Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 36: Predicted Movement

The first borrowed memory hit before Theodore finished pulling. Eighteen thousand pain responses arrived through the chain mark at once. Broken wrists. Failed legs. The sharp white panic of a body realizing it had stopped obeying before the mind had finished asking. None of them belonged to Jace, but Theodore's protocol knew how to make each one fit.

Jace made himself repeat the movement slowly after the first success. Prediction was useful only if it survived a second test. The System rewarded surprise too easily; he wanted a skill he could trust when surprise was gone.

CORRUPTION FEEDBACK LINK

Source: Combat Recovery Protocol.

Pain Library: 18,204 indexed heirs.

Target Response Delay: 0.7 seconds.

Movement Prediction: 96%.

Corruption Load: 92%.

Feedback Pressure: CRITICAL.

Jace's knees hit the marble. Theodore kept the black-gold chain taut. His face remained calm, but the hand holding the link trembled once.

"You remember all of them," Jace said.

"I remember where they broke."

"Same thing?"

"No." Theodore pulled harder. "That distinction is why I can still do this."

The chain found Jace's damaged arm and turned every old injury into a current one.

Health: 42/420 → 38/420.

Right-Arm Function: 21% → 8%.

Emma moved toward him. Caleb closed the recovery field across her path without looking away from Seraphina.

"Medical interference is prohibited," he said.

"That sentence is going to age badly," Jace managed.

Seraphina struck the restraint with both hands. White fractures spread through Caleb's gold lattice, but did not break it. Elijah stood behind Theodore, staring at the chain mark around Jace's wrist.

"Release him," Elijah said.

Caleb's head turned. "Maintain formation."

"I am."

"No. You are remembering."

The order landed visibly. Elijah's shoulders locked. His hand moved toward his wrist, stopped, and stayed there. Theodore pulled again. Jace saw a child learning to favor one leg after a recovery brace had tightened too far. A woman biting through her tongue to keep from giving diagnostic acceptance. Theodore himself, younger, carrying someone through a street collapsing under a sky Jace had never seen. The memory lasted less than a second.

It was enough.

"You did this move," Jace said. "Before them."

Theodore's chain tightened.

"You planted your good foot first. Protected the right side. Looked at the person behind you before you ran."

"Stop."

"They kept that memory because it helps you catch people doing the same thing."

"Stop."

The word came from Aren. The chain came from Theodore.

COMBAT RECOVERY PROTOCOL SCAN

Prediction Engine: Indexed Pain Memory.

Primary Processor: Theodore Voss.

Stabilization Field: Caleb Marr.

Identity Suppression: Elijah Arden.

Environmental Dependency: Sunchain Vault Network.

Breach Sight Proficiency: 32% → 36%.

There was the weakness.

The protocol was not running only through Theodore. Caleb's field reached down into the buried vault, borrowing its preservation network to calculate every way an unstable heir might fail. The vault was already failing. Jace reached through the Free Claim. Noah felt it immediately. The voluntary party line opened between them, carrying no command, only the question. Can I use the chamber connection? Noah's answer came through consent rather than words.

YES.

HEIR'S CLAIM: INDIRECT TARGET

Target: Chamber 001 Preservation Residue.

Ownership: NONE.

Consent: ACTIVE.

Available Function: Cost Redirection.

Warning: Vault instability may transfer through all connected recovery systems.

Jace selected the warning.

"Caleb," Theodore said. "Cut the vault route."

Caleb looked down at the field beneath his feet.

"If I cut it, prediction fails."

"Cut it."

"Recovery fails."

The gold lattice brightened instead. Caleb chose the protocol.

VAULT NETWORK LOAD

Integrity: 68%.

Combat Recovery Draw: 31%.

Unstable Chambers: 3.

Safe Operating Margin: 4%.

Jace pushed the Free Claim's maintenance pain into Chamber 001's old route. The vault recognized it as preservation cost, accepted it, then found Theodore's chain attached to the same system.

COST REDIRECTION: PARTIAL SUCCESS.

Claimant Body → Vault Network → Combat Recovery Link.

Heir's Claim Proficiency: 18% → 24%.

The chain went white-hot. Theodore staggered for the first time.

CHAIN-MARK DEBUFF REVERSED

Pain Response Link: BIDIRECTIONAL.

Corruption Feedback: SHARED.

Predicted Movement Accuracy: 96% → 61%.

Jace stood because Theodore's protocol had spent the last minute teaching him exactly which pain came next. Static Step opened.

PREDICTED MOVEMENT WARNING

Destination: Noah Venn.

Probability: 88%.

Jace looked at Noah. Then stepped toward Caleb.

Health: 38/420 → 35/420.

Static Step Proficiency: 17% → 21%.

Prediction Accuracy: 61% → 19%.

He emerged inside the edge of Caleb's field and drove Error Mark into the gold route beneath his raised hand.

ERROR MARK: PLACED

Target: Combat Recovery Stabilization.

Integrity: 100% → 54%.

Caleb did not defend himself. He turned both hands toward the collapsing protocol and held it together.

"Move," Jace said.

"Protocol integrity is my responsibility."

"It is killing you."

"That does not alter responsibility."

The vault surged. Caleb's Health dropped too fast for the numbers to remain readable.

Theodore released the chain. "Caleb, stand down."

Caleb's face stayed almost peaceful. "Recovery remains active."

The field consumed him in black-gold light.

CALEB MARR

Health: 0.

Status: DECEASED.

Combat Recovery Stabilization: FAILED.

Theodore's protocol collapsed. Elijah moved before the loyalty lock could correct him. He caught Theodore's arm, pulled him away from the burning route, and said the forbidden fragment directly into his face.

"Aren."

Theodore froze. Jace saw the man inside the Collector recognize the sound and lose the argument a heartbeat later. Elijah did not let go.

HOUSE SUNCHAIN ALIGNMENT

Elijah Arden: SUPPRESSED SELF ACTIVE.

Faction Status: DEVIATING.

Theodore Voss: IDENTITY INTERRUPTION.

Combat Recovery Protocol: OFFLINE.

Jace pulled the last of the reversed chain through the vault. Theodore hit the floor. Theodore's relief was immediate and terrible, the expression of a man whose body had finally been forced to stop doing what his mind could not refuse.

BOSS ENCOUNTER COMPLETE

Theodore Voss: DEFEATED.

Caleb Marr: DEAD.

Elijah Arden: FACTION STATUS UNRESOLVED.

Rewards: WITHHELD DURING STRUCTURAL EMERGENCY.

For one quiet second, nobody moved. Then the vault answered the overload.

VAULT INTEGRITY: 68% → 41%.

CONTAINMENT FAILURE CASCADE

New Unstable Chambers: 3 → 10.

Glass fractured beneath the floor, one sharp report after another.

Seven chambers cracked at once.
