over one hand. Elijah followed several steps behind. His eyes went first to Theodore's torn sleeves, then to the hidden lines at his wrists.

"Command remains delayed," Caleb said. "The vault anomaly has disrupted the registered route. We should restore the recovery field and secure the claimant before the territory fails."

"We should keep the barrier stable," Theodore replied.

"That is not our directive."

"It preserves the subject until recovery can proceed."

Caleb accepted the explanation instantly. Elijah did not. His fingers touched his own wrist, mirroring the place where Theodore's black-gold lines disappeared under skin.

"Was that how it started for you?" Elijah asked.

Caleb turned. "That question is irrelevant."

Theodore answered anyway. "No. It started with pain."

Jace sat back against the wall because standing had become theoretical. "What kind?"

"The kind that makes any answer sound reasonable if the person offering it promises the pain will stop."

Theodore crouched across from him. For once, he did not arrange his face into professional calm. What remained looked like the memory of where a wound had once been.

"My world was not Earth," he said. "My territory had eleven hours before structural deletion. I resisted recovery for nine. I broke three containment teams. I believed fear was proof I remained myself."

"And then?"

"My sister stopped recognizing me. The Corruption had begun using her memories through my voice." His eyes stayed on Jace. "Sunchain offered to remove the pain, stabilize the bloodline, and preserve what remained of the territory. I accepted before the tenth hour."

Seraphina folded her arms. "What did they preserve?"

"Fourteen thousand people."

"And you?"

Theodore considered the question with the same precision Caleb gave a calculation.

"Enough to persuade the next heir."

Elijah lowered his hand from his wrist.

Caleb did not move. "Recovery fulfilled its stated objective."

"Yes," Theodore said.

The agreement hurt more than an argument. Fourteen thousand survivors existed somewhere in the hierarchy, purchased with the parts of Theodore best able to regret the price. Jace looked at the scan again.

Independent Identity: 4%.

Remaining Identity Fragment: PRESENT.

"What is the fragment?" he asked.

Theodore's face closed slightly. Not completely.

"I do not know."

"Do you want to?"

The loyalty lock flashed.

INQUIRY RESTRICTED.

Recovered personnel may not pursue pre-recovery identity without medical authorization. Theodore waited for the notice to disappear. Then he looked at the people sheltering beneath Jace's failing shield.

"I used to," he said. "Wanting caused distress, so they corrected the distress."

RECOVERED ASSET PROFILE

Pain: NONE.

Corruption: NONE.

Fear: NONE.

Independent Self: MINIMAL.

Recovery Function: STABLE.

Theodore read his own profile without flinching.

"They left me enough to understand you," he said, "and removed enough that understanding would never stop me."
