The sentence did not leave much room for comfort. Jace watched Theodore stand beneath the failing barrier with torn sleeves and untouched arms. The Collector had saved a child because some surviving piece of him wanted to, then explained the act in language his loyalty lock could tolerate. The System opened a conversation menu between them.

Theodore's competence was part of the threat. He noticed Jace's worsening hand before Jace mentioned it, adjusted the room temperature when Corruption made his teeth chatter, and never once used cruelty where procedure would do. A monster would have been easier to hate.

RECOVERY NEGOTIATION

Available Responses:

1. Request revised treatment terms.

2. Accept voluntary recovery.

3. Contest House custody.

4. End discussion.

Jace looked past the options. "What was your name?"

INVALID RESPONSE.

Pre-recovery identity inquiry is outside authorized negotiation scope. Theodore's hands stilled on the panel.

LOYALTY LOCK: THEODORE VOSS

House Directive: Recover Jace.

Independent Refusal: DISABLED.

Unauthorized Identity Search: PROHIBITED.

Remaining Identity Fragment: 4%.

Correction Threshold: 12%.

"You asked me that downstairs," Theodore said.

"You said you did not know."

"I still do not."

"That was not the question."

The manual bridge pulled again before Theodore could answer.

TERRITORY SUPPORT DRAIN

Charge: 14/140 -> 11/140.

Health: 93/420 -> 90/420.

Barrier Integrity: 39% -> 37%.

Manual Bridge Remaining: 00:18:32.

The pressure struck Jace under the sternum. Emma was across the hall with both hands inside someone else's emergency and could not spare one to stop him. Seraphina braced his shoulder instead.

"You are paying for this conversation with your body," Theodore said.

"I was paying before you started talking."

"That does not make continuing wise."

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

"Neither does making former victims recruit replacements. Yet here we are."

Caleb stepped forward. "House Sunchain does not recruit victims. It stabilizes heirs whose unmanaged bloodlines threaten themselves and surrounding populations."

"Did anyone ask you what you were before Sunchain?"

"My prior classification has no operational relevance."

The answer came too quickly to be defensive. Caleb believed it. His loyalty was not a chain he felt pulling. It was the floor beneath him.

Elijah stood behind Theodore, fingers pressing his own wrist. "Mine matters to me."

Caleb looked at him. "That is residual distress."

"That is what you call everything that asks to remain."

Theodore turned slightly toward Elijah. The movement was small, but the loyalty panel reacted.

Remaining Identity Fragment: 4% -> 5%.

Correction Threshold: 12%.

"Do not push it," Theodore said.

Elijah's expression changed. "Are you warning me or protecting me?"

Theodore did not answer. The System offered Jace another set of choices.

CONVERSATION PATH UPDATED

A. Appeal to former identity. B. Threaten House consequences. C. Accept recovery logic. D. Exploit loyalty instability.

Projected Success:

A: 3%.

B: 1%.

C: 100%.

D: 18%.

Jace hated the menu because every option treated Theodore like a lock to pick. Even appeal had been reduced to leverage, another way of using the remaining person to defeat the role built around him. The System did not care whether Jace controlled Theodore through kindness or threat. It only cared that control produced a result.

"None," Jace said.

INPUT NOT RECOGNIZED.

"I'm not choosing how to use him."

Theodore looked at him more sharply than he had when Jace asked about his name.

CONVERSATION PATH: UNAUTHORIZED.

Objective changed: Speak without coercive outcome.

Hidden Mercy Objective: 1/1 independent act observed.

Reward Status: WITHHELD pending identity verification.

Caleb's report opened. "The claimant is interfering with a recovery officer's behavioral stability."

"He is talking to me," Theodore said.

"His questions are producing deviation."

"They are producing answers."

"That distinction is not recognized."

"No," Theodore said. "I am beginning to notice."

HOUSE SUNCHAIN INTERNAL ALIGNMENT

Caleb Marr: COMPLETE LOYALTY.

Elijah Arden: IDENTITY INSTABILITY.

Theodore Voss: CONDITIONAL DEVIATION.

Recovery Team Cohesion: STABLE -> FRACTURED.

Caleb read the panel and raised one hand. Gold lines gathered between his fingers, not an attack yet, but the administrative beginning of one.

"Theodore, step away from the claimant."

Theodore remained where he was.

"The order is valid," Caleb said.

"I know."

"Then comply."

The loyalty lock brightened beneath Theodore's skin. Black-gold lines climbed from his wrists toward his elbows. His face did not show pain because pain was gone, but his breathing changed, shallow and precise, as if the body still remembered what suffering required even when the mind had lost permission to name it.

LOYALTY CORRECTION ACTIVE

Deviation: 7%.

Motor Compliance: ENFORCED.

Identity Fragment Exposure: RISING.

Theodore's right foot moved backward. He stopped it after half an inch. For a second, Jace saw the shape of the original heir inside the delay. Not freedom, not rebellion, only a man spending what remained of himself to keep one foot where he had chosen to place it.

Elijah stared. "You can resist it."

"No," Theodore said. "I can delay it."

"How long?"

Theodore watched the correction lines reach his shoulders. "Long enough to answer one question poorly."

Jace did not ask for the name again. "Do you believe recovery saved you?"

"Yes."

"Do you believe it destroyed part of you?"

"Yes."

"Which answer does Sunchain allow?"

"The first."

The correction tightened. Theodore took one full step back, then another. Each movement looked voluntary until Jace noticed Theodore's hands clenched hard enough to cut crescents into palms that could no longer feel them. Caleb's report stabilized.

TEAM COHESION: FRACTURED.

House Response: INTERNAL REVIEW PENDING.

Theodore stopped beside him, exactly where the order had placed him. Seraphina's grip on Jace's shoulder tightened, not in victory. Nobody had won. Theodore had proved he could delay obedience by spending a piece of himself the System had already reduced to four percent. Jace looked at the menu still waiting between them.

"You know I am not accepting recovery."

"I know."

"You are still going to try."

"Yes."

"Because you think I am dangerous?"

"You are."

"Because you think I deserve what happened to you?"

Theodore's face changed before the lock could hide it.

"No," he said.

The correction lines dimmed, satisfied that the answer did not alter the directive. Jace waited. Theodore met his eyes across the hall.

"I do not hate you."
